54th Chapter (Catuhpancāśat Paţalah)

“Narration of the Impact of the Bhavişyadbrahama Concept

(Bhavişyadbrahama Prabhāva Kathanam)

श्रीपराशरः
अथावलोकयांचक्रे सनकादीन् सभासदः
इतिकर्तव्यताबुद्धिविहीनो विश्वसृट्र तथा।। 1

Śrī Paraāśara:

The Solution

Unable to do anything seeing the fierce form of Hanumān, Brahma looked at Sanakaand other saints present in the council. (1)

बुद्धयो विदुषां चापि विपद्यन्ते विपत्तिषु।। 2

Even the intellects of the scholars does not perform during dangerous situations. (2)

सनत्कुमारः प्रोवाच ब्रह्माणं विगतव्यथः
धैर्यमास्थाय तेजस्वी तपोबलसमन्वितः
भगवन्भारतीनाथ दीयतां राममुद्रिका।। 3

Radiant and full with the power of performing austerities, Sanatkumāra, getting rid of his fear, gathering courage said so to Brahma, ‘Oh! Lord! Spouse of Goddess Saraswati! Handover the royal ring to Hanumān. (3)

दानेनैव प्रतीकार्यो न साम्ना केवलेन वै।। 4

Because gift in the ring is the only solution and not trying to talk out peacefully. Giving away in gift is the solution.’ (4)

सनत्कुमारवचनं श्रुत्वा ब्रह्मसभासदः
अन्वमोदन्त संवादं जगतां हितकाम्यया।। 5

Hearing the words of Sanatkumāra, everyone in the Brahma’s council agreed that, for the sake of the goodness of the world that is the only good action. (5)

एवं निवेदितं पथ्यं सूनुना भावितात्मना
ईदृशो व्यसने प्राप्ते हितमेवेत्यमन्यत।। 6

Hearing the appropriate course of action suggested by his own thought-created son (Sanatkumāra), Brahma decided that to be the right action in this difficult situation. (6)

अथ तुष्टाव विधिवद्विधिः प्रीतिपुरस्सरम्।। 7

A satisfied Brahma, then recited the invocation (stōtram) for Hanumān in this manner. (7)

उष्ट्रारूढ़ सुवर्चलासहचरन् सुग्रीवमित्राव्म्जना
सूनो वायुकुमार केसरितनूजा क्षादिदैत्यांतक
सीताशोकहराग्निनन्दन सुमित्रासम्भवप्राणद
श्रीभीमाग्रजश्ंभुपुत्र हनुमन् पव्म्चास्य तुभ्यं नमः 8

Invocation to Hanumān

‘Oh! Rider of the Camel! Husband of Suvarcchala! Friend of Sugreeva! Son of mother Ańjana! One born via the boon of Wind God Vāyu! Son of Kēsari! Killer of the Akşa and other demons! Remover of the grief of mother Sītā! Carried by Agni! Saver of Lakşmaņa’s life! Elder brother of Bheema! Born out of the Brilliance (amśa) of Śiva! One with Five Faces! Hanumān! I bow to thee in reverence. (8)

खड्गं खेटकभिंडिपालपरशुं पाशत्रिशूलदु्रमान्
चक्रं, शंखगदाफलांकुशसुधाकंुभान् हलं, पर्वतम्,
टंकं पर्वतकार्मुकाहिडमरूनेतानि दिव्यायुधा
न्येवं विंशतिबाहुभिष्च दधतं ध्याये हनूमत्प्रभुम्।। 9

I meditate upon Hanumān, who holds in his twenty hands– a sword, a protective disc (khēţaka), an iron thorned weapon (khindivāla), an axe (parasu), a rope (pāśa). a trident (triśūla), a tree (druma), a hand wheel (cakra), a conch (śankha), a mace (gadā), a fruit (phala), an elephant god (ānkuśa), a nector pot (amŗtabhānda), a plough (hala), a mountain (parvata), a chisel like weapon (ţankam), a hill, a bow (kārmukam), a snake (sarpam), a small hour-glass shapped drum (damaruka).’ (9)

इत्येवमव्म्जनापुत्रं प्रसन्नीकृत्य विश्वसृट्र
तस्य प्रदर्शयांचक्रे सरसीं मुद्रिकाश्रयाम्।। 10

Thus mellowing Hanumān, the son of Ańjana and making him pleasantly disposed, Brahma showed him the lake containing the rings. (10)

