43rd Chapter (Trichayvārimśat Paţalah)

“Narration about the Devotees of Hanumān”

(ŚrīHanumadbhakta Kathanam)

श्रीपराशरः
इदं श्रुत्वा ब्राह्मणानां वाक्यं यवननन्दनः
अमर्षयुक्तो दुष्टात्मा प्रत्युवाच सतां प्रति।। 1

Parāśrā:

“Hearing such words spoken by the Brahmins, Kālayama’s son, evil minded Durmukha said so the good scholars. (1)

हनुमान्नाम को विप्रा यस्तु मूढ़ैः प्रगद्यते
अहं तु राजा सर्वेषां लोकानामपि चेश्वरः।। 2

‘Oh! Foolish Brahmins! Who is that Hanumān, being so praised by you? I am the king of all and lord of all worlds. (2)

मदन्यभजनास्सर्वे हतभाग्या हतौजसः
अन्नपानविहीनाष्च गमिष्यथ यथायथम्।। 3

All those who worship others, apart from me, are dumb-headed and powerless. They will be deprived of food and water. (3)

युष्मन्नवध्यताबुद्ध्या न हन्याम्यहमीदशान्
यदि नागच्छथाद्यैव ब्राह्मणानपि पीडये।। 4

Because of your evil-minded and intrlligence, I am not killing ones like you. If you don’t leave even now, I will destroy you, the Brahmins.’ (4)

एवं श्रुत्वा मुने! विप्रा वचनं यवनोदितम्
श्वो गच्छामो वयं सर्वे इत्युक्त्वा विविषुः पुरम्।। 5

Oh! Mytrēya! Hearing such words said by Durmukha all of them said that they will go away the next day and returned to their village as usual. (5)

प्रविश्य च तदा देवं हनूमन्तं महाबलम्
तुष्टुवुः केचिदपरे पूजां चक्रुस्समाहिताः।। 6

So entering the village right away they started reciting praising hymns of Hanumān, the most powerful lord od lords, Some gathered at a place and started Hanumān worship. (6)

केचिद्दध्युः कृतात्मानो-जेपुस्तन्मन्त्रकोविदाः 7

While some were meditating on Hanumān, some masters in Vēda mantras with alerted inner sense (avahitacitta) recited mantras. (7)

विप्राणां ध्यायतामेवं-दण्डवन्नमतां भुवि
हनूमदालये भूयः जपतां मंत्रमुत्तमम् || 8

Thus along with meditation and mantra recital, bowing and prostrate-salutations, controlled breathing (prāņāyāma) were carried out. Recitation of the best Hanumān mantras is being carried out in the temples. (8)

अपूपा मधुराः स्वाद्याः-फलानि विविधानि च
निवेदितानि देवाय-संभ्रमाद्विजपुङ्गव।। 9

Sweet, fried, rice cakes (apoopā) different varieties of tasty fruits were offered to Lord Hanumān by those Brahmins. (9)

हनुमान् कस्यचित्स्वप्ने जगाद ष्लोकयोर्युगम्।। 10

Hanumān appeared divinely in the dreams of one person and told two hymns (ślōkāh). (10)

मान्धाता च महीपतिः कष्तयुगालङ्कारभूतो गतः
सेतुर्येन महोदधौ विरचितः क्वासौ दशास्यान्तकः
अन्ये चापि युधिष्ठिरप्रभष्तयः ते कीर्तिशेषंगताः
नैकेनापि समं गता वसुमती नूनं त्वया यास्यति।। 11

‘Emperor Māndhātā (Rāmā’s ancestor), the very hero of the First Time Cycle (Kŗtayuga) left. Where is Rāma that builder of a bridge across the ocean and killed Rāvaņa (Daśāsyah)? The remaining great souls like Yudhisţira (eldest Pandava prince) have also gone (keertiśēşamgatāh); This Earth is not left with any of them. This land is always with you (Brāhmins). (11)

