33rd Chapter (Trayastrinśatpaţalah)

Killing of Raktarōma

(Raktarōmavadha)

श्री मैत्रेय:
अथागतयाव्म्जनासूनु: नागकन्या किमुक्तवान्
प्रतिाातंच किमिति तदाचक्ष्व कृपानिधे! 1

Sage Mytrēya:

Oh! Kind Personality! Sage Parāśara! Then what did Hanumān tell the Nāga maid on arrival? What pledge was taken by him?. Please tell me”. (1)

श्री पराशर:
तत्सर्वं कथयष्यिामि श्रुणु नान्यमना मुने! 2

Seer Parāśara:

Oh! Great sage, Mytrēya! I am explaining all that story. Listen with devotion. (2)

नागकन्या समुत्थाय साष्टांग प्रणिपत्य सा
तुष्टाव श्री हनूमन्तं वचनोभिर्वेद गोचरै:।। 3

That Nāga maiden got up, gave him a bow of reverence with prostration and praised Hanumān with Vēda-based hymns. (3)

नागकन्यका स्तुति:-
आव्म्जनेय प्रभो! देव! देव! वानरसत्तम!
वेदवेद्य महायोगिन् पुराणपुरुषोत्तम।। 4

Praising Hanumān

Oh! Almighty! Lord Ańjanēya! Leader of the Gods! Best of monkey warriors! One who can be known via Vēda! Great Yōgi! Best among the men in Purāņa scripts! (4)

जगद्रूप जगन्नाथ जगदानन्द कारण!
पव्म्चानन! परंजयेति ज्ञानानन्दमय प्रभो! 5

The very Form of the world! Lord of the universe! The cause of bliss to the world! Five-Faced Hanumān! The Eternal Flame! One full of knowledge! One full of bliss! One capable of everything! (5)

सर्वभूतान्तरंगस्थ सर्वब्रह्माण्ड नायक!
परापरज्ञ! चिद्रुप! कपिवीर! नमो·स्तु ते।। 6

One who resides in the hearts of every single living creature! Leader of the Universe! Omniscient one! Monkey hero! I bow to you’. (6)

एवंश्रुत्वा नागकन्या कृतस्तोत्रं हरीश्वर:
प्रीतो ब्रवीदुत्पलाक्षीं दीनां नभ्रमुखांबुजाम्।। 7

Happy at the invocation by the Nāga maiden, Hanumān saw the pitiable Utpalākşi, with her lotus like face bent down, and said so. (7)

श्री हनुमान्:
कस्माद्धीति: कथं दैन्यं देशत्यागं कथं? तव
किमभीष्टतत्करोमि सत्य वद वरानने! 8

Śrī Hanumān:

Oh! Beautiful-faced one! From whom are you frightened? Why such a downcast situation? Why had you to leave your land? Tell mw your wish. I will fulfill it’. (8)

नागकन्यका:
स्वामिन्नार्त जनाधार! रक्तरोमो महासुर:
नागलोकं समासाद्य तत्रत्यानखिलान् जनान्। 9

Nāga Maiden:

Lord! Refuge for the downcast! A mighty demon named Raktarņma entered the land of Nāgās, harassing all the dwellers there. (9)

स्त्री बाल वृद्धान् संपीड्य गर्वोत्कर्ष समन्वित:
महदैश्वर्यं सम्पन्नां नागलोक निवासिभि:।।
सदा संसेवितां पूज्यां सिद्धाचरण पन्नगै:।। 10

Women, children and even the aged are harassed by that prideful evil one, very rich, always forcing to service, the dwellers of the land of Nāgās and be worshipped by the Siddha, Cāraņa and Nāgā tribes, (10)

नागलोकाधिपां दुष्टो मां दृष्ट्वा मदनांतुर:
नीचवृत्या दुराचार: पापबुद्धिं तदाप स:।। 11

And the leader of the land of Nāgās, me, that evil one saw; with intense sexual desire, he started ill-behaving and doing indecent things with an evil intent. (11)

