“The108-NameHanumān Laudatory Hymn”

(Hanumadaşōttaraśatanāmastōtram)

श्रीपराशर उवाच
शृणु मैत्रेय! विप्रर्षे स्तोत्रं शी हनुमत्परं
कृतं सर्ववानरैश्च श्री वानरगीताभिदम् || 1

Śrī Paraāśara:

Oh! Knower of mantras! Great sage Mytrēya! Listen! Whoever recites this Hanumānaşţōttaraśatanāmastōtram (108-Name HanumānLaudatory Hymn) will be free from all worries. (1)

स्तोत्रं सर्वॉत्तमंचैव हनुमत्तत्व दर्शनं
सर्वमायाहरंचैव आधि व्याधि विनाशनम् || 2

This stōtram was once told by Lord Śiva to Mother Pārvatee. This, which fulfills all the wishes, has to be kept most secret. (2)

आगस्त्येन पुरा प्रोक्तं सर्वेशां मुनिसन्निधौ
इंद्रेण याचिते नैव लोकोपकरणेच्छया || 3

Know that the seer (ŗşi) for this 108-Name Hanumān Laudatory Hymn is the Eternal Śiva; the meter is anuşţup; Hanumān is the God; the seed letter is hrām; the power śaktiis hreem; the key is hroom. The utility or use (viniyōga) is for the benevolance (prasāda) of Hanumān. (3)

इंद्रोथ परिपप्रच्छ सत्कृतं मुनिपंगव!
आगस्त्यं च महात्मानां आसीनं च सुखासने || 4

Once, after honouring Sage Agastya, Indra requested him, best amongst the seers and the great soul, as he was seated comfortably in the sukhāsana seating posture. (4)

देवदेवभवांभोधेः दुस्तरा त्कलुशेंद्रयाः
जनाः कथं तरं तीह त न्मे वद कृपानिधे || 5

‘Oh! Lord of lords! The one full of compassion! The ocean of life in this mundane world is unfordable. Let me know how people with impure hearts are able to cross it.’ (5)

श्री अगस्त्य उवाच
हनूमंतं कृतं स्तोत्रं वानरै र्विमलात्मभिः
पठन्ति ये सदा मर्त्वाः ताच्चित्ता विमलात्मकाः
तरन्ति भवपदोधिं पाप्प्नुवन्ति हरेः पदम् || 6

Śree Agastya:

All the monkey warriors with sinless hearts created a laudatory song (stōtra addressing Lord Hanumān). People with their pure hearts that recite that stōtra regularly, concentrating on Lord Hanumān, can ford that ocean. They can reach the presence of Lord Hanumān. (6)

आयुः कीर्तिर्यश्श्चैव लभन्ते नात्र संशयः || 7

Such people will gain long life and great fame. There is no doubt in this. (7)

ओंम अस्य श्री वानरगीता स्तोत्र मंत्रसय
अगस्त्य भगवान रुषिः जगतीच्च्ंदः श्री
हनुमान् देवता मारुतात्मज इति बीजं
अंजनासूनु रित शतिः वायुपुत्र इति
कीलकं श्रीहनुमन्त्प्रसाद सिद्ध्यर्थे विनियोगः || 8

Features of Vānarageetā

For this Vānarageetāstōtra mantra, the ŗşi is the seer Agastya, the meter is jagatee, Lord Hanumān is the God, Mārutātmaja is the seed letter, Anjanāsoonuh is the power, Vāyuputra is the key and the utility is the attainment of the benevolance of Lord Hanumān. (8)

ध्यानं
वाये जानुनि वामजाम मपर्ं ज्ञानाख्य मुद्रान्वितं
हृद्देशे कलन्नुतो मुनिगणै रध्यात्मदक्षेक्षणः
आसीनः कदळीवने मणिमये बालार्ककॉटिप्रभः
ध्यायन् ब्रह्म परं करोतु मनसा शुद्धिं ह्नूमन्मनः || 9

Dhyānam

May Lord Hanumān, keeping his left hand on the left knee and the other held ‘kin in ‘knowledge gesture’ (gńānamudra), close to the heart, being praised by the group of seers, the one having a spiritual attitude, the one sitting on precious stone studded seat in the banana grove, the one possessing brightness equal to that of a 10 million rising Suns and remaining in meditation of the Supreme Being, provide me purity of heart. (9)

संजीव पर्वतोध्दार! मनोदुःखं निवारय
प्रसीद सुमहाबाहो त्रयस्व हरिसत्तम || 10

The one that lifted the Sanjeeva Mountain! Remove the sorrow that exists in my soul. Oh! The mightily strong one! Be kind to me. Oh! The best of the monkeys! Protect me. (10)

