79th Chapter (Ēkōnāśeetih Paţalah)

“The Story of the Hanumān Stōtram NameForm”

(HanumatstōtraRoopanāmaKathanam)

श्रीपराशरः
अन्यं विशेषं वक्ष्यामि शृणुष्व मुनिपुंगव
पार्वत्यै शंकरेणोक्तं मत्रं तु सुमहाद्भुतम् || 1

Śree Parāśara:

“Oh! Best amongst the Seers! I am telling about another most special and wonderful mantra told long time back by Śankara to Pārvatee about Hanumān. (1)

हनुमत्संहितायां च मंत्रराज विदं शुभम्
प्रतापहनुमन्माला मनुः प्रकटपराक्रमः || 2

Ēśwara:

Oh! Parvatee! I am telling about another special and wonderful mantra, that is the king of all the Hanumān mantras, the best and auspicious. Listen. That is the one Hanumanmālā (connected or chained or stringed) mantra (a series of mantras with common direction of appeal), that has clear power. (2)

योजपेच्चा इमं मंत्रं भक्त्या शुद्देंद्रिय श्शुचिः
तस्या निलात्मजो नित्यं पुत्रव द्दृश्यते धृवम् || 3

Whoever recites it with devotion, a clean mind and with regard to śauca (purity) will definitely be looked after like a son by Hanumān. (3)

मातृकाबिंदुसहिता अनुलोम विलोमिका
वर्गाष्टक सुस्ंयुक्ता अष्टोत्तर श्ताख़्यका || 4

Referred to as an inclusive of mātrikābindu (see below) and having straight (anulōma) and inverse (vilōma) patterns of the eight groups of consonants (all collectively) known as aşţōttaram (108 names of the Lord). (4)

अक्षमाला जपविधौ म्ंत्राणां क्षिप्रसिद्धिदा
कवचं मूलमंत्र च संस्तवं मंगळात्मकम् || 5

Mātrikā represent the inherent sound vibration of each akşara (letter) or indelible sound vibration contained within the letters which make up words and language. Mantra is the source of matrika, or creative energy. In fact, they are so closely linked that another name for mantra is matrika.

The mantras result in achievement right away when recited as per the alphabets (akşaramālā). It is an auspicious laudatory hymn (stōtra) with a guard (kavaca) and a root (moolā) mantra. (5)

यंत्र मेत त्समायुक्तं त्रिलोका नपि साधयेत्
नातः परतर किंचित् मंत्रसिद्दिषु सस्यते || 6

The amulet (yantra) with the guard (kavaca) and others can achieve the three worlds. There is nothing else better than this in achieving the benefits of the mantra. (6)

रोगोपशमनॉ शत्रुक्षय वादजयंकरं
अनेन मंत्ररजेन शीघ्रं मर्थ्यो विजेयते || 7

Man gets success right away by this mantra that is capable of removing diseases and gave victory over enemies and victory in debates. (7)

विष्णुभक्त स्तु यो मरर्त्यो जपेन्म्ंत्र मनुत्तमं
मोक्षाविज्ञानसिद्दिस्तु तस्य हस्ततले स्थिता || 8

Whichever individual that is a Vişņu devotee recites this best mantra, he achieves liberation (mōkşasiddhi) very easily. (8)

भहुनात्र कि मुक्तेन शृणु ष्वैक मनुत्तमं
सर्वसौभाग्यदं भद्रं भक्तानां शृणु पार्वति || 9

Why so many words? Listen attentively. Oh! Pārvatee! This mantra gives every good fortune. It is auspicious. (9)

अज्ञानहारि देवेश चंद्रशेखर शंकर
स्तोत्ररूपाणि नामानि हर मे ब्रूहि विस्तरात् || 10

Pārvatee:

Oh! Lord of Lords! The remover of ignorance (lack of knowledge)! One wearing the Moon in the hair! Śankara! Harā! Tell me the form of the stōtra in detail. (10)

ईश्वरः
शृणु हैमावती दुर्गे जगन्मात र्ममप्रिये || 11

Ēśwarah:

Oh! Daughter of the Himalāyas! Wisest woman in the world! My dear lady Listen to the names (nāmāni). (11)

आंजनेयाय वीराय शिवाय विपुलौजसे
रम्य देहायघोराय मर्कटाय महात्मने || 12

A bow to Āńjanēya (Hanumān), the warrior, the one with a beautiful body, the one with a ferocious form, the monkey form and the great soul. (12)

रामदूताय दैत्य्रि वर्धनाय नमो नमः
वायुपुत्राय ज्वलाय नमः कालग्नि रुद्राय || 13

A bow to the emissary of Rāma and protector of the Gods. A bow to the son of the Wind God, the fiery form and the Rudra of fiery times. (13)

वालिने च नमस्तुभ्यं कुमार ब्रह्मचारिणे
चलत्कुंडल गंडाय दम्डिताया शिवाय च || 14

A bow to the one having a tail, celibate one since birth, the one with movable muscles in the cheeks and to the remover of inauspiciousness. (14)