अत: पलायमाना हं सुषेण शरणं गता
आश्वास्य सो पि मां दीनां त्वन्मंत्रमुपदेष्टवान्।। 12

That is why, I ran away and took refuge with Suşēņa. He consoled me, the pitiable one, and imparted to me Your holy mantra. (12)

तन्मंत्र जपसामथ्र्यात् मत्पूर्वसुकृता दपि
तव त्पादयुगलं दृष्टं ब्रह्मादिनां सुदुर्लभम्।। 13

By virtue of the capacity attained by reciting your mantra and by virtue of the good deeds I did in my previous birth, I could have the holy vision of your lotus feet, that even Brahma and other can not get. (13)

मम राज्यसुखावाप्ति: नागविष्टपवासिनाम्
यथा सुखच भवति तथा वद दयानिधे!
इत्युक्त्वा श्रीहनुमत: पादयो र्निपपातह।। 14

Oh! Merciful one! Kindly grant me the bliss of our land to me and to my Nāgā people’. Thus requesting, the Naga maiden fell on the lotus feet of Lord Hanumān. (14)

उत्तिष्ठ नागकन्ये! त्व भयं त्यज महासुरात्
कुर्यामभीष्टसिद्धिं त्वां देव्यागच्छ मया सह।। 15

Hanumān goes to the Land of Nāgāas

Oh! Nāgā maiden! Rise. Leave the fear of that demon. I can fulfill your wish. Oh! Dēvī (Madam)! Come with me’. (15)

सहोत्पलाक्ष्या हनुमान् प्राप्त तन्नगविष्टपम्
रुधिरस्त्राव रोमाण रक्तवर्ण विलोचन्।। 16

Along with Utpalākşi, Hanumān reached the land of Nāgās and saw the red-eyed demon Raktarōma, (16)

शैलनायक संकाश शरीरं घोररूपिणम्
दंष्ट्राकराल वदनं सर्वायुध करद्वयम्।। 17

With a mountain sized body, a fearful face, both his hands bearing all types of weapons, (17)

दुष्कर्मशीलं ब्रह्मांड व्यापी गार्दभनिस्वनम्
चंडप्रतापिनं यक्ष गंधर्वासुर रक्षसाम्।। 18

One that performs evil deeds by nature, one whose donkey-braying like voice rings as though spread in the whole universe. (18)

दुर्घर्षं नीतिरहितं ज्ञानहीनं महासुरम्
तं दृष्ट्वा रक्तरोमाणं आश्वर्यकरमानस:।। 19

One who can not be kept away, one without principles and knowledge, the mighty demon Raktatōma; seeing whom the surprised grat monkey warrior Hanumān, (19)

समीपस्थामुत्पलाक्षि अब्रवीत्सवगोत्तम: 20

Said so to Utpalākşi standing near him.(20)

नानाशैलेषु लोकेषु नानारण्येषु मानिनि
संकटेषु महायुद्धे ष्वधकष्ट परायणम्।। 21

Oh!Lady! In different mountains, worlds, forests and during different troubles and wars; one full of evil, (21)

भीमाकारं भीमशौर्यं विकृतं लोककण्टकम्
गर्वोन्मत्त महाकायं महोग्रं राक्षसाधमम्।। 22

With terrifying form, frightening valour, ugliest appearance; troubler of all worlds and fear-creating huge dangerous body; (22)

एवं विधं यातुधानं न पश्यामि कदाचन।। 23

This type of evil demon, I have never seen’. (23)

सर्वेंषामि तयसाध्यं तं मत्वा दैत्यं कपीश्वर:
हंतुकामो ययौ तस्य समीपं दृष्ट रक्षस:।। 24

In this way, knowing that this demon is unconquerable by any one and deciding to kill him, Hanumān went near the evil-doer. (24)

आगच्छतं हनूमंतं गतभी श्चण्डविक्रम:
रक्तरोमा महावीर: प्रोवाच कठिनोक्तिभि: 25

Hanuman – Raktarōma fight

Raktarōma the fearless one, full of sharp valour and a great warrior said the following harsh words to Hanumān approaching him. (25)

