श्रीपराशर्ः
स्तोत्रांतरं प्रवक्ष्यामि हनुम त्प्रतिपादकं
शृणु मैत्रेय! विप्रेंद्र ह्यष्टोत्तर शताधिकम || 1
Parāśara:
“Oh! Best amongst Brāhmin people! Great Sage Mytrēya! I am explaining the story of the 108 Name Hymns (Aşţōttara Śatanāma Kathanam), another hymn (stōtram) that narrates a lot about Hanumān.
आगस्त्येन पुरा प्रोक्तं सुतीक्ष्णाय महात्मने
सर्वपाप क्ष्यकरं सदा विजयवर्धनम् || 2
This famous stōtra that removes one’s sins and offers victories always, was once described by the great sage Agastya to the great-soul Suteekşņa.
सुतीक्ष्ण उवाचः
भगवन्! केन मंत्रेण स्तुत्वा तं भुवि मानवः
अयत्नेनैव लभते सहसा सर्वसंपदः || 3
‘Oh! Great Sage Agastya! By which mantra one worships Hanumān and gets all the riches, without efforts,
भूत प्रेत पिशाचादि पूतना ब्रह्मरक्षसा
कूष्मांड किन्नराधीश रक्षो यक्षो खगादिना || 4
By which mantra can one get rid of the effects of spirits and death-related-creatures, effects of infant ills like Pootana and others, demons equal to Brahma, difficulties from Kooşmānda named and other wandering spirits, problems related to lower Kinnera demi-Gods, demons, Yakşa semi-Gods, of birds and others,
निधनं चैव दैत्यानां दानदानां विशेषतः
अपस्मार ग्रहाणां च स्त्रीग्रहाणां तथैव च || 5
Serious troubles from demons of Daitya, Dānava and other types, faints, problems of planetary positions, female planet troubles; get neutralised,
महामृत्यु ग्राहाणां च नीच चोर ग्रहात्मनां
अन्येषां चाति घोराणां सर्पाणां क्रूरकर्मणाम् || 6
Death causing planets, lowly planets, troubles from thieves and very dangerous troubles from cruel snakes,
वात पित्त कफादीनां ज्वराणा मतिरोगिणाम
शिरो नेत्रमुखा स्यांघ्रि गुद घ्राणोदरी भवाम् || 7
Fevers due to swellings (vāta). bile (pitta) and phlegm (kapha), diseases of the head, of the eyes, of the face, of the inside of the mouth, maladies of the legs, of the anus, of the nose, of the stomach,
तथैव राजयक्ष्माणां शांतिः केन प्रदृश्यते || 8
Similarly tuberculosis and others; what neutralises all and gives peace?
चोरादि राजशस्त्रादि विष दुस्स्वप्न भीतिषु
सिंह व्याघ्र वराहादि श्वन्या ष्वापत्सु भीतिषु
किं जप्तव्यं महाभाग ब्रूहि शिष्यस्य मे मुने || 9
When there is fear of thieves, of kings, of weapons, of poisons, of bad dreams and when there is imminent danger from lion, tiger and other wild animals; Oh! Sage Agstya! Please tell whom we have to worship?’
अगस्त्य उवाचः
सुहृदो मम भक्तस्य तव रक्षाकरं वरं
प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणु श्वैकं सुतीक्ष्ण! सुसमाहितः || 10
Agastya:
“Oh! Sutīkşa! You are of good friendly nature and a devotee of mine. Please listen! I am telling you a mantra that gives you great protection.
उप्रेंद्रेण पुरेंद्राय प्रोक्तं नारायणात्मना
त्रैलोक्यैश्वर्य सिध्ध्यर्धं अभावाय च विद्विषाम || 11
Once upon a time, Lord Krişņa, the very incarnation of Lord Sreemannārāyaņa, told this to Indra to free him of the troubles from enemies and making him the richest in the three worlds.