आत्मदत्तापहारी यः श्मश्रोर्नीचतरो हि सः
अन्यैस्तु छर्दितं भुङ्क्ते न स्वात्मच्छर्दितं क्वचित्।। 12

One who takes back what he himself has gifted is meaner than a hair fiber. Someone or thing can consume the food vomited by others. But no one consumes his own vomit. (12)

श्लोकद्वयं भवन्तो द्य यवनं श्रावयन्तु तम्
श्रुत्वा स गच्छेन्नोचेत्तु प्रतिकृष्त्यं करोम्यहम्।। 13

Make the son of Kālayavana hear these two poems. On hearing, he himself will go away. If he does not go himself on hearing this, I will do the needful. (13)

इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे वीरो हनुमान्भक्तवत्सलः
तत उत्थाय विप्रेन्द्रो ब्राह्मणेभ्यो यथातथम्।। 14

So saying, benefactor of devotees, Hanumān, divinely disappeared in thin air. That good Brāhmin woke up from sleep and to the other Brāhmins just what happened – (14)

वर्णयामास वष्त्तांतं श्रुत्वा ते हृष्टमानसाः
गत्वा परेद्युस्ते विप्रास्तस्मै शोकयुगं तथा।। 15

He narrated what all he saw in his dream to the other Brāhmins. They were rejoiced to hear that. All of them went next day and those two poems (15)

श्रावयामासुरह्राय यवनाय दुरात्मने
श्रुत्वैव राक्षसेन्द्रोपि कोपविस्फुरिताधरः।। 16

Were told to the evill-souled son of Kālayavana. With his lips quivering with anger, that demon (16)

हुंकृष्त्य विप्रान्गच्छध्वं शीघ्रेणैवेत्यवोचयत्
श्रुत्वा संभत्र्सनं वाक्यं शस्तु गच्छामहे वयम्
एवं समाधीय खलं विविशुः पुरमुत्तमम्।। 17

Loudly growled at them and asked them to leave fast. Hearing his angry words the residents said, “Sir! We will leave tomorrow” and re-entered that best village. (17)

तत्र सम्भूय विप्रेन्द्र उपायं तन्निवर्तकम्
चिन्तयन्तो नतग्रीवाः जानुस्थितमुखाम्बुजाः।। 18

Oh! Best of Brāhmins! Mytrēya! All of them started discussing on how to stop that demon, sitting with necks craned and their faces on their knees, (18)

कस्त्राता नो द्य सर्वेषां दुस्तरादापदांबुधेः
अन्योन्यमिति जल्पंतः प्रत्येकं दुःखविह्नलाः।। 19

‘Who will save us from this scion of danger?’ So asking each other, depressed due to sadness, (19)

अमुंचताश्रुवर्षाणि धारा इव घनाघनाः
रुदतो ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठान् दष्ष्ट्वा सर्वे पुरोभवाः।। 20

Their eyes are raining tears of melancholy. Seeing the Brāhmins crying so, all those in the front, (20)

स्त्रियो वृध्दाश्च बालाश्च रुरुदुर्मुक्तकंठकं
गृष्हपालास्ततो भूयः द्वारपालाः परस्परम्।। 21

Women, elderly ones and children started crying at once. Watchmen at the houses, door guards,  (21)

गोपालोद्यानपालाश्च विकीर्णहृदयाश्शुचि
तत्र केचिन्महात्मानः धैर्यमास्थाय यत्नतः।। 22

Cow keepers, gardeners fainted. Then, some great souls, gaining courage with effort, (22)

वारयांचक्रिरे दुःखात् दुःखितं पौरमण्डलम्
हनुमानेव नस्त्राता स्मष्तस्सर्वाघनाशनः।। 23

Consoled those that were crying. ‘Hanumān, who responds just by remembering Him, will be our protector.’ (23)

इत्येवं भाषमाणास्ते ममृष्जुर्दुःखकर्दमम्
स्वयं तदा समाधाय मानसं दुःखचव्म्चलम्
जेपुस्सर्वे तदा वीरहनुमन्मंत्रमुत्तमम्।। 24