अहो वानर दुर्बुध्दे कथ मागम्यते त्वया।।
ब्रह्मादीना मसाध्यं मां न जानासि हरीश किं? 26

Oh! Evil-minded monkey! Why are you coming (towards me)? Ańjanēya! Didn’t you realize that I can not be conquered by even Brahma and other greats’. (26)

इत्येवं रक्त रोमाख्य यातुधानस्य भाषितम्
श्रुत्वा कठोरं हनुमान् स्थितो रुद्र इवापर:।। 27

Hearing such harsh things from the demon Raktarōma, Hanumān turned in to the eternal Rudra (fierce form of Śiva). (27)

नानाविधं चित्रयुद्धं कुपितो रक्षसासह
कृत्वा वालेन सम्बध्वा जवे नाभिजघानह।। 28

Angry Hanumān carried out most intriguing duels with him and wrapped him in His enormous tail and beat him rapidly. (28)

हनुमत्ताडितो रक्त रोमाख्यो दनुजो रुदन्
भूकम्प जनयपन्भूमौ पातेव कुलाचल:।। 29

So beaten by Hanumān, Raktarōma howled loudly and fell on the ground like the Kula mountain (one of the 7 holy mountains) trembling the entire Earth. (29)

गतासुं रक्तरोमाणं कृत्ववा विजयवानभूत्
तस्मिन्काले पुष्पवृष्टिं सुमूचु स्सुरसत्तमा:।।30

Hanumān became victorious by taking the life of that Raktarōma. At that time the gods rained down flowers. (30)

यक्ष प्रन्नग गन्धर्वा: नारदाद्या: स्सुरर्षय:
तुष्टुवु श्श्रीहनुमन्तं जयश्रीमन्त मव्यययम्।। 31

Yakşa, Nāga, Gandharva and other demi-gods and Nārada and other holy seers praised the victorious and eternal Hanumān. (31)

नागकन्ये! श्रेष्ठतमा मद्धक्ताना मपि घृवम्
इत्युक्त्त्वा हनूमान्तस्मै सर्वाभीष्टवरान्नदौ।। 32

Then Hanumān said, ‘Oh! Nāgā maiden! You have really became the best anong my devotees’. Then He gave her the desired boons.(32)

अगणित महिमो हि कनयकां ताम्
मुनिवर! पत्रगविष्टपे भिषिच्च
वनचरकुलशेखरो हनूमान्
प्रमुख मवाप शुभा मवाप्य पम्पाम्।। 33

Oh! Mytrēya! That immensely dignified and best of monkey warrior, after leading her to the land of Nāgās, then reached Lake Pampā and was happy.(33)

तत्र पम्पासर स्तीरे कव्म्चित्कालं विह्रत्य स:
त्थक्तुं परिचितां पम्पां नालं स्वांतविनोदिनीम्।। 34

Having spent some time happily on the banks of Pampā, Hanumān became incapable of leaving that pleasant Pampā surrounds. (34)

स्वर्णरम्भा वनोद्धस परितोपत्य कम्बलात्
इयेष सपरीवार: स गन्तुं गन्धमादनम्।। 35

(However) He decided to go, along with his entrouge, to the Gandhamādana moiuntain thast is radiant with golden banana groves and surrounded by plenty of water. (35)

तत: कपिकुलाग्रणी: शिखरीशेखरकादलम्
स्फुरत्पल सुपालिका सुववरभ्रधारामृतम्

नदत्पिककुलावित श्रुतिमुख स्फुट राविणं
जगाम करभाजुंनं समघिरुह्मा वाहोत्तमाम्।। 36

Then Hanumān left on his camel along with His army to the Gandhamādana mountain, where fruit juices rain like heavenly nectar (amīita) and cuckoos keep on singing sweetly. (36)

इति श्री पराशर संहितायां श्री पराशर मैत्रेय संवादे रक्तरोमवधोनाम त्रयस्त्रिंशत्पटल:

Thus ends the 33rd Chapter (TrayastrinśatpaţalahKilling of Raktarōma” (Raktarōmavadha) of Śrī Parāśara Samhitā
