“The Story of the Impact of the Hanumān Armour”
(Kavaca Yantra Prabhāva Kathanam)
श्रीपराशर
पार्वत्यै शंकरेणोक्तं कवचं तु महद्दितं
आत्यादरेण विप्रेंद्र प्रोक्तं लोकहिताय वै || 1
Śree Parāśara:
“Oh! Mytrēya! Long time back, Śankara told Pārvatee affectionately about the Hanumān armour, for the welfare of the whole world. (1)
पार्वत्युवाच
देव देव जगन्नथ सर्वभूत वश्ंकर
केन रक्षा भवे न्न्रूणां भीतानां विवि धापदैः || 2
Pārvatee:
‘Protector of the worlds! The one that has all the elements (bhoota) under control! Let me know what keeps protecting all the people from fear of dangers. (2)
मंगळं च महापुण्यं पवित्रं पापनाशनं
श्रोतु मिच्छामि देवेश वद मे करुणाकर || 3
Oh! Lord of Lords! I want to hear that the auspicious, one that bestows good deeds, holy one and remover of sins.’ (3)
श्रुणुगुह्यातमं गौरि गोपनीयं प्रयत्नतः || 4
‘Oh! Lady (dēvi)! I am telling about the (Hanumān) armour that destroys all the maladies of the devotees and the secret one. Listen.’ (4)
सर्वसंपत्करं गौरि गोपनीयं प्रयत्नतः || 5
This Hanumān armour amulet bestows all riches. And it is secret. (5)
मदंशजो महातेजा महाबल पराक्रमः
सुभग स्सुंदर श्शूरः शंकरो भक्तवत्सलः 6
Hanumān is the most powerful one born from my own micro form (amśa). He has great strength and courage. He is fortunate, beautiful, valorous, provider of auspiciousness and considerate to devotees. (6)
विजयो विष्णुभक्थाड्यो रामदूतः कपीश्वरः
एवं प्लवंगरूपेण जातोहं शृणु पार्वति || 7
He is victorious, best amongst Vişņu devotees, emissary of Rāma and best amongst the monkeys, Oh! Pārvatee! Thus, I was born in the form of a monkey. (7)
अजोहं लोकरक्षणार्थं रामदूतोस्मि चादरात्
वक्ष्यामितस्य कवचं सादरेण प्रिये शृण || 8
I, the one without birth, became the emissary of Rāma willingly. I am telling about Hanumān armour (kavaca). Listen attentively.’ (8)
प्रात स्स्नात्वा तु विधिना वस्त्राभरण भूषितः
प्रक्षाळ्य तस्य कवचं सादरेण प्रिये शृणु || 9
Having performed the morning ritualistic bath, putting on fresh clothes and ornaments, washing feet and others, after sipping water (ācamana), wearing sandal paste, vertical forehead marks (ūrdhvapundra). (9)
योगबूमिं प्रवि श्याथतां स्ंप्रोक्ष्य च विन्यसेत्स
आसनं कल्पये त्प्राज्ञः सम्ध्यावंदन माचरेत् || 10
Reaching the worship place, sprinkling water on it, having arranged a seat, one has to perform the daily salutations to the twilight (sandhyāvandana). (10)
गायत्रीं प्रजपेत् धीमान् पाणयाम त्रयं चरेत्
कृतस्वांग करन्यासो मंत्राभ्यां वाग्यतः शुचिः || 11
Reciting the Gāyatree mantra, one has to perform deep breathing (prāņāyām). With clear diction the body touching (ańganyāsa) and hand gesticulations (karanyāsa) are to be performed. (11)
दैवभूतादि कर्मेभ्यो आंजनेयमयः पुमान्