अनन्तरामावतारेषु मुद्रिकाः
चतुर्मुखप्रार्थनया समर्पिताः
कृतास्पदा यत्र सुधारसास्पदे
निदर्शयामास सरस्तदात्मना।। 11

The Tale of Signet Rings

All the Rāma rings given by Lord Rāma in His unending Rāma incarnations were kept in a lake full of divine nectar. The Four-Faced Brahma showed them to Hanumān. (11)

ततस्सत्वरमुत्थाय सुधासरसि मारुतिः
न्यमज्जयद् बहूनाशु मुद्रिकाग्रहणेच्छया।। 12

Hanumān got up immediately and immersed Himself in the nectar lake, intent on taking all the Rāma rings. (12)

स दृष्ट्वा बहुशो मुद्रा रामनामांकिताः शुभाः
विस्मयं परमं प्राप्तः परां प्रीतिमवाप सः।। 13

Seeing so many rings engraved with the holy name of Lord Rāma, Hanumān was surprised and felt very happy too. (13)

नमश्चकार वेगेन सप्रदक्षिणपूर्वकम्
प्रत्येकं मुद्रिकाणां वै कृतांजलिपुटः कपिः।। 14

Reverentially folding his hands specially to the Rāma rings, Hanumān briskly bowed with self-circumambulation (pradakşiņanamaskāra). (14)

उन्मज्य सरसस्तूर्णं ब्रह्माणमभिवाद्य च
निवेद्य कुशलं तस्मै रघुनाथमगात्पुनः।। 15

Still deeply immersed in that lake, Hanumān folded his hand to Brahma in respect, asked about his welfare and then reached Śrīrāmacandra. (15)

तमागतं कपिं दृष्ट्वा प्रहसन् रघुनन्दनः
अब्रवीन्मधुरं वाक्यं सादरं वदतां वरः।। 16

Seeing Hanumān that so arrived, smiling expert interlocutor Raghurāma affectionately said so in sweet tone. (16)

हनुमन् दीयतां मुद्रा सीतायै रत्नभूषिता
यद्विलम्बविषादेन प्रियं मे नाभिधित्सति।। 17

‘Oh! Hanumān! Please give that diamond studded ring to Sītā. Because the grief at not having that ring, will not make me happy’. (17)

इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा तदाज्ञाभङ्गषङ्कया
कर्णौ विलुण्ठ्य सन्त्रस्तो ययौ पश्चच्छनैश्शनैः।। 18

Hearing these words of Rāma, afraid that there is a breach in carrying out the command of Rāma, Hanumān slowly turned back, covering his ears out of guilt. (18)

अलब्धमुद्रिकं ज्ञात्वा चेष्टया वायुनन्दनं
जगाद सस्मितं वाक्यं कौसल्यानन्दवर्थनः।। 19

Understanding from the very behavior of the son of the Wind God, that the ring was not brought, Śrīrāma, the delight of mother Kowsalya, said so laughing. (19)

आवयोरन्तरं नास्ति बिम्बप्रतिमयोरिव।। 20

Hanumān Describes Brahmalōka

‘Oh! Best one among the monkeys! Come here.  My greatest devotee! There is no need for fear. There is no difference between us like between a shining disc and its reflection. (20)

तथापि ब्रह्मलोकस्य वृत्तान्तं वक्तुमर्हसि
एवमुक्तः कपिश्रेष्ठो रामेण प्रियवादिना
प्रत्युवाच यथादृष्ष्टं वचनं वदतां वरः।। 21

On Śīrāma saying in a dear tone, ‘Oh! Greatest of monkeys! Even then, describe everything that you saw in the Brahmalōka (world)’, the Chief of Monkeys and good orator, Hanumān answered as follows of all that He has actually seen. (21)

भगवन् ब्रह्मणो लोकः पुण्यराशिरिवापरः
यं दृष्ष्ट्वा परमाष्चर्यं प्राप्तो स्मि रघुनन्दन!।। 22

‘Oh! Almighty! Rāmacandra! That Brahma’s world is an abode of sacred virtues (punyarāśi). Oh! Rāma! I was greatly surprised seeing such a world. (22)

यत्र सन्निहिता नित्यं भारती ब्रह्मणो वधूः
सर्ववर्णमयी साध्वी यस्यां सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम्।। 23