सभायां नारदादीनां ऋषीनां पुण्य कर्मणां
उपविश्य मया तत्र श्रुतं तस्य पसादतः || 12
By the grace of Lord Krişņa, I too was present in that council full of great scholars like the great sage Nārada, and so, could hear it.
अश्टोत्तरशतं नाम्ना मतिगुह्यं हनूमतः
नोक्तपूर्व मिदं ब्रह्मन् रहस्यं यस्यकस्यचित् || 13
This, known as the Aşţōttaraśatam (108) is the most secret out of all the mantras told on Hanumān. Oh! Good Brāhmin, this was, so far, not told to anyone.
अस्य श्री हनुमदष्टोत्तरशत दिव्यनामश्तोत्र
मंत्रस्य अगस्त्यो भगवान ऋषिः अनुष्टुप् छंदः |
श्रीहनुमान् देवता! मारुतात्मज इति बीजं |
अंजनासूनु रिति शक्तिः | वायुपुत्रेति कीलकं |
मम श्री हनुमत्प्रसाद सिध्द्यर्थे जपे विनियोगः || 14
The Mantra Features
Sage Agastya is the seer (Ŗşi), the meetr is Anuşţup, the lord is Hanumān Himself, Mārutātmaja (son of Wind God) is the key (beeja), Ańjanaasoonuh is the power (śakti) and Vāyuputra (son of Wind God) is the key (keelakam) for this Hanumadaśţōttara satanāma stōtra. The recitation (japa) is dedicated (viniyoga) for the attainment of Hanumān’s benevolence.
ओम नमो भगवते आंजनेयाय अंगुष्टाभ्यां नमः
ओम नमो भगवते वायुपुत्राय तर्जनीभ्यां नमः
ओम नमो भगवते केसरिप्रियनंदनायमद्य माभ्यां नमः
ओम नमो भगवते रामदूताय अनामिकाभ्यां नमः
ओम नमो भगवते लक्ष्मणप्राणदात्रे कनिष्टिकाभ्यां नमः
ओम नमो भगवते श्रीहनुमते करतलकरपृष्टाभ्यां नमः
ओम नमो भगवते आंजनेयाय हृदयाय नमः
ओम नमो भगवते वायुपुत्राय शिरसे स्वाहा
ओम नमो भगवते केसरि प्रियनंदनाय शिखायै वषट्
ओम नमो भगवते रामदूताय कवचाय हुं
ओम नमो भगवते लक्ष्मण प्राणदात्रे नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट्
ओम नमो भगवते श्रीहनुमते अस्त्राय फट्
भू र्भुव स्सुव रो मिति दिग्बंधः
Ōm namō bhagavatē Āńjanēyāya, anguşţābyām namah (Touch the thumbs)
Ōm namō bhagavatē Vāyuputrāya, tarjaneebyām namah (Touch the index fingers)
Ōm namō bhagavatē Kēsareepriyanandanāya, madhyamābyām namah (Touch the tmiddle fingers)
Ōm namō bhagavatē Rāmadooţāya, anāmikābyām namah (Touch the ring fingers)
Ōm namō bhagavatē Lakşmaņaprāņdātrē, kanişţikābyām namah (Touch the little fingers)
Ōm namō bhagavatē Śreehanumatē, karatalakarapŗuşţābyām namah (Touch the top and bottom sides of the palms)
So performing the hand gesticulations (karanyāsa), perform the orderly body touching (ańganyāsa).
Ōm namō bhagavatē, Āńjanēyāya hŗdayāya namah (Touch the heart)
Ōm namō bhagavatē, Vāyuputāya śirasē swāhā (Touch the head)
Ōm namō bhagavatē Kēsareepriyanandanāya, śikhāyai vaşaţ (Touch the hair tuft on the head)
Ōm namō bhagavatē Rāmadooţāya, kavacāya hum (Touch the shoulders)
Ōm namō bhagavatē Lakşmaņaprāņdātrē, nēţtratrayāya vouşaţ (Touch the eyes)
Ōm namō bhagavatē Śreehanumatē, astrābya phaţ (Touch the left hand with the right hand taken around the head)
After so performing the eight-directional binding (nyāsa) dhyāna has to be performed.