श्रीसुग्रीवः
सुवर्ण शैलस्य गवां च कोटि
सतस्य कॉटे श्च शतस्य यच्च
दानस्य नै वास्ति समं फलं च
धृवं च त न्मारुति दर्शनेन || 11

Śree Sugreevah:

‘There is nothing in this world that is equal (in giving fruits) to donation of a billion (śatakōţi) cows on the top of the golden mountain. But the auspicious glance at Māruti (Hanumān) gives such a fruit.’ (11)

श्रीगंधमादन
हनुमन्निति मे स्नानं हनुमन्निति मे जपः
हनुमन्निति मे ध्यानं हनुमत्कीर्तनं सदा || 12

Śree Gabdhamādanah:

‘Just saying Hanumān is the holy bath to me. Saying Hanumān is recitation for me. Saying Hanumān is meditation for me. I always need only singing accolades of Hanumān.’ (12)

श्रीसुशेणः
रामभक्ताचरिता कथामृतं
वायुतनय गुणानुकीर्तनं
रामदास! तव पादसेवनं
संभवस्तु मम जन्म जन्मनि || 13

Śree Suşēņah:

‘Oh! The servant of Rāma (Rāmadāsa)! Imbibing the nectar like story of Hanumān, the devotee of Rāma, praising the features of the son of the Wind God and serving at your lotus feet – may accrue to me life after life.’ (13)

श्री अंगदः
माता सुवर्चल्लादेवी पिता मे वायुनंदनः
बांधवा हनुमद्भक्ताः स्वदेशं भुवनत्रयम् || 14

Śree Angadah:

‘Suvarcchalā Dēvi is my mother. My father is Hanumān, the sun of the Wind God. Devotees of Hanumān are my relatives. The dwelling place of Hanumān is the three worlds for me.’ (14)

श्रीनीलः
भक्त कल्पतरुं सौम्यं लोकोत्तर गुणाकरं
सुवर्चलापतिं वंदे मारुतिं वरदं सदा || 15

Śree Neelah:

‘I always bow to Lord Hanumān, who is the Wish-Fulfilling Kalpavŗkşa Tree to the devotees, the very gentle one, the one that has world aclaimed good features, the Lord of Suvarcchalā, the sun of the Wind God, and the one that bestows boons.’ (15)

श्रीववाक्षः
वायुपुत्रेण महता यद्य रुक्तं करोमि तत्
न जानामि ततो धर्मं मद्दर्मं रक्ष मां सदा || 16

Śree Gavākşah:

‘I am bowing to Thee, Oh! Son of Mother Ańjana (Hanumān). I am performing all the tasks given by the great souled son of the Wind God. I know no other righteousness (dharma).’ (16)

श्रीमैंदः
समीरसूते! सततं त्व दाज्ञ्नया
त्व दंशकः प्रेरित मानसेंद्रियः
करो म्यहं य च्च शुबाशुभं प्रभो!
त्व त्प्रीतये मत्कृत मस्तु त त्सदा || 17

Śree Maindah:

‘Oh! Son of the Wind God! By your command, I have your micro part (amśa). I have mind and soul enthused by You. All the good deeds performed by me may become my actions out of love for you, my Lord!’ (17)

श्रीद्विविदः
रामादीनां रणे ख्यातिंदातुं यो रावणादिकान्
नवधेर्त्स्वयमे वैक स्तं वंदे हनुमत्प्रभुम् || 18

Śree Dwividah:

I bow in reverence to Hanumān, who despite being capable himself of destroying Rāvaņa and other demons, did not do so in the war, because he wanted that fame to go to his Lord Rāma. (18)

श्रीशरभः
भौमस्य वासरे पूजा कर्तव्या हनुमत्प्रभोः
भवे त्सश्शुचि रायु श्श्रीः पुत्र मित्र कळत्रवान् || 19

Śree Śarabhah:

Hanumān has to be worshipped on Tuesdays. Whoever does so, obtains purity, long life, and wealth and has wife, son, grandson and others. (19)

श्रीगवय
आमिशीकृत मार्तांडं गोष्पदीकृत सागरं
तृणीकृत दशग्रीवं आंजनेयं नमा म्यहम् || 20

Śree Gavayah:

I bow to Hanumān, who considered the Sun equal to a morsel of food, the ocean a depression formed bow the hoof-print of a cow and demons Rāvaņa a blade of grass. (20)

श्रीप्रहस्तः
उल्लंघ्य सिंधो स्सलिलं सलीलं
य श्शोकवह्निं जनकात्मजायाः
आदाय तेनैव ददाह लंकां
नमामि तं प्रांजलिंरांजनेयम || 21

Śree Prahastah:

I bow with folded hands to Hanumān, who brought the fire of Mother Seetā’s sorrow and, with it, burnt down Lanka. (21)