Impact of Veerahanumanmantra

So saying, they washed away the mud of melancholy. All the Brahmins, controlling their sorrow, recited the Veerahanumanmantra. (24)

जिताहारा जितक्रोधा जितशीतोष्णवायवः
ध्यायंतो हृदयाब्जे स्वे हनुमत्पदपंकजम्।। 25

Feeling no hunger, winning over their anger, even unmindful of the blowing hot and cold winds, they all meditated with Hanumān’s lotus feet in their hearts. (25)

व्रते शरावोदयनामसंयुगे
दत्वा बहुभ्यो द्विजनन्दनेभ्यः
अपूपसारान् सघष्तान् सपायसान्
संतर्पयामासुरथांजनासुतम्।। 26

Taking up the Ritual of Happiness to all (śraavōdayavrata), they satisfied Hanumān, by offering rice cakes fried in ghee and milk-rice pudding (pāyasa) many Brāhmins. (26)

शरावोदयनिष्णाताः वाग्यत्ननियतव्रताः
चक्रुस्समाप्तिं ते तत्र हनूमद्व्रतमुत्तमम्।। 27

With śraavōdayavrata spirit full in their deeds and thoughts, they completed the sacred Hanumadvrata (specific Hanumān worship). (27)

इति भक्तापदं वीक्ष्य हनुमान् करुणानिधिः
उवाच मधुरां वाणीं अदृश्यनिजविग्रहः।। 28

Seeing the great danger that his devotees are in, Hanumān, without showing His own form, said so in sweet words. (28)

भो भो विप्रा महाभागाः न बिभ्यत कदाचन
मयि त्रातरि भक्तानां नाशुभं विद्यते क्वचित्।। 29

‘Oh! Great souls! Brahmins! Never get frightened. Nothing untoward happens when I am protecting my devotees. (29)

वसुधां सर्वसस्याढ्यां ब्राह्मणेभ्यो वितीर्य यः।
गृष्ह्नाति चेत्पुनर्लाेभात् स याति नरकान्बहून्।। 30

If anyone, out of miserliness, takes back the highly productive lands of Brahmins that he himself gifted, that one will suffer hells of different types. (30)

उपेक्षेत च यो दाता शक्तो पि परिपालने
सोपि मूढ़मतिर्विवप्रा रौरवं नरकं व्रजेत्।। 31

Oh! Brahmins! If such donor is capable of protecting such a land and its beneficiaries keeps inactive, such a fool will go to Raurava (most horrible) and other hells. (31)

गवां द्विजन्मनां सद्यः महत्सङ्कटगामिनाम्
उत्थापने समर्थो पि सो पि दुर्गतिमाप्नुयात्।। 32

One who does not, even if capable, neglects protection of cows and Brahmins in danger, will face a bleak future. (32)

सर्वेषामेव जन्तूनां प्राणः प्रियतरो भृशम्
मम भक्तजनाः प्राज्ञाः प्राणप्रियतरा मम 
इत्युक्त्वा कपिनाथो पि विरराम जगाम च।। 33

Life is the most dearest one to all living creatures. Oh! Brahmins! But for me, my devotees are the dearest ones. So telling, Hanumān divinely disappeared. (33)

ततो विप्राः समुत्थाय हनुमत्पुरवासिनः
विस्मयं परमं जग्मुः अशरीरवच श्श्रवात् ।। 34

Then the Brahmin residents of Hanumatpura were greatly surprised at the words they listened from the unseen form. (34)

तदा हृष्टा द्विजश्रेष्ठाः हनुमन्मन्त्रतत्पराः
परस्परं प्रशंसंतः हनुमद्वैभवं परम्।। 35

Then those Brāhimins, adept and devoted to the Hanumanmantra, felt happy and started discussing the powers of Hanumān amongst themselves. (35)

