“The Story of the Structure”
(Hanumatpanjara Kathanam)
श्रीपराशरः
पंजरं तु प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणु मैत्रेय आदरात् || 1
Śrī Paraāśara:
Oh! Mytrēya! I am telling about the Hanumatpanjarstōtram (laudatory hymns of pure structure/skeleton of Hanumān). Listen to the practice (sādhana). (1)
अस्य पंजरस्य रुषिः श्रीरामचंद्र भगव्वन्निति च
छ्ंदोनुष्टुप् श्री पंचवक्त्र हनुमान् देवतेति च
ह्रां बीजं स्वाहा शक्तिः प्र्णवो कीलकं स्मृतः
दीर्घया मायया युक्तैः षडंगै परिकीर्तितः
रामदूत वानरमुख वायुनंदन तथा
नृसिंहमुख पूर्वकं अंजनासूनुः परंच
गरुडमुखं च तथा हरिमर्कट पदं परम्
कोडमुखं पदं चान्तं रामकार्य धुर्ंधरः
ततो अश्वमुखं चान्तं सर्वराक्षसनाशनः
सर्वमुख शब्तांताः सर्वेचर्थ्यंतं गताः
षडंगे करांगादयोू ह्रां ष्ट्कादिभि स्संयुतं
पटित्वातु पूर्वोक्तमार्गतो वापि
प्ंजर मारभे ततः || 2
The sage (ŗşi) of this panjarastōtra is Lord ŚreeRāmacandra, the meter (chandas) is anuşţup, the Five-Faced Hanumān is the Lord of it, the seed letter is hrōm, swāhā is the power (śakti), Ōm is to be remembered asthe key (keelakam);
The long (unending) illusion (doctrine of unreality) containingthe very famous (parikeertitah) are the Six Organs – şsdańgāni; the emissary of Rāma, the Monkey Face – Vānaramukham, inclusive of the Man-Lion-Faced – Narasimhamukham, son of the Wind God, the otherworldly-natured son of Mother Ańjana, and the word Garuda mukham (Eagle-Faced), also ending with the venerated word Vişņu (HariMamataMarkatāya);
The Boar-Faced – Krōdmukhamending with Rāmakāryadurandharah (expert in performing Rāma’s deeds); the Horse-Faced (Aśvamukham), ending with word sarvarākşasanāśanah (destroyer of all demons); at the end of all words ending with mukha (sarvēmukha) say in the fourth case (āya= to/for); uttering hrāmşaţ and others along with body-touching (şdańgā) and hand gesticulations (karāńgā) – having recited as stipulated, then the panjara (stōtra) has to be started. आदौ प्रणव मुच्चार्य व्ंदे हरिपदं ततः
उच्चार्य मकटपदं मर्कटयेति चोच्चरेटत् || 3
Panjara Stōtram
First pronouncing ‘Ōm’, then having said the word ‘Hari’, and then the word ‘markaţa’ and then the word markaţāya‘’ has to be said. (3)
अगिजायां समुच्चार्य द्वादशार्णो महामनुः || 4
Then on pronouncing the word ‘swāhā’, it becomes the 12-Lettered (dwādaśākşree) great mantra. (4)
शिरः पातु मम सदा सर्वसौख्य प्रदायकः || 5
May the provider of every happiness always, Lord Hanumān protect my head! (5)
अदौ प्रणव मुच्चार्य कपिबीजं ततोच्चरेत्
नृसिंहबीज मुच्चार्य गारुडं च समुच्चरेत || 6
First uttering the cosmic resonance ‘Ōm’, then the seed letter ‘hroum’ (Kapibeeja) has to be said. Then the seed letter ‘kştoum’ (Nŗsimhabeeja), followed by the seed letter ‘Kşmyroum’ (Garudabeeja= eagle seed letter). (6)
वराहबीज मुच्चार्य ह्यग्रीवं ततोच्चरेत्
नम्ः पद्ं ततोच्चर्य स पंचास्य पंचास्य महाकपेः
चतुर्थशार्ण मंत्रोयं मुखं पाया त्सदा मम || 7
Then saying ‘Gloum’ (boar or Varāhabeeja), followed by ‘hsoum’ (horse or Hayagreevabeeja). Then, if ‘PańcāsyaHanumān’ is said, it becomes the 14-Lettered mantra. May the Five-Faced Hanumān protect my face! (7)
आदौ प्रणव मुच्चार्य नमो भगवते पदं
पंचवदनाय चोच्चार्या पूर्वमुखेति चोच्चरेत् || 8
First saying the cosmic resonance ‘Ōm’, then the word ‘namō bhagavatē’ and then the word ‘pańcavadanāya’ (to the 5-Faced one), the word ‘poorvamukhē’ has to be said. (8)
वानरं बीज मुच्चार्य कपिमुखाय चोच्चरेत्
सर्वशत्रुहरा येति महाबला योच्चरेत || 9