Rama’s wife Sataswati, herself an amalgamation of all the colours and the best amongst ladies, is always close by. The whole world is well established in her in the form of knowledge (gńyana). (23)

यत्र स्थितः महात्मानः सर्ववेदान्तपारगाः
वेदवादरता नित्यं जितक्रोधा जितेन्द्रियाः।। 24

All the great souls staying there are well-versed in the Vēdānta (based on the ‘later part of the critical analysis’ – uttaramīmānsa) philosophy. They always discuss items of Vēda, won over anger and possess total command of their senses. (24)

अहोभाग्यमहोभाग्यं सत्यलोकनिवासिनां
रामनामामृतं यस्मात्पाययन्ति पिबन्ति च।। 25

Wonder of wonders! What a great luck of those residents of Satyaloka (Brahma’s World of Truth)? Why? Because they themselves consume the nectar of Rāma’s name and make others consume it too. (25)

सर्वे च कृतकृत्यश्च सर्वे योगपरायणाः।। 26

All residents of Satyaloka are blessed performers (kŗutakŗtya) and experts in yōga. (26)

कल्लोलमालिकालोलकनकाम्बुजपालिकं
सरो हरति चेतांसि सुधामयरसाश्रयम्।। 27

Abode of crystal clear nectar like water and with golden lotuses swaying in it by the gentle waves, the lake there wins the hearts of viewers. (27)

यन्मध्ये बहवो दृष्ट्वा रामनामाङ्कमुद्रिकाः
अन्यत्र दुर्लभाश्चेतास्त्वत्प्रसाद इव प्रभो। 28

That way, great devotion was there in a new form. Because, Brahma, by virtue of his devotion (towards You), did not show me the rings bearing the name of Rāma. (28)

तथापि भूयसी भक्तिर्भवतामेव गाहते
यद्विधिर्भक्तिलोभाभ्याम्मुद्रां नादर्शयन्मम।। 29

Oh! Great Persona! As if it is by Your benevolence, right in the middle of that lake, there are several rings inscribed with your name that cannot be seen anywhere else. (29)

यदा कोपपरीतात्मा विश्वरूपमदर्शयमम्।। 30

Then, overcome by anger, I exibited my Universal Form (viswaroopa). (30)

By virtue of the power got by worshipping your lotus feet, I prepared myself as though I am going to bring all the worlds to a halt. (31)

भवत्पादांबुजध्यानवैभवाल्लब्धवैभवः
उद्घृत्य सकलान् लोकानहमागन्तुमुद्यतः। 31

Meanwhile, through Sanatkumāra, who know your great virtues, I regained my amiability. I decided to get rid of that fear. (32)

पुनस्सनत्कुमारेण भवन्महिमवेदिना
सौम्यतां प्रापितो स्म्याशु तद्भयं हर्तुमिच्छता।। 32

Chastened by the explanation of Sanatkumāra, the lake was shown to me by Brahma. (33)

दर्शिता सरसी मह्यं तद्बोधितविरिव्म्चिना
तत्र दृष्टा मया बह्वयो भवन्नामाङ्कमुद्रिकाः।। 33

Chastened by the explanation of Sanatkumāra, the lake was shown to me by Brahma. (33)

क्ट्ष्तप्रदक्षिणस्तासां साष्टाङ्गं प्रणतो स्म्यहम्
तदा चिन्तां समगमं दृष्ट्वा त्वन्नाममुद्रिकाः।। 34

I circumabulated him and performed prostrate bows (all the body parts touching the ground; sāşţāńga). I fell into deep thought on seeing so many of the rings bearing your name. (34)

कात्र मयाहि संग्राह्या रामाज्ञावशवर्तिना
सर्वा हि रामनामाङ्काः नैकत्रास्ति विरूपता
न ग्राह्याःसकला मुद्रास्तदाज्ञावचनक्रमात्।। 35

Remaining under the influence of the command of Rāma, when will I take away the signet ring? Without any difference all are Rāma’s signet rings. As per His command, it is not proper to take away all the rings. (35)

इति संशयमापन्नः त्वदाज्ञाभङ्गकातरः
आगतो स्मि रघुश्रेष्ठ तव पादांतिकं पुनः।। 36

Oh! Best of the Raghu Clan! With such a doubt and also afraid that I may not breach Your command, I came back to your lotus feet. (36)