सर्वे ते ह्मात्मसुप्रज्ञाः यवनाक्रान्तवृष्त्तिषु
आव्म्जनेयकृपापूर्णसेचनं मेनिरे द्विजाः।। 36

Then, all the Brāhmins that were rich in knowledge about self (ātmagńyāna) saw Hanumān’s kindness in the face of the danger from the son of Kālayavana. (36)

हनुमानपि तं देशं आगमत्त्वरयान्वितः
यत्रास्ते यवनो मूढ़ः सेनाकलकलान्वितः।। 37

Hanumān terrifies Demon Army

Hanumān too came to the place where the noise by the soldiers of the foolish son of Yavana are heard. (37)

महावानररूपेण दुर्मुखस्य चमूं तथा
प्रदक्षिणीचकारासौ निखिलां वलयात्मना।। 38

Hanumān in the form of giant monkey went around the forces of Durmukha once. (38)

एवं प्रक्राम्य पूर्वेण गतस्तेषां प्रपश्यतां
तं दष्ष्ट्वा गूढ़चारस्तु यवनाय न्यवेदयत्।। 39

Having encircled them so, He went in the eastern direction as they were seeing Him. Seeing their encirclement by the giant monkey, the spies went and informed the son of Yavana. (39)

भो राजन् कस्य नामेदं तनुर्वानररूपधष्त्
रक्ताक्षः पर्वताकारसङ्काशो पि विभीषणः।। 40

‘Oh! King! The One carrying the name of the village, One having a monkey form, One with red eyes, One as big a a mountain, very frightening one, (40)

दीर्घवालो महाबाहुः सेनां प्रक्रम्य तावकीम्
सेनानिवेशतुल्येन पाषाणेन दष्ढात्मना
छादयन्निव वेगेन भीतिमेतां प्रभूत्तम।। 41

One with a long tail, One with long arms, encircled your entire forces; (we) fear that He may cover your entire force with a stone equal to the area occupied the forces. (41)

विलोक्याभिमुखं पूर्वां प्रतस्थे चलसन्निभः
इमां सेनां नयापन्नो हविष्यति बलोद्धतः
तावदेव त्वया चास्या रक्षोपायो विचिन्त्यताम्।। 42

After seeing your soldiers that mountain-sized One went eastwards. Oh! Durmukha! Think of a way to save your forces before that mighty one destroys them. (42)

ग्रामो यं विप्रमुख्येभ्यो दत्तो हनुमता प्रभो!
अस्य सोढुं न वै भङ्गं शक्तो यं बलिनां बली।। 43

Oh! Lord! This village was gifted by Hanumān to the best of Brāhmins. He will not bear destruction of this village. He is mighty of the mightiest. (43)

विक्रांतो विजयी मानी संग्रामेष्वपराजितः
कालनेमिर्हतो येन रावणिश्चाक्षनामकः।। 44

Hanumān the valiant, victorious, who knows no defeat in wars; also, demons Kālanēmi and Akşaya, the son of Rāvaņa died at his hands. (44)

बहुशः राक्षसास्संख्ये हतास्तेन महात्मना
तस्मात्त्वं रक्ष सेनां नः भीतान्तर्गतचेष्टया।। 45

Countless number of demons lost their lives at the hands of that great soul Hanumān. Hence, with that fear in the heart, think of an appropriate way of protecting your demon forces. (45)

रात्रौ जीवेम सर्वे द्य वयं जीवेम शाश्वतम्
इति चारवचश्श्रुत्वा यवनो भयविह्नलः।। 46

Only if we all can survive this night, we can live forever.’ Hearing the words of his spies that son of Yavana got frightened (and) (46)

तस्माद्देशादपक्रान्तो जान्नपि चमूं कपिः
निजभक्तिप्रभावस्य प्रकाशनकष्ते कृती।। 47

Left that place. Though Hanumān knew what happened and though capable of expressing His devotion to His devotees, (47)