ध्यानं
प्ंपातट वनोद्धेशे परमर्षि निषेविते
परित स्सिद्द गंधर्व किन्न रोरग सेविते || 15
In the forest on the bank of River Pampa, where all the sages are sitting, where there are, all around, siddhas (the perfected ones), gandharvas (heavenly singers), kinneras (celestial lovers, half human half bird) and nagas (Cobra snake forms),
निर्वैर मृगसिंहादि नानासत्व निषेविते
मधुरे मध्ररालापे मनोज्ञ्नतल कंदरे || 16
Where deer lions and such mutually enemy animals live without any enmity, very soul-soothingly beautiful places with musical notes, where there are good caves,
मतंगपर्वत प्रांत मानसाति मनोहरे
महासिंह गुहेगेहे उपरंजित पश्चिमे || 17
Giving peace to the mind like Mount Matunga, that have the western side full of ruddy tawny colour that look like caves of great lions (of the dusk),
अतींद्रिय मनोभारैः अतिमन्मथ काननैः
शमादि गुणसंपन्नैः अतीत षडरातिभिः || 18
Having forests that are beyond the heaviness in body parts and soul, the incidence of romantic feelings and (those) full of tranquility (sama) and self-control (dama), those that have won over the six enemies of the mind (arişadvarga, namely, desire, anger, greed, attachment, arrogance and jealousy),
निखिलागम तत्वज्ञ्नैः मुनिभि र्मुदितात्मभिः
उपास्यमानव द्र्भाजन् मणिपीठ उपस्थितम् || 19
Knower of the nature of all the sciences (śāstras), worshipped by such ŗşis that could attain inner soul bliss (atmānanda sandhāya), sitting on a diamond studded seat,
नल नीलमुखे श्चापि वानरेंद्रै रुपासितं
समुदंचित वालाग्रं समग्र मणिभूषणम् || 20
Served by great monkey warriors like Nala, Neela and others, decked with many ornaments made of precious stones,
शमंतक महोरस्क समाहित भुजद्वयं
परार्थ्य पद्मरागादि स्फुर न्मकरकुंडलम् || 21
The chest adorning the şyamantakamaņi (most famous diamond with magical owners) and the two mighty arms, having makarakundalas (ear rings in the shape of crocodile – makara) studded with padmarāga (sapphires that have particular mix of orange and pink),
वज्रपातांकित तनुं वज्रपिंगक्ष भीषणं
स्वर्णाब्ज केसर प्रख्य शिरोरुह विराजितम् || 22
With a diamond strong body which withstood the hit by Indra’s vajrāyudha weapon, one with burnished gold coloured eyes (pingākşa), with shining hair like the pollen filaments of golden lotus flowers,
नवर्त्नांचित स्वर्ण विचित्र वनमालया
आसीन पाद्पधोज मापन्नार्ति निवारणम् || 23
The Lord, the remover of the difficulties of devotees seeking His protection, who is sitting on a seat at the base of a tree, wearing strange garland made of different varieties of forest flowers,
करुणा वरुणावास मरुणारुण मंडलम्
किर णरुणि तोपांत चरणे नवहारिणम् || 24
The merciful One in a vivid yellow-coloured clothing, with His feet shining in the dusk’s red luminance from the foot ornaments made of nine types of precious stones,
कारणं सुरकार्याणा मसुराणां निवारणं
भूषणं हि नगेंद्रस्य मानसाचल पारगम् || 25
The very cause for the divine actions, and destroyer of the ill deeds of demons, the ornament of the Mount Gandhamādana, One with the speed of the inner soul,
पूरणं प्रणताशानं चरणा योधन प्रियं
स्मर णापह्रु ताघौघं भरणावहितं सताम् || 26
The One that fulfils the wishes of the humble ones, the One that likes fighting with own foot, the One that removes all the sins if just his name is taken, the One that sustains good people,
शरणागत संत्राण कारणैक व्रतक्षमं
क्षाणा दासुररजेंद्र तनयप्राण हारिणम् || 27
The One that has the protection to asylum seekers as the only activity, the One that killed the Akşaya, the son of Rāvaņa in a trice,
पवमानसुतं वीरं परीतं पनसाधिभिः
इथ्थं ध्याय न्नम न्नेव चेतसा साधकोत्तमः
सर्वा न्मामा नवाप्नोति नात्र कार्या विचारणा || 28
The One surrounded by Pavana and other monkey greats; by meditation and bowing to such Hanumān in this (below) manner the best devotees can get every wish fulfilled.