पादयोर्जानुनो रूर्वो रुदरे हृदि कंधरे
मुखे शिर स्यानुपूर्व्या मोंकारादीनि विन्यसेत् || 12
Thinking of Hanumān via this worldly (laukika) and other worldly (alaukika) deeds, saying out Ōm and other sacred letters, the yogic coordinations have to be performed in the feet, the calves, the thighs, the belly, the heart, the neck, the face and the head. (12)
ओम नमो रमदुता येति विपर्यय मथापि वा
करन्यासो बुधः कुर्यात द्वादक्षर विद्यया || 13
With the sacred words ‘Ōm namō Rāma dootāya’ or the 12-Lettered mantra the hand gesticulations are to be performed. (13)
प्रणवादि यकारांतं अंगुळ्यंगुष्ठ पर्वसु
न्यसेद्दकारं हृदये सुकार मनु मूर्थनि || 14
The body touching nyāsa has to be performed starting with the letter ‘Ōm’ till ‘ya’ for the fingers till the thumbs, with the letter ‘a’ for the heart, ‘nu’ for the head. (14)
शिखायां तु मकारं च तेकारं भुजये रपि
नकारं नेत्रये र्युंज्य मकारं स्वास्त्रमुद्दिशेत् || 15
It has to be performed for the top of the hair tuft (open or knotted; śikha) with ‘ma’, with ‘tē’ for the shoulders, ‘na’ for the eyes and ‘ma’ for the magical weapons. (15)
सविसर्गं पठेन्नित्यं सर्वदिक्षु विनिर्थिशेत्
मंत्रं न्यासं ततः कृत्वा ध्यये द्बक्त्या सुबुद्धिमान् || 16
Always the cardinal directions are to be indicated by performing gesticulations (nyāsa). After performing the nyāsa of the mantra, meditation has to be performed with devotion.

बालार्कसन्निभं देवं दिव्यकौपीनम्मुज्ज्वलं
दिव्य मौंजीधरं शांतं दिव्यकुंडल धारिणं
दिव्ययज्ञोपवीताढ्यं दिव्याभरण भूषितं
किंकिणी कटुसूत्रांच केयूरं वनमालिनं
रुद्रावतारं सेनाढ्यं अंजनागर्भ संभवं
भक्तानां भयहर्तारं रामदूतं नमाम्यहम्
इति स्त्रुत्वा हनूमंतं निश्चलः कवचं पठेत् || 17
Meditation – Dhyānam
The hymns of the kavaca (protective gear) has to be recited after bowing to Hanumān, the one possessing the brightness of the rising Sun, the one with an auspicious undergarment (protecting the genitals), the one wearing a girdle made of munja grass (whose tenacious culms are used for making ropes), one with a peaceful form, one who wears auspicious ear hangings, sacred thread (yagńyopaveetam) and a loin cord studded with jingling bells, one wearing a garland of forest flowers, the incarnation of Lord Śiva, one with lots of inclination for service, the one with a great army, the one born to Ańjana, the one that removes the fears of devotees, and the emissary of Rāma. कवच प्रारंभ्ः -आस्यश्री कवचस्तोत्र मंत्रस्य ईश्वर रुषिः| अनुष्टुप्छंदः श्री हनुमान् देवता| मारुतात्मज इति बीजं| अंजना सूनु रिति शक्तिः| रुद्रावतार इति कीलकं| श्री हनुमर्प्रसाद सिद्ध्यर्थे जपे विनियोगः||

ओम नमो रामदूताय| अष्टाक्षराय|
हनुमते नमः षडक्षरोयं|
दिश मैंद्री मवतु मे अंजनाप्रियनंदनः|
दिशमैंद्री मवतु मे अंजनाप्रियनंदनः
दिशमवतु आग्नेय्यां लंकाप्रासाद भंजनः|
