Mytrēya:

“Oh! Greatsage! Parāśara! having got Cupid’s like (manmatha) captivating beauty and his desire fulfilled, what did Gāla do on way to his home?”

Parāśara:

“Oh! Mytrēya! “I will tell you  Gāla’s story in order, which made even celestial beings rejoice.

While going his way Gāla saw Dhwajadatta. Immediately he changed direction and started running away from Dhwajadatta, fearing that hem may say bad words about his Guru again.

Seeing such good looking person that shone like the Sun, the Brāhmin Dhwajadatta suddenly got up started going across his (Gāla’s) path,

Running fast with heavy breathing Dhwajadatta reached Gāla in a while.

So reaching him Dhwajadatta said, ‘Oh! Dear friend for life! Where are you going leaving me behind?

I was waiting here for you to come back. Leaving the right path why are you running in the wrong path and avoiding me?

How did you attain this beautiful form that is better than that of the Cupid’s? What is the reason that made you get rid of your earlier ugly appearance?

Oh! Merciful man! Please tell me the whole above thing.’ So requested Gāla narrated e very thing that happened in an orderly way.

Gāla’s Devotion to Guru:

That very revered and worshipped great yogi Puşkara himself removed my horrible state thanks to the wash water off his feet (pādōdakam).

It is his benevolence that is the cause of my grand wellbeing. That is why, Oh! The best of Brahmins! I obtained this beautiful form.

While I was coming now, my expertise in hunting, noticed a deer that made me change the path.’ So saying Gāla reached his own home in no time.

Reaching home Gāla enjoyed for a long time all liked desires with his dear wife, children and friends, ultimately attaining the heavenly abode thanks to the effect of the Hanumadmantra.

Dhwajadatta grieved a lot because he did not achieve the objective, while Gāla the hunter did so nicely.

Then he came to Puşkara full of confusion, bowed to him and said so.

Dhwajadatta’s Grievence:

‘Oh! Great persona! Why did I, best of the Brahmins, knowing Veda and all its parts, well-versed in all the sciences along with meaning and details, having control over senses, maintaining rules and regulations of spiritual life, not achieve the objective?

Why did not it fructify even after repeated systemic recitation cycles? Oh! Great sage! I recited that the great mantra with devotion to methodology.

Without food, without sleep, bathing in holy water bodies, on sandy duenes in rainy season, in the middle of water during winter season,

In blasting stone boulders during summer, I recited the mantra but never attaining the result. Oh! Great persona! What caused the delay in obtaining the achievement?

Gāla the kirāta belongs to a lower social stratum. He has bad habbits, almost like an animal with two legs, hunts cruelly, eats meat and always yields to sensual urges of the body.

Also, he greatly likes drinking wine and joins such individuals that should never be joined with. He is abode of all the bad deeds and sins that are there.

How such a person is entitled to learn the mantra. How can he know the methodology of the mantra? How could you teach the mantra to a kirāta doing such sins?

Like a dog not being entitled to partake the offering to a ritual, how this Gāla is entitled to learn the mantra? Like a dog not being allowed in to a fire recital premises, he does not deserve even coming to this place. Even so, Oh! Great sage! Why the mantra did not give me results to me even after reciting systematically?’

Puşkara’s Analysis of Dhwajadatta:

Wondering what went wrong with Dhwajadatta standing before him, Puşkara gradually made him stop belittling Gāla by telling soothing words.

Desirous of seeing the reason for the delay in fulfillment of Hanumanmahāmantra results right away, he meditated for a while on Lord Hanumān.

Thus he saw everything in the past, present and future.

That great yogi Puşkara analysed the fact of Dhwajadatta’s life and to decide about the cause of delay for the mantra to give the result.

Having decided that Puşkara said so to Dhwajadatta, ‘Oh! Brāhmin! You do not have faith in the Guru. This lead to delay in achieving the result of the mantra, even though you recited it as stipulated.

In case of a mantra, a holy water body, a Brāhmin, God, an astrologer, a physician, a Guru; one gets result in proportion to one’s attitude.

Oh! Good Brāhmin! You have faith in the mantra and in the God. But you have no faith in and devotion towards the Guru that taught you the mantra.

The Guru from whom one learns about the nature of God, such mantra giver has to be revered more than God even.

Gāla’s Faith & Devotion to Guru:

Though Gāla is a bad person, he attained desired result of the mantra because he has immense faith in the Guru and is enjoying life because of that.