पुंडरीक निभेक्षाय रामभक्ताय ते नमः
अरूपाय सुरूपाय अणुरूपाय ते नमः || 15

I bow you the devotee of Rāma, which has eyes similar to white lotuses. I bow to you the one with no form and the one with a micro form.(15)

विरूपाय सरूपाय कामरूपाय ते नमः
महद्रूपाय शक्तये नक्तंच र हराय च || 16

I bow to you the one with no form, with a form, the one with desired form (kāmaroopa), the one with a great form, the one with the form of power and destroyer of the demons. (16)

भुक्ति मुक्ति प्रदा याशु मुक्तदोषाय ते नमः
वज्ररूपाय देवाय वालास्त्राय तु ते नमः || 17

I bow to you who bestow provision (bhukti) and liberation (mukti), the one that removes mistakes fast, the one with a diamond hard form, to the God and the one with tail as the main weapon. (17)

वज्रदंष्ट्राय रौद्राय नमो रुद्रसुताय च
ब्रह्मतेजाय तेजाय भविष्यद्ब्रह्मणे नमः || 18

I bow to you the one with diamond hard canine teeth, the one with a ferocious form, to the son of Śiva, one with the radiance of Brahma, to the form with brightness and to the future Brahma. (18)

नमो दोर्दंड चंडाय ब्रह्मास्त्र स्तंभनाय च
सीतादुःह विनाशाय सुग्रीव सचिवाय च || 19

I bow to you the one with mighty arms, the one that can stop the most powerful Brahmāstra, the remover of the sorrow of Seetā and to the minster of Sugreeva. (19)

पंचवक्त्राय आक्रांत लोकलोकाय ते नमः
नम स्त्रिमूर्तिरूपाय नमोब्दिंलंघनाय च || 20

I bow to the Five Faced one, the one kind to the occupied lands, the form of the Trinity and the one that crossed the ocean flying. (20)

रामपादांबुज क्रीडा सक्त मानसवृत्तये
स्वर्णवर्णाय पूर्णाय पूर्णचंद्र निभाय च || 21

I bow to you who has a tendency to play at the feet of Lord Rāma, one that has a golden hue, the one with complete form and the one equal to a full-moon. (21)

अज्ञानार्णव नावाय आपदुद्दारकाय च
कबळिकृतमित्राय कल्यान गुणशालिने || 22

I bow to you who is like a boat in the ocean of ignorance, the protector during dangers, the one that gobbled up the Sun and the one with auspicious features. (22)

भक्त्यानुरक्त चित्तय भवरोग हराय च
भोग भाग्य प्रदायाध रामदासाय ते नमः || 23

I bow to you who has a vitality that is fortified by devotion, the one that cuts the worldly bindings, the one that gives enjoyment of riches and the server of Lord Rāma. (23)

सुदूरीकृत दौष्ट्याय त्रैलोक्यगीत कीर्तये
नमः कृपासेवधये चातुरीनिघये नमः || 24

I bow to you who distances the ills, the one praised in the three worlds, the one full of kindness the one that is a treasure trove of dexterity. (24)

पार्थद्वध्वज निवासाय प्रार्थिताखिललोकिने
भक्त्युद्यान वसंताय शत्रुदाव दहाय च || 25

I bow to you who is resident on the flag of Arjuna(during the Mahābhārata war), the one worshipped by all the worlds, the spring in the garden of devotion and the one that forest fire like for the enemies. (25)

अक्षराय अनंताय अच्युता यारिहारिणे
दशकंठ महादर्प दळनाय नमो नमः || 26

I bow to you who is the one with no destruction, the one without an end, the one with no defeats and the one that dented the pride of Rāvaņa. (26)

मुद्रापहारिणे तुभ्यं रामाज्ञकारिणे नम्ः
लंकापुरी विदाहाय लंकिणी भंजनाय च || 27

I bow to you who took the signet ring of Rāma (to Seetā), the one that performed the command of Rāma, the one that burnt down the Lanka city and the one that killed demon Lankiņi. (27)

लंकालंकार संहर्त्रे शीमहाकपये नमः
चर्मकौपीन वासाय लस न्मौंजीधराय च || 28

I bow to you who killed Lankiņi the ornament of Lanka, to the great one in monkey form, the one that wears a loin cloth (undergarment) made of leather and to the wearer of a rope girdle made of munja grass. (28)

रामपादाब्ज भृंगय पिंगाक्षाय तु ते नमः
लस द्यज्ञोपवीताय कुंडलालंकृताय च || 29

I bow to you who meanders around the lotus feet of Rāma like a beetle, the one with golden coloured eyes, the one with a shining sacred thread and the one bedecked with ear hangings. (29)

तुलसीदळ दामाय तुंगोत्तुंग भुजाय च
नखायुधाय धीराय नव्यतेजाय ते नमः || 30

I bow to you who wears a garland of basil leaves, who has rising shoulders, who has nails as weapons, the courageous one and the one with fresh radiance. (30)

मंदारसुम दामाय नम स्सुंदरमूर्तये
विष्णुभक्ताय श्रेष्टाय ब्रह्मज्ञानिनि योगिने || 31