याम्यां शि रक्षतु मे केसरी प्रियनंदनः
नैरुतीं दिश मक्षघ्नः पातु मे प्लवगाधिपः
पातुश्री वायुपुत्रो मे वारुणीं दिस्श मव्ययः
सुग्रीवसचिवो नित्यं पातु मे वायुवीं दिशं
रुद्रावतारोवतु मे ईशान्यं दिश मव्ययः
अध्स्तात्पातु मे नित्यं वालास्त्रो वरदो हरिः
ऊर्थ्वंदिशि रक्षतु मे शंकरोमितविक्रमःं
आंतरिक्षं दिशं पातु नीतिज्ञो मे महाकपिः
बाह्याभ्यंत र्दिशौ पातु पिंगाक्षो मेलभ्दिंघनः
सुशिरो मे शिरः पातु फालं मे पातु पावनिः
दृशौ मे पातु सुडृशो कर्णौ पातु सुकर्णवान्
सघ्राणः पातु घ्राणं मे मुखं तु प्लवगाननः
सुजिह्वः पातु जिह्वां मे कंठं पातु सुकंधरः
सुस्कंधः पातु मे स्कंधो सुभुजोवतु मे
भुजौ सुकरो मे करौपातु हृदयं सुहृदो मम

संकटे विषमे दुर्गे भये पारे महाहावे
निशायां संध्ययोः पातु हनुमान् सर्वतस्सदा
जले ह्यग्नौ स्थिते चैव वायव्यं च गुहांतरे
नद्यां शैले च पिविप्ने दवाग्नौ चोर संकटे
राजद्वारे सभास्थाने शत्रुद्वारे च कृत्रिमे
पातु श्रीरामदूतोसौ सदा मां भक्तवत्सलः
सर्प वृश्चिक लूतादि विषेभ्यः पातु मां सदा
स्थावरं जंगमं चैव कृत्रिमंश्च हरीश्वरः
नर वानर सिंहेभ तरुक्षु व्याघ्रभुल्लुकात्
ह्रिंस्राद्वन चरआध्वक्षा द्रक्षो गंधर्व किन्नरात्
भूतप्रेत गणाश्चैव पिशाच ब्रह्मराक्षसात्
भेतळ दनुजा त्पातु सीताशोक विनाशनः
दुस्स्वप्ना त्सलित्पातु दुष्क्रुता द्दुःखसंकुतात्
अज्ञानालात्कर्मलो पाच्च पातु मां ब्रहम पावनिः
परदारा त्परद्रव्या त्परदान परिग्रहातु
परचिंता परध्यान परव्याधि भयाच्चमां
पातु प्रचंडदोर्दंड आंजनेयो महाबलः
कर्मलोपा त्क्रियालोपा द्बुद्दि जद्या च्च चंचलात्
आयुधा त्कदना दस्त्रा त्कारागारा च्च शृंखलात्
ताडना दौषधान्ंत्रा त्पातु मां ब्रह्म पावनिः
फलशृति
हनुमत्कवचं पुण्यं सर्वसिद्दिकरं परं
मृताना ममृतत्वाय भीतानां चतु भीतये
मोक्षाय च मुमुक्षूणां श्रीकमानां श्रिये तथा
विजयाय जिगीषुणां व्यधिताना मरोगकृत्
वश्याय वश्यकमानं विद्यायै वेदवादिनां
द्रविणाय दरिद्राणां पापानां पापशंतये
वादिनां वदविजयं कवीनां कविताप्र्दं
अन्नाय क्षुदितार्तानां स्वर्गाय स्वर्ग मिच्चतां
पशुदं पशुकामानां पुत्रेभ्यः पुत्रकामिनां
दारेभ्यो कृतदाराणां ज्ञानाय ज्ञान मिच्चतां
रज्याय भ्रष्ट राज्यानां अशांतानां च शांताये
अमृत्यवे मृत्युभिया मायुष्यं चायु रिच्चतां
शत्रुक्षये शत्रुमता मन्वर्थाय च योगिनां
भर्तृवश्याय च श्त्रीणां स्त्रीवश्याय नृणा मपि
राजवश्याय कवचं राजसन्निधि सेविनां
भक्त्यर्थं विष्णुभक्तानां विष्णौ सर्वांतरात्मनि
विनायको विसृस्टानां शांतये भवति धृवं
जप्तु स्त्रिवर्गसिद्ध्यर्थं मोक्षाय परमाय च
उद्यंतां चंडकिरणं उपस्ठाय कृतांजलिः
कदळीकानने तिष्टन्नासीनो वा जपन् दिवा
सर्वान्कामा नवप्नोति अनेनैव जपप्रिये ||
मम पीत्रिकरं दिव्यं विष्णुभक्ति विवर्धनं
ज्वरार्तानां कुशाग्रेण मार्जये त्कुष्टरोगिणां
अंगमंगं यथालिंगं कवचेन तु साधकः || 18
Kavacha Prārambhah (the beginning)
The kavcha has Ēśwaraas the ŗşi(sage), anuşţup as the meter, Hanumān as the God, Mātitātmaja(son of Wind God) as the seed letter, Ańjanāsoomuhas the power, Rudrāvatāra as the key and the utility being the benevolence of Lord Hanumān.