श्रीनलः
नमाम्यहं वायुज पादपंकजं
करोमि त द्वायुज पूजनं सदा
वदामि वातात्मज नाम मंगळम्
स्मरामि वायोर्भव कीर्तनं शुभम् || 22

Śree Nalah:

I always bow to the lotus feet of the sun of the Wind God and worship. I always mentally recite His auspicious name. I always mentally remember the great fame of the son of the Wind God. I always mentally recite the auspicious laudatory song to the sun of the Wind God. (22)

श्रीधर्मकः
सप्तषष्टिर्हतान कोटि वानराणां तरस्विनां
य स्संजीवनयामास तं वम्दे मारुतात्मजम् || 23

Śree Dharnakah:

I am bowing to Hanumān, who brought back to life 670 million powerful monkey warriors killed in the war. (23)

श्रीगजः
तनौ वालपाशः पिता पार्वतीशः
स्फुर द्बाहुदंडौ मुखे वज्रदंष्ट्रा
सती चांजना यस्य माता ततोन्यं
न जाने न जाने न जाने न जाने || 24

Śree Gajah:

I do not know anyone other than Hanumān, who has a tail, whose father is Śankara (Śiva) the husband of Pārvatee, who has a shining body and diamond strong teeth in the mouth. Yes, I do not know, I do not know, I do not know. (24)

श्रीरुक्षरजसः
बुद्धिर्बलं यशो धैर्यं निर्भयत्व मरोगतााजा
आजाड्यं वाक्पटुत्वं च हनुमत्स्मरणा द्भवेत् || 25

Śree Ŗukşjasah:

I always mentally remember Hanumān, who bestows knowledge, strength, fame, courage, fearlessness, freedom from maladies, freedom from mental troubles, good speech power and others. (25)

श्री संसातिः
सीता शोकस्य नाशाय श्रीरामे शोकनाशनं
साधकानां सुखं धन्यं वायुसूनं नमाम्यहम् || 26

Śree Sampātih:

I bow to the auspicious Hanumān, who removed the grief of Mother Seetā, the remover of the pathos of Lord Śreerāma and the happy form seen by all achievers. (26)

श्रीवेगवान्
आंजना वरपुत्राय रामेष्टाय हनूमते
सर्वलोकैक वीराय भविष्यद्ब्रह्मणे नमः || 27

Śree Vēgavān:

I bow to Hanumān, the ideal son of Mother Ańjana, the one dear to Rāma, the only valorous one in the entire world and the one going to be Brahma, the creator in future. (27)

श्रीरुंध्रग्रीवः
हनुमत्सदृशं दैवं नास्ति नस्तीति भूतले
तं पूजयन्ति सततं ब्रह्मागौरी महेश्वराः || 28

Śree Rundhragreevah:

As there is no God equal to Hanumān on the surface of the Earth, Brahma, Pārvatee and Paramēśwara and others are always worshipping Hanumān. (28)

श्रीदधिमुखः
आलोड्य वेदशास्त्राणि सर्वाण्यपि महर्षिभिः
इदमेकं सुनीर्णतं न दैवं हनुमत्परम् || 29

Śree Dadhimukhah:

The fact that no God is greater than Hanumān, was decided by seers knowledgeable in Vēdas and knowledge scripts (śāstras). (29)

श्रीसुदंष्टृः
मंगळं हनुमन्नित्यं मंगळं कपिपुंगव
मंगळं चाजंनासूनुनो मंगळं राघवप्रिय || 30

Śree Samadamşţrah:

Oh! Hanumān! May it always be auspicious to you! Oh! Best of the monkey warriors! Pure auspiciousness to you. Oh! Son of Mother Ańjana! Auspiciousness to you. Oh! One dear to Rāghava! May it always be auspicious to you. (30)

श्रीरुषभः
कणारस पूर्णाय जग दानंदहेतवे
कुक्षिथाकिल लोकाय हनूमद्बह्मणे नमः 31

Śree Ŗşabhah:

I bow to Hanumān, the kindest one, the one who is cause of bliss in this world and the one who has all the worlds in his belly. (31)

श्रीपृथु
दाता दापतयिता चैव संवाहानु रक्षक स्तथा
प्रेरकश्चानुमोदा च कर्ता भोक्ता कपीश्वरः || 32

Śree Pŗthuh:

The one that gives, the one that protects the devotees, the cause of inspiration to the world, the one that permits the worldly affairs to go on, the one who is the doer, the one that enjoys the deeds too is none other than Hanumān – there is nothing that is different from Hanumān in this world. (32)

श्रीजांबवान्
भुक्ति मुक्तिप्रदं नाम विहाय हनुमन तन
संसरंति जना मूडाः किं विचित्र मतः परम || 33

Śree Jāmbavān:

Oh! Hanumān! Leaving the auspicious name of Hanumān, who gives sustenance as well as liberation, foolish people are falling into the cycles of rebirth again and again. What is stranger than this? (33)