इत्युक्तवचनं रामो हनुमन्तमथाब्रवीत्
प्रीतो स्मि तव भक्त्या हमितरैर्दुरवापया।। 37

Rama Blesses Hanumān

To Hanumān, speaking in this manner, Rāma said so, ‘Oh! Hanumān! I am extremely pleased with your devotion, which none else can have. (37)

वरं वरय भद्रन्ते मा कुरुष्वात्र संशयं
बहवो ह्यवतारा मे समतीताश्च भाविनः
वर्तते ह्यवतारो यं तत्तत्कार्यवशानुगः।। 38

Auspiciousness be to you! Seek a boon. Do not hesitate in this. Many of my incarnations happenedin the past. This Incarnation is for achieving some specific deeds. (38)

ब्रह्मणे मम भक्ताय त्वादृशाय यतात्मने
मम प्रतिनिधिर्मुद्रा प्रतिकल्पं प्रदीयते।। 39

A ring of mine, representing me, was being given in every aeon (kalpa; a very long time cycle) to Brahma, who, like you, has control of own soul (ātmasamyamana). (39)

अतुलां मुद्रिकां रम्यां निधायामष्तसागरे
उपचारैर्बहुविधैर्मामेवाभ्यर्चयन् विधिः।। 40

Keeping the unparalleled rings in the nectar-full lake, Brahma has been worshipping them in many ways, as though he is worshipping me. (40)

नित्योत्सवं करोत्येष ह्युत्तरोत्तरबृहितम्।। 41

All these times, he is performing regular festivals grandly. (41)

एवं प्रपूजयन्ब्रह्मा निरस्तान्यप्रयोजनः
महतीं मुदमाप्नोति निक्षेपेणेव निर्धनः।। 42

Thus, without any other wishes, Brahma has been performing worships and was greatly happy, like a pauper that obtained a treasure trove. (42)

अतः कपीन्द्र! मे मुद्रा ब्रह्मसत्कारलोभिताः
सुधासरसि वर्तन्ते सव्म्चिताभ्यः परार्थश।। 43

Oh! Monkey warrior! Hence, my signet rings acquired super natural significance remaining in the necatar lake, enjoying the hospitality of Brahma. (43)

सीतामनोविनोदाय काव्म्चिदेकामिहानय
तथा क्रीडतु वैदेही बाल्ये पुत्रिकया यथा।। 44

Bring one of them for presenting to Sītā for her happiness. Sītā, who played with toy statues in childhood, can play with that. (44)

पुत्रभावमतिस्तत्र लङ्कायां मुद्रिता त्वयि
वृद्धिमाप्नोति नि£वघ्नं मुद्रिकादानगौरवात्।। 45

Oh! Hanumān! She deems you to be her son and got happiness in Lanka earlier that was provided by you. That pleasantness will definitely develop further, uninterrupted, by giving this signet ring’. (45)

इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रेमपर्याकुलाक्षरम्
प्रणम्य रामपादाब्जं प्रययौ वायुनन्दनः।। 46

Hanumā performs Rāma’s Bidding

Hearing such affectionate words of Rāma, Hanumān bowed at His lotus feet and left. (46)

गत्वा वेगेन महता सत्यलोकं निरंकुशः
जग्राह मुद्रिकामेकां सुधासरसि संस्थिताम्।। 47

He went very fast to the world of Brahma, unopposed, got into the nectar lake and picked up a signet ring. (47)

तां वहन् शिरसा यत्नात् तदाज्ञामिव मारुतिः
समीपं रघुनाथस्य क्षणादेवान्वपद्यत।। 48

On purpose, touching that signet ring to own head reverently like the command of Rāma (Rāmāgńya), son of the Wind God reached Rāma in a moment. (48)

ततः प्रादात्कपिश्रेष्ठः सीतायै राममुद्रिकाम्
पश्यतो रामचन्द्रस्य सीतापर्यंकवर्तिनः।। 49

Then the Monkey Warrior Hanumān gave that signet ring to Sītā for her to keep as she was with Rāma and as the latter was seeing. (49)

तेन दत्तां शुभां मुद्रां स्थितां भक्तिमिवात्मनि
दृष्ट्वा जग्मतुरानन्दं सीतारामौ परस्परम्।। 50

Both Rāma and Sītā together were very happy, as they looked at the signet ring that Hanumān gave; as though he took out the devotion within him and gave to them. (50)