| Paradārāparadravyā – tparadānaparigrahāt, | From grabbing wife of others, money of others and a sacred gift given to others, |
| Paracintāparadhyāna – paravyādhibhayāccamām, | And, from thoughts about others, inattentiveness and fear of diseases of others, |
| PātupracandadōrdhandaĀńjanēyōmahābalah. | Protect me Oh! Hanumān, the mighty, the one severe and firm. |
| Karmalōpātkriyālopā – dbuddhijādyāccacancalāt, | From missing fate, non-action, mental perversion and vacillating nature, |
| Āyudhātkdanādastrātkārāgārāccaśŗnkhalāt | From weapons, wars, weapons, jail and binds, |
| Tādānādauşsdānmantrā – tpātumāmPāvanih. | From getting beaten up, medicines and mantras; protect me Oh! Pure one. |
Phalaśtuti – Benefits
This auspicious Hanumatkavaca bestows everything. It gives long live (amŗtatva) to those fearing death, absence of fear (abode of safety) to those that get frightened, liberation (mōkşa) to those desiring it, wealth to the those desiring the same, victory to those seeking it, health to the diseased, control over others for those seeking it, knowledge (vidya) to the learners, wealth to destitute, peace to the sinners, victory in debates to those playing carrying out debates, mastery in poetry to the poets, food to the hungry, place in heaven to the seekers, livestock wealth to the livestock farmers, sons to those desiring sons, matching wife to those wishing marriage, knowledge to the knowledge seekers, kingdom to the losers of kingdom, peace to the disturbed minds, longevity to those fearing death, long life and health to those seeking them, destruction of enemies to those troubled by enemies, fulfilment of striving to the yogis, control over husbands to women, control over wives to men, ear to the king to those serving him, Vişņu’s benevolence to his devotees, peace to the wanderers and silence (mauna) to the munis (seers). All the fruits of this kavaca can be achieved, if one recites in front of the rising sun, sitting or standing.
This kavaca is dear to me, auspicious and increases devotion to Vişņu. For those suffering with fever, water sanctified with this mantra has to be sprinkled on the head with kuśa grass. For those suffering with leprosy, similarly, the sacred water has to be sprinkled on the affected organs by the practitioner. (18)
या स्या न्मृतप्रजायुक्ता तस्या मंगं प्रमार्जयेत्
सा पुत्रं लभते दीर्घ जीविनं चा प्यरोगिणं || 19
If the organ of the women, whose infants have been dying, is sprinkled with such sanctified water, she will become healthy and will give birth to sons with long life. (19)
वंध्याय मार्जये दंगं कुशैर्म्ंत्रेण साधकः
सा वै संत्सरा दर्वा ग्गर्भं धत्ते मनोहरम् || 20
If a practitioner similarly sprinkles such sanctified water on the organ of a sterile woman, she will grandly conceive within a year. (20)
पतिविद्वेषिणी या तु तस्या अंगं प्रमार्जयेत्
सा तमेव भजे त्प्रीत्या भर्तार्ं नान्यमानसा || 21
If similar sprinkling is done on the organ of a woman not interested in her husband, she will soon forget other men and will live happily with her own husband. (21)