Having uttered ‘hroum’ (the vānarabeeja), say ‘kapimukhāya’ (to the monkey-faced one), then ‘sarvaśatrusamhārāya’ (to the destroyer of all the enemies), and then ‘mahābalāya’ (to the mightily strong one). (9)
अग्निजायां ततोच्चार्य सप्तत्रिंशाक्षराभिधः
कंठं मम सदा पातु सर्वशत्रु विनाशकः || 10
Then if ‘swāhā’ is said, it is said to be the 37-Lettered (saptatrinśākşara) mantra. Hanumān, who can neutralise all the enemies may protect my throat (kanţha)! (10)
उच्चार्य प्रणवं चादौ नमो भगवतेति च
नारसिंह महाबीजं कराळपद मुच्चरेत् || 11
First saying ‘Ōm’, then the word ‘namō bhagavatē’, then the seed letter ‘kşroum’ (Nārasimhabeeja) and then to be said is the word ‘karāļa’ (ferocious). (11)
न्र्सिंहाय पदं चॉक्त्वा सकाबूत प्रेत च
पिशाच ब्रह्मराक्षस प्रमथनाय पदं वदेत् || 12
Then saying the word ‘Nārasimhāya’ (to the Man-Lion), one has to say ‘sakalabhootaprēta’ (all spirits and ghosts) and then the word ‘piśścabrahmarākşasapramathanāya’ (to the flesh eating spirit, most powerful demons and such dangerous ones) (12)
अग्निजायां ततोच्चार्य वसु वेदार्ण को मनुः
हृदयं मे सदा पातु सर्वशत्रु विनाशकः || 13
Then fire sacrifice related word ‘swāhā’ has to be told. This is the 38-Lettered (vēdārņa = easily understandable) mantra. May Hanumān, the neutraliser of all enemies always protect my heart! (13)
ओम् नमो भगवतेति पचवदनाय ततः
पश्चिममुखेति चोच्चार्य गारुडं बीज मुच्चरेत् || 14
Saying ‘Ōm namōbhagavatē’, then ‘Pańcavadanāya’ (to the 5-Faced one), then ‘paścimamukhē’ (west-faced) and then the ‘kşmyoum’ (gārudabeeja) has to be said. (14)
विरगरुडाय महा बलायेति पदं ततः
सर्वनाग प्रमथनायांते सकलवेशेति || 15
Then saying the word ‘veeraGarudāyamahābalāya’ (to the valorous Eagle, which is mightily powerful), then the word ‘sarvanāgapramathāya’ (the Lord spirit of all the serpents), and ultimately, ‘sakalavişaya’ (all the issues) has to be said. (15)
हराय स्वाहा त्वं ततः वेदाभ्यक्षर संयुतः
हनुमन्मोदरं सातु सर्वरोग निबर्हणः || 16
Then to be said is the word ‘Harāyaswāhā’ (submitted to Vişņu). This understandable 45-Lettered (vēdābjyakşara) mantra may protect my stomach from all the ailments. (16)
ओम नमो भगवतेति पंचवदनाय ततः
उत्तरमुखे चोचार्य क्रोद वाग्बीजमुच्चरेत् || 17
Saying ‘Ōm namō bhagavatē’, then ‘paańcavadnāya’ (5-Faced) and then ‘uttaramukhē’ (north-faced) has to be said, ultimately saying ‘gloum’, the (boar) seed letter. (17)
आदिवाराह सर्वस्ंपत्पदाय निधि भूमि च
प्रदाय पश्चाज्ज्वरेति रोग निकृंतन स्वाहा
नाभि पातु मम सदा सुखसौगभाग्य हेतुकः
नेत्र बाणार्ण्को मनोः पस्चात् प्रणव मुच्चरेत् || 18
Then ‘ādivarāhāyasarvasampatpradāyanidhibhoomipradāyajwaraeetirōgāyanikŗntanāya’ (submitted to the first boar = Varahāvatāra of Visşņu, giver of all the riches, giver of treasure trove and land and remover of fevers and troubles of the mundane world) has to be said. Hanumān, the Lord of all the auspicious riches may protect my navel! This is the 52-Lettered mantra. Utter the cosmic resonance ‘Ōm’ before reciting the next mantra. (18)
नमो भगवते प्ंच वदनाय पद्ं तत्ः
ऊर्थ्वमुखे त्यंतेहयबीजं ततःपरम् || 19
Saying ‘namōbhagavatēpańcavadanāya’ (to the 5-Faced Lord), then ‘oordhvamukhē’ (upside-faced), then saying the seed letter ‘hsoum’ (root letter for the horse), (19)
हयग्रीवाय सकल प्रदाय सकलेति च
जन वशीकरणाय सकल दानवांतकाय || 20
Saying ‘Hayagreevāyasakalapradāya’ (all bestowing, horse faced Lord of knowledge Hayagreeva), then ‘sakala’ and again ‘janavaseekaraņāya’ (to the controller of people’s minds), and concluding with ‘sakaladānavāntakāya’ destroyer of all types of demons. (20)
