75th Chapter (Pańcassaptatih Paţalah)

“The 108-Name Hanumān Laudatory Hymn”

(Hanumadaşōttaraśatanāmastōtram)

शृणु मैत्रेय! मंत्रज्ञ्नाष्टोत्तरशत संज्ञ्निकः
नम्ना हनुमत श्चैव स्तोत्रूणां शोकविनाशनम् || 1

Śrī Paraāśara:

Oh! Knower of mantras! Great sage Mytrēya! Listen! Whoever recites this Hanumānaşţōttaraśatanāmastōtram (108-Name HanumānLaudatory Hymn) will be free from all worries. (1)

पूर्वं शिवेन पार्वत्याः कथितं पापनाशनं
गोप्यास्गोप्यतरं चैव सर्वेप्सित फलप्रदम् || 2

This stōtram was once told by Lord Śiva to Mother Pārvatee. This, which fulfills all the wishes, has to be kept most secret. (2)

रुषि स्स्दाहिवः प्रोक्ता चंदोनुष्टुपु बुदाहृतः
हनुमान् देवता प्रोक्ता ह्रां बीजं मिति स्मृतः
ह्रीं शक्ति र्रूंं कीलकं च प्रसादे च विनियोगः || 3

Know that the seer (ŗşi) for this 108-Name Hanumān Laudatory Hymn is the Eternal Śiva; the meter is anuşţup; Hanumān is the God; the seed letter is hrām; the power śaktiis hreem; the key is hroom. The utility or use (viniyōga) is for the benevolance (prasāda) of Hanumān. (3)

ध्यानम्
ध्याये द्बालदिवाकर द्युति निभं देवारि दर्पापहं
देवेंद्र प्रमुख पशस्त यशसं देदीप्यमानं रुचा
हस्ताब्जै रसि खेट पुस्तक सुधाकुंभांसुशाद्रीन हलं
खत्वांगं फणि भूरुहं च दधतं सर्वारि गर्वापहम् || 4

Dhyānam (Meditation)

To be meditated upon is the enemy-destroyer Hanumān, the one that has brilliance that is equal to that of the rising Sun, the one that dents the pride of the demons, the one famous for being praised by Indra and other greats, the one that is unparalleled in brilliance, the one that holds in His lotus like hands – sword, disc guard, book, nectar pot, elephant goad, mountain, plough, leg of a cot, serpent, tree and other weapons. (4)

हनुमान् स्थिरकीर्तिश्च त्र्णीकृत जगत्रयः
सुरपूज्य सुरश्रेष्टो सर्वाधीश स्सुखप्रदः || 5

Hanumān, the one with a solid fame, the one that considers the three worlds equal to a blade of grass, the one worthy of worship by Gods, the best amongst the Gods, lord of everything, the one that gives happiness, (5)

ज्ञानप्रदो ज्ञानगम्यो विज्ञानी विश्वदंदितः
वज्रदेहो रुद्रमूर्ती दग्ध लंका वरप्रदः || 6

The one that gives wisdom, the one whose aim is wisdom, a scientific personality, the one bowed to by the entire world, the one with a body like the diamond, the one that has the Rudra Form, the one that burnt down Lanka, the one that gives boon, (6)

इंद्र्जि ध्यकर्ता च रावणस्य भयंकरः
कुंभकर्णस्य भयदो रमादासो कपीश्वरः || 7

The one that frightens Indrajit (son of Rāvaņa), the one that is a terror to Rāvaņa, the one that frightens Kumbhakarņa (brother of Rāvaņa), the devotee of Lakşmi– the goddess of wealth, the leader of the monkey warriors, (7)

लक्ष्मणानंदको देवो कपिसैन्यस्य रर्क्षकः
सुग्रीवो सचिवो मंत्री पर्वतोत्पाटनो प्रभुः || 8

The one that gave joy to Lakşmaņa, the God, the protector of the monkey army, the minister to Sugreeva, the one that knows how to conduct consultations, the one that pulled out a mountain, the capable one, (8)

आजन्मब्रह्मचारी च गंभीरध्वनि भीतिदः
सर्वेशंः ज्वरहारी च ग्रहकूट विनाशकः || 9

The one that is on the path of Brahman the entire life, the one with a deep resonant voice, the one that frightens, the lord of everything, the one that can remove fevers, the one that can destroy the evil congregations of planets, (9)

डाकिनी ध्वंसक स्सर्वो भूत प्रेत विदारणः
विषहर्ता च विभवो नित्य स्सर्वलोकनाथः || 10