अश्वत्थे राजवश्यार्थी जलमग्नो महदिच्चतां
पालाशमूले विध्यार्थी तेजसेभिमुखे रवेः || 22
The kavaca has to be recited by those seeking control of kingdoms by standing under an Indian fig tree (aśvattha), those seeking greatness – standing in water, those seeking knowledge – while standing under a wild teak (Butcafrondosa) tree, those seeking brightness – while standing opposite to the Sun. (22)
कन्यार्थी च्ंडिकागेहे शिवगेहे रिपुक्षयं
श्रीकमो विष्णुगेहे च मोक्षार्थी यत्रकुत्र च
किमत्र बहुनोक्तेन सर्वान्कामा नवाप्नुयात् || 23
The kavaca has to be inside a Pārvatee temple recited by one seeking a bride, by one seeking destruction of the enemies – inside a Śiva temple, one seeking wealth – inside a Vişņu temple, and a seeker of liberation (mōkşa) from anywhere. Why to tell so much? One can get all the desires fulfilled by this kavaca. (23)
अन्य च्च कवचं वक्ष्ये शृणु शैलसुते प्रियेु
गुह्याद्गुह्यतमं लोके मंगळानां च मंगळम् || 24
Oh! Dear Pārvatee! I am telling about another kavaca (armour). Listen. This is highly secretive. It is the most auspicious of the auspicious ones. (24)
कवचप्रारंभः
हनुमान् पातु मे नित्यं शिवक्त्रोष्ठ नाशिकाः
कर्णौ स्कंधौ भुजौ वक्षौ रामेष्टः पातु कक्षकौ
पृष्ठं च जठरं सर्वं स्तनौ जट्रु च हृत्कटिं
हरिः पा तूदरं नाभिं पार्श्वं हस्तांगुळी स्तथा
जाठरं वह्निस्थानं तु गंडं जघन गुह्यकं
पावनिः पातु मे नित्यं ऊरुयुग्मं सजानुकं
अंजनासूनु मे पातु जंघे पदौ च सर्वदा
युदुक्तं यच्च नोक्तं मे यद्भाह्ये यत्तदंतरं
सर्वांगं पातु मे शूरो लक्ष्मण प्राणदायकः || 25
KavacaPrārambhah
May Hanumān always protect my head, face, lips and nose; ears; Oh! Dear one to Rāmaprotect my shoulders, arms, chest and axilla. Oh! Hari (also meaning ape) protect my back, the whole of the belly, the breasts, the collar bones, heart andwaist; Oh! Pure One! Protect all my gastric fires (jaţharagni), the posterior, the pubic area and the secret parts; the thighs along with the knees. Oh! Son of ńjana! Always protect my knees and feet, the told and the untold, the outside and the inside; protect all my organs, Oh! The valorous one that gifted life back to Lakşmaņa! (25)
य इद्ं कवचं दिव्यं आंजनेयस्य कामदं
ध्याये ज्जपे द्भजे त्तस्य शी विद्यायश्च वर्धते || 26
Whoever meditates or recites or sings this auspicious wish-fulfilling Hanumān kavaca, that one will get wealth, knowledge and long life. (26)

प्राची ष्षड्भि र्लिखे द्रेखो दीची ष्त्च तथा क्रमं
सपंचविंशति स्तत्र कोष्ठानां तु भविष्यति
कोष्ठे कोष्ठे अयं मंत्रो साक्षराणि यथाक्तमं || 27

One has to draw six lines from the east and, on them, six lines from the north. Then 25 squares form. In each of the squares, words of this mantra have to be written the letters, one in each square, in orderly manner. (27)
ग्रंथांतरे
उदगग्रा लिखे द्रेखाः स्थानं मूलं तु दक्षिणं
प्रागग्रा श्च लिखे द्रेखाः स्थानं मूलं तु पश्चिमं
प्रागग्र मुदगग्रं च समार्भ्य लिखे द्भुधः
रेखापदेषु विलिखे त्कवचस्स्य पदं पदं || 28
There is another version that says – One has to draw lines first in such a way that their bases are in the south and ends the north. Similarly to be drawn are lines with bases in the west and ends in the east. In the resultant squares, the words of the kavaca are to be written, in an orderly manner, in such a way that they end in the east and north. (28)