तस्यां रात्रौ हनुमांस्तु शैलमुत्पाट्य वेगतः
पूर्वं यत्रोषिता सेना स्वयं च वलयीकष्ता
यावत्सेनासन्निवेशं पातायामास पर्वतम्।। 48

Hanumān pulled off a mountain from the ground and dropped exactly at the place where he saw and encircled the demon forces’ base that night itself. (48)

दृष्टवा प्रभाते सा सेना स च राक्षसनन्दनः
विस्मयाविष्टमनसो भयभारावपीडिताः।। 49

Son of the demon (Durmukha) and others saw that mountain in the morning, greatly surprised and worried by fear, (49)

जीवितास्स्म वयं दैवादित्यूचुस्ते परस्परम्
अथवा तद्वदत्रापि पाषाणं विपुलायतम्
पातयिष्यति कोपेन किमु भक्तवशंवदः।। 50

They discussed amongst themselves; ‘By God’s grace, we are alive. If not, would we all have perished if we remained at the same place due to Hanumān dropping of such a mountain on us, out of his benevolence towards his devotees?’ (50)

इति त्रस्तान्समालोक्य सैनिकान् पवनात्मजः
माभैषीति समाश्वास्य सांत्वयामास सामवित्।। 51

Durmujha gets Sense

Aware of the path of calm propriety also, son of Yavana told his frightened soldiers not to fear. (51)

ततो विप्रान् समाहूय स राजा यवनाधिपः
अग्रण्यमग्रतःकृष्त्वा वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्।। 52

Then that demon king Durmukha invited all the Brāhmins, first respectfully bowing to them, said so. (52)

शृष्णुध्वमनयं विप्रा दर्पादुद्धतमद्य मे
यादृशात्पुरुषो मृष्त्युः जातकल्पो महानभूत्।। 53

‘Oh! Brāhmins! Please listen. I and my forces, remaining helpless facing death brought by my own arrogance, your kind visit only took us out of the ocean of danger. (53)

मदीयसेनया नूनमनन्यशरणाशया
भवत्संदर्शनादेव सन्तीर्णो ह्यापदबुंधेः।। 54

Oh! Best amongst Brāhmins residing in Hanumatpura! From today onwards, without fear, stay here as you wish happily. (54)

अद्यप्रभृष्ति विप्रेन्द्रा हनुमत्पुरवासिनः
यथासुखं यथावृष्त्ति वसन्तु त्यक्तसाध्वसाः।। 55

Hanumān is the protector and giver for all. Now go on performing śarāvōdaya and other Hanumān rituals with renewed faith. (55)

हनूमानेव सर्वेषां त्राता दाता च बुद्धितः
अत्र पूर्वाधिकं यूयमाव्म्जनेयपरायणाः
शरावोदयमुख्यानि कुरुध्वं तद्व्रतानि वै।। 56

Keep on performing every year, every month and every day, again and again, all the Hanumān festivals, worships and rituals.’ (56)

तदुत्सवं च तत्पूजां तत्समाराधनं मुहुः
प्रतिमासं प्रतिदिनं कुरुध्वं प्रतिवत्सरम्।। 57

So telling, that king, son of Yavana, kept those good Brāhmin people as custodians and presented them many valuable  precious stones, (57)

नियुज्यैवं द्विजश्रेष्ठा न्राजा यवननंदनः
ददौ तेभ्यो महार्हाणि रत्नानि विविधानि च।। 58

Villages, human settlements, countries, clothes, ornaments, wealth and grains, different types of cows, cows with grown female calves, (58)

ग्रामान्जनपदान् देशान् वस्त्राण्याभरणनि च
धनधान्यान्यनेकानि गाश्च वष्कयणैरपि।। 59

Thousands of elephants, horses, chariots, camels, males and such many others to those Brahmins. (59)

गजानश्वन् रथानुष्ट्रान् वाधेष्चापि सहस्त्रशः
एतानन्यान्महाभागः ब्राह्मणेभ्यो न्यवेदयत्।। 60