Guru is the ultimate God. There is nothing above the Guru. A man can attain satisfaction only by respecting Guru like God.

Vedic scholars say that the very letter uttered by a Guru, whether it is meaningful or not is the one that gives meaning to life.

I prayed to Lord Hanumān for your sake. Merciful on me, He kindly revealed the truth.

Oh! Dhwajadatta! You are really well versed in all sciences and scriptures, but because of lack of faith in the Guru you are not getting the result of the mantra.

Repeating cycles of recitation systematically is a waste with faith in the Guru. Lord Hanumān told that Guru is the ultimate God since he bestows the divine mantra.

Hence, Oh! Brāhmin! Recite this great mantra only with with a cool mind and good faith, Then the mantra will give results. There is no scope for doubt in this.’

Hearing this way from Guru Puşkara the whole issue with realization of faith, Dhwajadatta said so to the divine Guru.

‘Oh! Godly Guru! I am a sinner and did many sinful acts. I am born in sin. I am lying in the sea of non-belief. So please redeem me.

Oh! Great Persona! Please tell me method of avoiding (parihāra) the blemish (dōşa) of not believing in the Guru. The one who does not perform redemption acts (prayascitta) has no right to perform rituals, surely.

The rituals will not give result if performed by one not entitled. A fire sacrifice performed by a lowly man will not give results.

Hence kindly tell me the appropriate redemption acts needed to get rid of the sin. Please do not hesitate however difficult it may be to perform.’

Then Puşkara sprinkled wash water off the feet of Lord Hanumān on the determined, unfortunate Dhwajadatta who did not attain any useful thing.

On sprinkling like that, he got cleaned of the mud of not having faith in the Guru and took a bath in the wash water off the feet of the divine Guru.

Declaring loudly that this is the atonement for the sins that he accumulated over his life cycles, that Brāhmin,

Putting a vertical mark with the soil off the feet of the Guru’s feet, said, ‘From now onwards I am eligible for performing all the rituals’.

Sri Parasara Samhita - Part 1 - Chapter 12 - Pic 01

Dhwajadatta Repents:

Then Dhwajadatta bowed and folded hands to the Guru, took his permission to recite the mantra and went to the Punyatīrtha water body for attaining desired goals of action.

There he performed ritualistic sipping of water, meditated on the lotus feet of the Gurru and with a balanced feeling both fot the divine and his Guru, recited 108 times the 12-lettered Hanmaddwādasākşara mantra.

Since Dhwajadatta recited the mantra with proper preparations and attitude, he attained the goal rather easily.

Wishing to dhow mercy on the steadily meditating Dhwajadatta, the disciple of the great Puşkara, Suvarcchala’s husband, Lord Hanumān said so to the great devotee Añgada (prince) and the others.

‘Make arrangements for me to visit the disciple of the great Puşkara and the wise Dhwajadatta.

He is performing great ritual at the Punyatīrtha, but has not yet achieved liberation. I have to go there.

All were happy to hear the Lord’s command. They immediately arranged the Mēru mountain like camel (Hanumān‘s vehicle) set up with a throne studded with nine types of diamonds (navaratnakhscita).

On bringing up that mighty and fast camel, Hanumān mounted it with the help of aide Neela.

Like a lion sitting on a mountain, like Indra seated on his mighty and white elephant Airāvata, like Visnu seated I the great eagle Garuda and like Paramēśwara seated on the best of bulls, Nandi,

The Son of Wind God, Hanumān went a his invocation written by Citrāvasu (a celestial leader) being sung, with Añgada leading the front and with His left side radiant due to mother Suvarcchala seated there.

Hanumān went along his family and friends, in a hurry to give boon to the Guru-devoted, mantra reciting, Brahmin Dhwajadatta.

By the sounds (grunts and footfalls) of the young camel (Hanumān’s vehicle) and by the ‘Jaya, Jaya’ (victory, victory) shouts of the accompanying heralders, Dhwajadatta realized that his Lord Hanumān is coming.

Thus ends the 12th Chapter, entitled The Story Devotion to the Guru” (Śrī Suvarcchalā Hanumat Dwādaśākşarī Manatmahātmyamm) (Greatness of Śrīsuvarcchalāhanumaddwādaśākşarī Mantara) of Śrī Parāśara Samhitā