अथाब्रवीत्कपिं रामः प्राव्म्जलिं पुरतःस्थितम्
निदेषान्तरलाभाय निरीक्षन्तं पदाम्बुजम्।। 51

Then Rāma said so to Hanumān, who was devotionally looking at the lotus feet of Rāma with folded hands, waiting for His next command. (51)

प्राप्नुहि त्वं कपिश्रेष्ठ ब्रह्मलोकाधिनाथताम्।
यतो विलोक्य तं लोकं परमां प्रीतिमाप्तवान्।। 52

Rāma’s Boon to Hanumān

Oh! Best of Monkeys! You felt very happy on seeing the Satyalōka. Hence, I bless, that you may get the authority over Brahmalōka. (52)

अहं च परमप्रीतः तव भक्त्या निरन्तया
त्वया च दण्डकारण्ये बहुधोपकृता वयम्।। 53

I am also very happy because of your unlimited devotion towards me. In Dandakāraņya (Danadaka forest; during Rāma’s forest dwelling times) you helped us very many ways. (53)

एकैकस्योपकारस्य हनुमन्नास्ति निष्कृउतिः
अतःस्सर्वहितार्थाय ब्रह्मलोकाधिपो भव।। 54

Oh! Hanumān! I cannot do return favour for every single favour that you did to us. Hence, for the goodness of all, attain the authority over the Brahmalōka. (54)

सष्जन् जगति सर्वाणि चराणि स्थावराणि च
वेदोपदिष्टमार्गेण ममाज्ञामनुपालयन्
सुखी भव कपिश्रेष्ठ भक्तरक्षणतत्परः।। 55

‘Oh! Best of Monkeys! Be always happy by creating all moving (cara) and stationary (acara) things of the world, carrying on as per Vēda traditions, obaying my command and protecting devotees’. (55)

इति तस्य प्रसादं वै प्रतिगृह्ना कपीश्वरः
तमेव मनसा ध्यायन् गन्धमादनमन्वगात्।। 56

Obtaining such a benevolance from Śrīrāma, Hanumān left for His abode, Mount Gandhamādana, all the way meditating on Śrīrāmacandra. (56)

यतो मथ्नाति गन्धौघैर्मनांसि प्रसभं गिरिः
ततो निगद्यते सन्द्रिः गन्धमादन इत्यसौ।। 57

It is called Gandhamādana – Mount of Fragrance, because it stirrs the hearts of individuals. (57)

तस्माद्गन्धप्रभावेन समाकृष्टमनाः कपिः
रेजे रम्भावने रम्ये गन्धमादनमूर्धनि।। 58

Thus, with His heart attracted by the fragrance, Hanumān remains resplendent on the summit of the Mount Gandhamādana. (58)

श्रीपराशरः
एवं हनूमता प्राप्ता ब्रह्मलोकाधिनाथता
तदाप्रभृष्ति मैत्रेय भविष्यद्ब्रह्मनामता।। 59

Śrī Parāśra:

“Oh! Mytrēya! Hanumān got authority over the Brahmalōka in this manner. From that time onwards Hanumān came to be known as Bhavişyadbrahma (Future Creator). (59)

एकैकांषो हनुमतः प्रतिकल्पं महात्मनः
जायते ब्रह्मरूपेण लोकानुग्रहकाम्यया।। 60

For the benefit of people, a part (item) of Hanumān becomes Brahma the Creator in each aeon. (60)

य इदं पुण्यमाख्यानं शृण्वन्ति च पठंति च
ते सर्वे ब्रह्मणो लोके पूज्यन्ते सर्वसम्मताः।। 61

Whoever hears or reads this sacred history of Hanumān, all of them will be worshipped in the Brahmalōka by common consent. (61)

एवंप्रभावो हनुमान्महात्मा
सुरासुराणामपि दुष्प्रधर्षः
अचेतनानामपि यद्गुणोदयः
चिनोति चैतन्यभरं सुधोपमः।। 62

The great soul Hanumān, with such an incredible impact, is unconqourable by gods as well as demons, who can impart create characteristics (guņa) to even lifeless things and has virality (caitanya) that is equal to the life giving nectar manŗta. (62)

इति श्रीपराशरसंहितायां श्रीपराशरमैत्रेयसंवादे भविष्यद्ब्रह्मताप्रभावकथनं नाम चतुःपव्म्चाशत्पटलः

Thus ends the 54th Chapter “Narration of the Impact of the Bhavişyadbrahama Concept”