Thus satisfying those Brāhmins the best of Hanumān devotees, sought their apologies for his mistakes. (60)

इति विप्रान् समाधाय हनुमद्भक्तपुङ्गवान्
क्षन्तव्यान्यपराधानीत्यभ्युवाद यथागत्।। 61

The Brāhmins, now having no anger against him, was hugged, that demon king, folding his hands, prayed them for his wish (as follows). (61)

परिष्वक्तो दृढ्ं प्रेम्णा विप्रैर्विवगतमत्सरैः
संप्रार्थयन्नृपो भीष्टानित्यवोचत्कष्तांजलिः 62

‘On me, who, out of lack of knowledge and power of differentiating good from bad (vivēka) insulted you, allow the dust off the lotus feet of the great monkey lord Hanumān fall, show me the right path, cause me bliss and  bless me with longevity and healthy life. Bestow similar kindness on my near and dear.’ (62)

अज्ञातभूतपरिभूतविवेकशून्ये
दत्वा कपीन्द्रपदपद्मपरागभूतिं
अध्वानमध्वरकष्तस्सुखमात्मगेहा
दाशाध्वमायुरगदं परमात्मवर्गे।। 63

So prayed by that Durmukha, the Brāhmins, because they are always merciful towards the unfortunate one, on mutual consent, said ‘tathaştu’ (so be it). (63)

इति संप्रार्थिता विप्राः भूभृता दीनवत्सलाः
अन्योन्यसम्मतास्सर्वे तथास्त्वित्यब्रुवन् मुदा।। 64

Thus, son of Yavana, Durmukha left bowing in reverence and saluting Hanumān, the great soul, with folded handsand silently meditating that Lord. (64)

हनूमन्तं महात्मानं प्रणम्य शिरसा तथा
तमेव मनसा ध्यायन् ययौ यवननन्दनः।। 65

Hanumān, always active in protecting devotees, has such a great impact. Oh! Mytrēta! One must always meditate on the One that fulfills desires. (65)

एवंप्रभावो हनुमान् भक्तरक्षणतत्परः
तस्मिन्भक्तिर्विधातव्या मैत्रेयाभीष्टकामदे।। 66

Thus, those that are not capable of warring, living there happily in that village, by the grace of Hanumān, practicing all the stipulations, dwelled in very sacred houses. (66)

ग्रामे संग्रामदुष्प्रापे प्रसादाद्धनुमत्कपेः
कृष्तावासा धृताभ्यासाः परिपूतगृष्हान्तराः।। 67

Even now,Brāhmins there, intently following the routine acts, full with wealth and grains, having sons-grandsons, (67)

अद्यापि ब्राह्मणास्तत्र नित्यकर्मपरायणाः
धनधान्यसमायुक्ताः पुत्रपौत्रगणाविन्ताः।। 68

With total bliss emanating out of their Hanumān devotion, like the devine beings in the heaven, enjoyed happy life on this Earth itself. (68)

हनुमद्भक्तिसव्म्जातपूर्णानन्दाभिनिभ्रृताः
मोदन्ते बहुलं स्वर्गे यथा देवास्तथा भुवि
राजापि विप्रवचनात्परिपूर्णकामः
सुप्तप्रबुद्ध इव विस्मयसस्मितास्यः
ज्ञानोदयेन चरणे खिलभूतसंघे
विप्रेषु दैवतमतिं मनसा चकार।। 69

King Durmuka, thanks to the blessings of the Brāhmins, got all his wishes fulfilled, having a smile on his face as though just woke from sleep, because of acquiring true knowledge, lived with godly feeling towards all living creatures. (69)

 

इतिश्रीपराशरसंहितायां श्रीपराशरमैत्रेयसंवादे श्रीहनुमद्भक्त कथनंनाम त्रिचत्वारिंशत्पटलः

Thus ends the 43rd Chapter “Narration about the Devotees of Hanumān”