सौवर्णे रजते ताम्रे ताळपर्णेपि वा मुने
भूर्जे रोचनया विद्वान् सोपि कुंकुम मिश्रया || 29
Oh! Mytrēya! The mantra adept person has to write with saffron (kunkuma) mixed paste of gorōcana (auspicious yellow pigment found in the gall of bovines). (29)
यस्त्रु यंत्र मिदं मूर्ध्निस्थितं कंठे तु धारयेत्
संग्रामे व्यवहारे च चोर व्याघ्र भयेषु च
मारीभये विषभये महाद्भुत प्रपिडने || 30
Whoever wears this great armour in the neck will be free of fear of war, affair, thieves, tigers, malady, poison, heavy rain and strange changes in the air pressure and others. (30)
क्षयापस्मार पीडासु सर्प वृश्चिक लूतके
तापने तु तथा शोके नेत्ररोगे च दुस्सहे || 31
In kşaya (tuberculosis), swooning and other maladies; poisons of snake, scorpion or spider like creatures; in burns, in sadness, in unbearable eye problems (worldly troubles), (31)
नानाविह भये ष्वेव नानाव्याधि प्र्पीडने
विन्यस्य कवचं यस्तु मंत्ररजेन मंत्रितम्
नतस्य दुरितं किंचि दिह चामुत्र चैव हि || 32
In all types of fears, in pain of all types of diseases; no mundane and other worldly sin accrues, to whoever wears the kavaca fortified mantra. (32)
वंध्यया धारये द्यंत्रं अचिरा त्पुत्रिणी भवेत्
क्षुद्रसिद्ध्यै ततो न्यस्यै यस्तु प्रार्थयतेल्पधीः
पिपासतो सविहितो मृगतृष्णां पिपासति || 33
If a sterile woman wears it, she will soon bear a son. If anyone practices it for acquiring evil forces and other such achievements, that one will become a very thirsty one in a mirage. (33)
वश्याकर्शण विद्वेष स्तंभो नोच्चाटनादिषु
कृत्वा तु कवचं न्यासं जपेन्म्ंत्र मनुत्तमम् || 34
A noble mantra has to be recited after nyāsa for the kavaca, if the same is used for purposes like obtaining control over others, attracting others, hating others, freezing others or causing difference between people. (34)
तथैव सर्व माप्नोति नात्र कार्या विचारणा || 35
Every desired thing can be achieved in this manner. There is no doubt in this. (35)
श्लोके श्लोके प्रकुर्वीत होमं तर्पण मेवच || 36
Tarpańa (water offering) andhōma (fire sacrifice) have to be paerformed for every hymn (slōka) of the kavaca. (36)
नवरात्रौ पठे द्विद्वा नेकोत्तर विधानतः
मल्लिका जाति पुष्पैश्च खर्जूर कदळीफलैः || 37
During navarātri (9 auspicious days; Durgāpooja) it has to be recited 101 times as stipulated. With jasmine and creeper jasmine flowers and fruits like dates, banana, (37)
द्राक्षाफ लेक्षुखंडै र्वा होमं कुर्या द्वचक्षणः
बहुशो सिद्दि माप्नोति फल माप्नो त्यसंशयः || 38
Grapes or pieces of sugarcane; a knowledgeable person performs fire sacrifice. By doing so, one can definitely obtain different achievements (siddhis) and fruits. (38)
एवंऋत पुरश्चर्यो कुबेरसदृशो भवेत्
तर्पणे तर्पयामीति स्वाहांतं च हुने द्भुधः
जयद्वंद्व समायुक्तं होमांते च तथोच्चरेत् || 39
Thus, if it is repeated daily (puraścarya) one becomes rich as Kubēra (Lord of Wealth). The tarpaņahas to be performed uttering the word tarpayāmi and the fire sacrifice, using the word swāhā. The words ‘jayajaya’ have to be said after the fire sacrifice. (39)