I bow to you who wears a garland of hibiscus flowers, the handsome Vişņu devotee, the best one, the one knowledgeable about the Supreme Being and the yōgi. (31)

त्यागिने रागिणे तुभ्यं रम्यदेहाय ते नमः
अंगदाय नमस्तुभ्यं संगराहिते हारिणे || 32

I bow to you who sacrificed self, the affectionate one, the oen with a beautiful body, the one with shoulders and the one that won over enemies in war. (32)

दिव्यमंगळ देहाय मंगळाकारिणे नमः
शत्रुमांगळ्य संहर्त्रे सुग्रीवाय नमो नम्ः
नमः प्ववगरूपाय श्रीरामप्रिये ते नमः || 33

I bow to you who has a grand auspicious body, auspicious form, grabber of auspicious chains (māgaļya) of the wives of enemies (means kills them). The one with a beautiful neck, one in a monkey form and a dear one to Lord Rāma. (33)

इत्यष्टोत्तर नामानि यः पठे द्भक्तिभाविअतः
स पुमान् श्रिय माप्नोति पुरुषार्थं चर्विधम् || 34

Phalaśruti – Impact

Whoever recites this aşţōttaraśātanāmās (108 names) with devotion they will gain wealth and the four life goals (puruşārtha). (34)

ईव्य त्लुंडल कर्ण मंडित लस द्गंडं हरिं वायुजं
चंडांशु प्रतिभासमान रुचिरं शत्रुप्रहारं सदा
नानारत्न विभूषितोज्ज्वल महा मुक्तासरैर्भूषितं
ध्यायेत् श्रीरघुराम दूत मनिशं शांतं हनूमत्प्रभुम् || 35

Dhyānam

One has to meditate upon Hanumān,  whose shoulder region is resplendent with the shining ear hangings worn, the one in monkey form, son of the Wind God, one that radiates light in bright rays, one that destroyes the enemies, the one who wears a pearl necklace studded with diamonds, the calm formed one and the emissary of Lord Rāma. (35)

दिव्य यज्ञोपवीताढ्य रत्नकुंडल मंडितं
लस न्मौंजीयुतं देवं हेमकौपीन धारिणम् || 36

With an auspicious sacred thread, one shining with bright ear hangings, the God that wears a bright girdle around the waist made of munja grass, the wearer of golden hued inner garment (loin cloth), (36)

अंजनातनयं धीरं वायुपुतं समुज्ज्वलं
रामदूतं च रुद्रांशं केसरी प्रियनंदनम् || 37

The son of Ańjana, the courageous, the son of the Wind God, the radiant one, the server of Lord Rāma, the one born out of Rudra’s essence, the dear son of Kēśri, (37)

अक्षघ्नामित तेजाड्यं यक्ष राक्षस संहरम्
द्क्ष मिंदीवराक्षं च रामदूतं नमाम्यहम् || 38

The one that killed demon Akşa, the one with unending brilliance, the one that killed yakşas and demons, the capable one, the one with eyes like bees; such emissary of Rāma, I bow to. (38)

वालग्रेण निबद्ध राक्षसचमूं वाक्येन रामप्रभुं
भक्ता नक्षय भोग भाग्य पुर्षार्थ प्राप कशीःपदैः
ध्यायंतं तव दासदास मनिशं मां रक्षेति रक्षेति च
ध्ययेत्तं रघुवीरभक्त मभयं चिद्रूपिणं मारुतिम् || 39

One has to meditate upon Hanumān the one that binds the demons with the tip of his tail, Rāma with his words and the devotees by gracing with unending four puruşārdhas, riches and wellbeing; the one that meditates upon Rāma as a server of servers (dāsadāsa) and prays seeking protection; the devotee of Raghuveera, the protector and the very form of knowledge. (39)

कश्चि द्रामस्य भृत्युः कपिकुलप्रवरः कश्चि दाड्यश्च वीरः
कश्चि त्पुत्र श्च दूतः जलरुहनयनः कश्चि दापत्शु मंत्री
एवं नित्यं सुसत्ये सकलविचरतः सत्यवादी सुवादी
वाली माली सुपाली परमभयकरो वानरः पातु न स्सः || 40

Let Hanumān protect us, a devoted servant of Rāma, best in the monkey clan, the great one, the valorous one, son of the Wind God, emissary of Rāma, the one with lotus like eyes, the one that performs statesmanship during dangers, the one that always speaks and follows truth, the one skilled in debates, the one that has a tail and wears a chain and the most ferocious one! (40)

इति स्तुत्वा हनूमंतं पूजा कुर्या त्प्रयत्नतः
स एव व्रजते काम्यान् नात्र कार्या विचारणा || 41

After praising Hanumān, whoever worships ritualistically, will get his desires fulfilled. There is no doubt at all in this. (41)

इति श्रीपराशरसंहितायां पराशर मैत्रेय संवादे हनुमत् स्तोत्ररूप नाम कथनं नाम एकोनाशीति पटलः

Thus ends the 79th Chapter “The Story of the HanumānStōtram NameForm”