श्री ज्योतिर्मुखः
मत्प्रार्थना फल मिदं मम जन्मनश्च
नेच्छामि किंचि दपरं हनुमन्! महात्मान् |
त्व द्दास दासजन पाद र्जोनिकेत
मस्मद्दितो भवतु सेवकपारिजात || 34

Śree Jyōtirmukhah:

The one that is like a Pārijāta (Indian coral tree) to the devotees! Even the dust on the feet of your millions of devotees does favour to me! Oh! Great soul! Hanumān! That is what I seek as fruits of my prayers. Nothing more I seek at all. (34)

श्रीसुमुखः
रसने रससारज्ञ्न मधु रास्वाद कांक्षिणि
हनुमन्नाम पीयुषं सर्वदा रसनेपिब || 35

Śree Sumukhah:

Oh! Tongue! Understanding the pleasure of sweetness, you seeker of sweetness, always drink the sweetness of the the name of Hanumān. (35)

श्रीगोलांगूलः
कुतो दुर्दिनं वा कुतो भौमवारः
कुतो वैधृति स्तस्य भद्रा कथं वा
कुतो वा व्यतीपातदोष क्षुतं वा
हनूमत्पदध्यान वीताशुभस्य || 36

Śree Gōlāngoolah:

To one whose inauspiciousness is dispelled due to meditation upon Hanumān, where can be a bad day? What is in Tuesday? What is the fear of the vaidhrutiyoga (a particular position of the sun and moon – yogain the horoscope)? Or what is the doubt about the vyateepātadoşa (period of calamity as per the horoscope)? What is the doubt about ill omen on sneezing (as an action is being initiated)? There is no need for thinking about anything else before a deed is being initiated for Hanumān. It means that all the good omens follow meditation upon Hanumān. (36)

श्रीकुमुदः
त्रातारो भुवि पादाश्च मार्गा श्च रसने त्वया
हनुमन्निइर्मिता स्सन्ति जानानां हीनता कुतः || 37

Śree Kumudah:

Oh! Tongue! You are on the Earth to worship the lotus feet of Hanumān, which protect the devotees. There are Hanumān paths of meditation and others created by you. Why people should feel inferiority then? What is missing? (It means nothing). (37)

श्रीशबलिः
धन्योस्म्यमनु ग्रहीतोस्मि पुण्योस्मि महतोस्म्यहं
हनुमन त्व त्पदांभोज सेवा विभव योगितः || 38

Śree Śatabalih:

Oh! Hanumān! Because I got the opportunity to serve at your lotus feet, I became auspicious. I was blessed. I became a sinless soul. I became great. (38)

श्रीकेसरिः
त्वत्तोन्यं शरणं नास्ति त्व मेव मम रक्षकः
अतो मयि कृपादृष्ट्या हनुमन् रक्षमां सदा || 39

Śree Kēsarih:

Oh! Hanumān! There is no better protector than you. You are only my protector. So, show mercy on me and always protect me. (39)

श्रीमारीचः
सदा पापौघ निष्ट्तं पापेषु हृष्टमानसं
पापात्मनं महापापं रक्ष मां हनुमत्प्रभो || 40

Śree Māreecah:

Oh! Lord Hanumān! Protect me, the one that is pushed around by sinful groups, the one that has a mind for taking pleasure in sins and the worse sinner. (40)

श्रीतरुणः
हनुम दाज्ञया यच्च भावि तद्भवति धृवं
य दभावि न त द्भावि वृधा देहपरिश्वमः || 41

Śree Taruņah:

The one that never happens will definitely happen by the command of Hanumān. That that cannot happen will never happen. So inflicting physical suffering is wasteful. (41)

श्रीगोमुखः
अपराध शतं नित्यं कुर्वाणं मां नृशंस्कं
क्षमसस्व दासबुद्ध्यातवं हनुमन करुणानिधे || 42

Śree Gōmukhah:

Oh! Hanumān! Excuse me, the one that performs hundreds of mistakes daily considering this bad-natured one as your servant. (42)

श्रीपनसः
हनुमतो न परं परमार्थतो
हनुमतो न परं परमार्थतः
इति वदामि जनान् परमार्थतो
न हि परं भवतात्र विचक्षणं || 43

Śree Panasah:

If one takes a view from the side of the Supreme Being (Brahman), there is nothing greater than Hanumān. I am telling about people from this ‘other worldly’ point of view. There is nothing more to think about this. (43)

इतीदं वानरप्रोक्तं सर्वपापहरणं वरं
सर्वज्ञ्नानप्रदं चैव सर्वसौभाग्य वर्धनम || 44

This group of laudatory hymns (stōtram) told by the monkey warriors can dispel all sins. Gives all types of knowledge and increases all the auspicious nesses. (44)