ओं नमः प्लवगेंद्राय वायुपुत्राय वालिने
वालाग्नि दग्ध लंकाय बालार्कज्योतिषे नमः || 29
The Stotra
Ōm Plavangēndrāya namah, (reverential bow to the best amongst the monkeys), Ōm Vāyuputrrāya namah (reverential bow to the son of Wind God), Ōm Vāylinē namah (reverential bow to the son One with a great tail), Ōm Vālāgnidagdhalankāya namah (reverential bow to the One that burnt down Lanka city with the fire from his tail), Ōm Bālārkajyōtişē namah (reverential bow to the One that shines like the rising Sun).
आंजनेयाय महते प्रभंजनसुताय ते
प्रणतार्तिहृते तुभ्यं प्रमादाद्भुतचेतसे || 30
Reverential bow to the son of Ańjana, reverential bow to the great personality, reverential bow to the son of the Wind God, reverential bow to the One that removes the difficulties of those taking asylum under Him, reverential bow to the One that has a wonderful soul.
प्राचेतस प्रणयिने नमस्ते सुरवैरिणे
वीराय वीरवंद्याय वीरोन्मत्ताय विद्विषाम् || 31
Reverential bow to the One that respects sage Vālmeeki. Reverential bow to the antagonist of demons (bad individuals). Reverential bow to the valorous One. Reverential bow to the One that gets enraged at the valour of enemies.
विशाधिकाय वेद्याय विश्वव्यापि शरीरिणे
विष्णुभक्ताय भक्तानां उपकर्त्रे जितात्नने || 32
Reverential bow to the best amongst people. Reverential bow to the One to be known. Reverential bow to the One whose body extends to the whole universe. Reverential bow to the devotee of Lord Vişņu. Reverential bow to the well-wisher of devotees. Reverential bow to the One that won over His sole objective.
नवमालाग्र वालाय पवमानात्मने नमः
कृतमानाय कृत्येषु वीतरागाय ते नमः || 33
Reverential bow to the One with a new garland at the tip of His tail. Reverential bow to the One with spiritual realised soul. Reverential bow to the One the performer of actions. Reverential bow to the One with a philosophical bent of mind (quietude).
वालधृत महेंद्राय सूर्यपुत्र हितैषिणे
बलसूदन मित्राय वरदाय नमो नमः || 34
Reverential bow to the One that held Mount Mahēndra by tail. Reverential bow to the well-wisher of Reverential bow to the friend of Indra. Reverential bow to the One that bestows boons.
शमादिगुण निष्टाय शांताय शमितारये
शत्रुग़्घ्नाय नम स्तुभ्यं शंबररिजिते नमः || 35
Reverential bow to the one adept at control of senses (indriyanigraha) and other skills. Reverential bow to the One peaceful minded. Reverential bow to the One that destroys enemies. Reverential bow to the One that won over Manmatha (Cupid the romantic).
जानकीक्लेश संहर्त्रे जनकानंदनदायिने
लंघि तोदधये तुभ्यं तेजसां निधये नमः || 36
Reverential bow to the One that removed the grief of Mother Sīta. Reverential bow to the One that gave bliss to Janaka. Reverential bow to the One that crossed the sea. Reverential bow to the abode of radiance.