The destroyer of the accursed witch (dhākinee), the one that can remove all devils and spirits, the one with greatness, the one that is always (nitya) there,the lord of all the worlds, (10)

भगवान्कुंडलॉ दंडी स्वर्णयज्ञनोपवीत्
आग्निगर्भ स्स्वर्णकांतिः द्विभुज स्तु कृतांजलिः || 11

The God, the one with ear hangings, the one with a staff/mace, the one with a golden sacred thread (janēu), the one having fire in the interior (agnigarbha), the one with a golden glow, the one with two shoulders, the one that folds hands in devotion, (11)

ब्रह्मास्त्रवारण श्शांतो ब्रह्मण्यो ब्रह्मरूपधृत्
शत्रहन्ता कार्यदीक्षो ललाटाक्षोपरेष्वरः || 12

The one that halted the greatest missile (Brahmāstra), the calm personality, the one well-versed in the Vēdas, the one wearing the form of Brahma, the Creator, the destroyer of enemies, the one very capable in work, the one with an eye on the forehead, the one that is a different form of Lord Śiva, (12)

लंकोद्दिपो महाकायः रणशूरो मित्रप्रभः
वायुवेगी मनोवेगी गरुडस्य समोजवे || 13

The one that burnt down Lanka, the one with a huge body, the one full of velour during war, the one that has unlimited shine, the one fast as the wind, the one as fast as the mind, the one equal to Garuda in speed, (13)

महात्मा विष्णुभक्तश्च भक्ताभीष्ट फलप्रदः
संजीविनी समाहर्ता सच्चिदानंदविग्रहः || 14

The great soul, devotee of Vişņu, the one that bestows the wishes of the devotees, the one that brought the sanjeevinee mount, the very form of truth, knowledge and bliss, (14)

त्रिमूर्ती पुंडरीकाक्षो विश्वजिद्विश्वभावनः
विश्वहर्ता विश्वकर्ता भवदुःखैक भेशजः || 15

The very form of the Trinity (Brahma, Vişņuand Mahēśvara), the one with white lotus like eyes, the one that is victorious over the universe, the very reason for the existence of the universe, the one that takes up the universe (viśvahartā), the one that created the universe (viśvakartā), the only medicine for all the sorrows of the world, (15)

वह्नितेजो म्हाशांतो चंद्रस्य सदृशो भवः
सेतुकर्ता कार्यदक्षो भक्तपोशण तत्परः || 16

The one bright as the fire, the one that is always very calm, the one equivalent to the Moon, the form of Śiva, the one that built the bridge (Rāmasētu), adept at performing deeds, the one always adept at sustaining the devotees, (16)

महयोगी महाधैर्यो महाबल पराक्रमः
अक्षहंता राक्षसघ्नो धूम्राक्षवधकृन्मुने || 17

Oh! Great Sage Mytrēya! And the great yogi, the  very courageous one, the one with lots of courage and power, the killer of demon Akşa, the destroyer of demons, the killer of demon Dhoomrākşa, (17)

ग्रस्तसॉर्यो शास्त्रवेत्ता वायुपुत्रः प्रतापवान्
तपस्वी धर्मनिरतो कालनेमि वधोद्यमः || 18

The one that swallowed the Sun, the one that is adept in all the scriptures (śātras),  the one with great velour, the one rich in power of penance, one who always goes on righteous path, the one that tried killing demon Kālanēmi, (18)

चायाहर्ता दिव्यदेहो पावनः पुण्यकृत्शिवः
लंका भयप्रदो धीरो मुक्ताहार विभूशितः || 19

The one that killed the shadow-grabbing demon, the one with an auspicious body, the purest auspicious one, the holy one, the one that commits good deeds, the one with an auspicious form, the frightener of Lanka, the one rich in courage, the one adorned with pearl chains, (19)

मुक्तिदो भुक्तिदश्चैव शक्तिद श्शमकरेति च
हरि र्निरंजनो नित्यो सर्वपुण्य फलप्रदः || 20

The one that bestows liberation, the one that bestows devotion, the one that bestows power, the onethat exerts physically, the very form of Hari, the one without blemishes, the one that always exists, the one that gives the fruits of all good deeds’. (20)

इतीदं श्रीहरेः पुण्य नामाष्टोत्तरं शतं
पठनात् शवणा स्मर्त्यः जीवन्न्मुक्तो भवे द्ध्वम् || 21

These are the 108 names (aşţōttarasatanāmas) of Lord Hanumān. By reciting and even listening the same one attains liberation. (21)

Thus ends the 75th Chapter “The 108-Poem Hanumān Laudatory Hymn”