नित्याय नित्यानंदाय नैष्टिक ब्रह्मचारिणे
ब्रह्मांडव्याप्त देहाय भविष्यद्ब्रह्मणे नमः || 37
Reverential bow to the One that always exists. Reverential bow to the One that is always blissful. Reverential bow to the One morally a celibate. Reverential bow to the One with the body spreading everywhere. Reverential bow to the future Brahma (Creator).
ब्रह्मास्त्र वारकाया स्तु सदस द्भमवेदिने
नमो वेदांतविदुषे वेदाध्ययनशालिने || 38
Reverential bow to the One that could stop the terrible Brahmāstra Reverential bow to the knower of the elite studies (Brahmavidya) featureful (saguņa) yet featureless (nirguņa) One. Reverential bow to the One well-versed in the Upanishats (essence of Vēda philosophy). One. Reverential bow to the One that always studies the Vēdas.
नखायुधाय नाथाय नक्षत्राधिप वर्चसे
नमो नागारि सेव्याय नम स्सुग्रीवमंत्रिणे || 39
Reverential bow to the One with nails as weapons. Reverential bow to the One that is my Lord. Reverential bow to the One that has brightness of the Moon. Reverential bow to the One served by the Great Eagle, Garuda. Reverential bow to the Minister of Sugreeva.
दशास्यदर्प हंत्रे च छाया प्राणापहारिणे
गगनात्वर गतये नमो गरुडरंहसे || 40
Reverential bow to the One that dented the pride of Ravaņa. Reverential bow to the One that took the life of Simhikā, the shadow grabber (chāyāgrāhi). Reverential bow to the One that travels fast in the sky. Reverential bow to the One with speed equal to that of Garuda.
गुहानुजाय गुह्याय गंभीरपतये नमाः
शत्रुघ्नाय नम स्तुभ्यं शरांतर विहारिणे || 41
Reverential bow to the the brother of Lord Kumāraswāmy (another son of Śiva). Reverential bow to the One that possess secret nature. Reverential bow to the destroyer of enemies. Reverential bow to the One that is deft to move between the arrows of the enemy.
राघव प्रिय्दूताय लक्ष्मण प्राणदायिने
लंकिणी सत्त्व संहर्त्रे चैत्यप्रासाद भंजिने || 42
Reverential bow to the emissary of the Lord of Raghu clan (Śreerāma). Reverential bow to the One that donated life to Lakşmaņa. Reverential bow to the One that dented the might of Lankiņi, the female gate-guradian of the Lanka city. Reverential bow to the One that destroyed the prayer building in Lanka.
भवांबुराशेः पाराय परविक्रम हारिणे
नमो वज्रशरीराय वज्राशनि निवारणे || 43
Reverential bow to the One that makes you cross the ocean of this mundane world. Reverential bow to the One that removes the valour of enemies. Reverential bow to the One that has a body as strong as a diamond. Reverential bow to the One that saves from the thunder strike of the diamond weapon (vajrāyudha).
नमो रुद्रावताराय रौद्राकाराय वैरिणां
किंकरांतक रूपाय मंत्रिपुत्र निहंत्रिणे || 44
Reverential bow to the incarnation of Ēśvara (Śiva). Reverential bow to the One that is ferociousness incarnated against enemies. Reverential bow to the destroyer of the workers of Yama (God of Death). Reverential bow to the One that killed the seven sons of the Minister (of Ravaņa that attacked him in the Aśōkavana).
महाबलाय भीमाय महतांपतये नमः
मैनाककृत मानाय मनोवेगाय मालिने || 45
Reverential bow to the mighty strong One. Reverential bow to the most ferocious One. Reverential bow to the best amongst the great-souls (mahātma). Reverential bow to the One that was felicitated by Mount Mynāka. Reverential bow to the One that has the speed of the mind (manōvēga). Reverential bow to the One that wears a garland.
कदळीवन संस्थाय समस्सर्वार्थदायिने
बंद्र व्याकरनज्ञ्नाय तत्वज्ञ्नानार्थ वेदिने || 46
Reverential bow to the One that resides in the banana groves. Reverential bow to the One that gives all the riches. Reverential bow to the One that is adept in the earliest grammar texts (Indravyākaraņa – earlier to Pānini’s). Reverential bow to the One that knows the use of knowledge about (Truth propagating) logic (tattvagńyāna).
कारुण्यनिधये तुभ्यं कुमारब्रह्मचारिणे
नमो गंभीर शब्दाय सर्व गह निवारिणे || 47
Reverential bow to the abode of mercy. Reverential bow to the bachelor boy. Reverential bow to the One that has a serious (awe-inspiring) voice. Reverential bow to the One that removes the ills from every type of planet.
सुभगाय सुशांताय सुमुखाय सुवर्चसे
सुदुर्जयाय सुक्षाय सुमन प्रियबांधवे || 48
Reverential bow to the very rich (in qualities – bhāgyavanta). Reverential bow to the One that is of peaceful nature. Reverential bow to the One with a captivatingly peaceful face. Reverential bow to the One with great radiance. Reverential bow to the One that cannot be defeated. Reverential bow to the One with a micro body. Reverential bow to the One that is the dear friend of celestial beings and scholars.
सुरारिवर्ग संहर्त्रे हर्वृक्षानीश्व्रराय ते
भूतप्रेतादि संहर्त्रे भूतावेशकराय ते || 49
Reverential bow to the One that destroys the demon groups. Reverential bow to the lord of monkey and bear warriors. Reverential bow to the One that neutralises ghosts, hungry ghosts and other harmful creatures. Reverential bow to the One that induces great rage (bhootāvēśa – against bad/sin).
नमो भूतनिवेषाय भूताधिपतये नमः
नमो ग्रहस्वरूपाय ग्रहाधिपतये नमः || 50
Reverential bow to the One that is worshipped by all that have life. Reverential bow to the lord of spirits. Reverential bow to the One that is a form of a planet (grahaswaroopa). Reverential bow to the lord of planets or heavenly bodies (grahādhipati).
नमो ग्रह निवाराय उग्राय चोग्रवर्चसे
ब्रह्मतंत्र स्वतंत्राय शंभुतंत्र स्वतंत्रिणे || 51
Reverential bow to the One that removes the ill-effects of heavenly bodies. Reverential bow to the one with ferocious form. Reverential bow to the One with a stunning brightness. Reverential bow to the One that is free from all Vedic rituals (Brahmatantra). Reverential bow to the One that is free from all rituals associated with Śambhutantra (Śivite rituals).
हरितंत्र स्वतंत्राय तुभ्यं हनुमते नमः
अष्टोत्तरशतं संख्या हनूम न्नाम मूर्तयः || 52
Reverential bow to the One that is free from all Vişņutantra (Vişņavite rituals). Reverential bow to Thee, Hanumaān. Thus, there are 108 names of Lord Hanumaān.
पुरतः परतो व्यापी मम पातु महाबलः
शांति रस्तु शिवं चास्तु सत्या स्स्ंतु मनोरथाः || 53
Benefits (Phala)
May Hanumaān, the mightily strong One spread in the front and in the back, protect me. May grant peace. Let there be auspiciousness. May all the wishes to be fulfilled.
रक्षा भवतु यौनौवा विविधे वरदेहिनां
अविघ्नो दुःखहानि श्च वांछासिद्धि श्शुभोदयाः
प्रजासिद्दि श्च सामर्थ्यं मनोन्नति रनामयम् || 54
May the different types of people get protection in their mother’s womb itself. All obstacles of people will be driven away by this Aşţōttara śatanāma stōtra (108-name hymn) of Hanumaān.