पश्चात्पाज्ञ्नाय स्वाहेति षट्चंचशदर्णको मनुः
मम जनुद्वयं पातु सर्वराक्षस नाशकः || 21
Seeking Physical Protection
Then as the knowledgeable says ‘swāhā’ (submitted), it becomes the 56-Lettered (şaţpańcāsāņaka) mantra. Hanumān, the destroyer of all the demons, may protect my two thighs. (21)
ओम् च ह्री मित्ययं चोक्त्वा नमो भगवते ततः
ब्रह्मास्त संहारकाय राक्षसकुल नाशयेति || 22
Saying ‘Ōm’, then ‘hreem’, then ‘namōbhagavatē’, then ‘brahmāstrasamhārakāya’ (to the destroyer of the ultimate weapon of Brahma, the Creator), then ‘rākşasakulanāśakāya’ (to the destroyer of the demon clan) (22)
पताक हनुमतेति मायाबिजत्रयं ततः
क्रोडास्त्र वह्निजायांतं मनुः पादवयं मम || 23
Then saying ‘patākaHanumatē’ (to the lead banner Hanumān), then the mantra in which it is said ‘Imimimgloumswaāhā’ (the triple magic = mayāmantratrayam, the boar seed letter, and the fire sacrifice submission word) may protect my feet! (23)
ह्रां नमः पंचवस्त्राय नाभिदेशं सदा मम
ह्र नमः पंचवस्त्रय पातु जम्घद्वयं मम || 24
‘Hrāmnamhpańcavaktrāya’ (the 5-Faced one) may always protect my navel area! ‘Hreemnamhpańcavaktrāya’ may always protect my calf muscle areas (lower limbs). (Similar translation can be done for protection of the other specific organs can be requested in the same manner. Hence, the same is reproduced below as in the original). (24)
ह्रूं नम्ः पंचवक्त्राय पातु जनुद्वयं मम्
ह्रैं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय पादद्वंद्वं सदावतु
ह्रौं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय कटिदेशं सदावतु
हः नमः पंचवस्त्राय चोदरं पातु सर्वदातु
ऐं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय हृदयं पातु सर्वदा
क्लां नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय बाहुयुग्मं सदावतु
क्लीं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय करयुग्मं सदामम
क्लूं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय कंठदेशं सदावतु
क्लैं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय चुबुक्ं मे सदावतु
क्लौं नमः पंचवस्त्रा पातु चौष्ठद्वयं मम
क्लः नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय नेत्रयुग्मं सदावतु
रां नम्ः प्ंचवस्त्राय श्रोतयुग्मं सदावतु
रीं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय फालं पातु महबलः
रूं नमः पंचवस्त्राय शिरः पाया त्सदा मम
रैं नमः पंचवस्त्राय शिखां मम सदावतु
रौं नमः पंचवस्त्राय मूर्थानं पातु सर्वदा
रः नम्ः मुखं पातु सदा मम
क्रां नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय श्रोत्रयुग्मं सदावतु
क्ष्रीं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय नेत्रयुग्मं सद मम
क्ष्रूं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय पातु शोष्ठद्वयं मम
क्षैं नम्ः पंचवस्त्रा भृयुग्मं पातु सर्वदा
क्षौं नमः पंचवस्त्राय नासिकां पातु सर्वदा
क्षं नमः पंचवस्त्राय कठं पातु कपीश्वरः
ग्लां नमः पंचवस्त्राय पातु वक्षस्थलं मम
ग्लीं नमः पंचवस्त्राय बाहुयुग्मं सदा मम
ग्लूं नमः पंचवस्त्राय करयुग्मं सदावतु
ग्लैं नमः पंचवस्त्राय मम पातु वळित्रयं
ग्लौं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय चोदरं पातु सर्वदा
ग्लः नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय नाभि पातु सदा मम
आं नमः पंचवस्त्राय वानराय कटिं मम
ईं नमः पंचवस्त्राय ऊरुयुग्मं सदावतु
ऊं नमः पंचवस्त्राय जनुद्वंद्वं सदा मम
ऐंं नमः पंचवस्त्राय गुल्फद्वंद्वं सदावतु
औं नम्ः पंचवस्त्राय पादद्वंद्वं सदावतु
आः नमः पंचवस्त्राय सर्वांगानि सदावतु || 25
Hroomnamahpańcavakttrāya – pātujānudwayam mama (protect my knees)
Hraaimnamahpańcavakttrāya – pādadwandamsadāvatu (- both feet)
Hroumnamahpańcavakttrāya – katidēśamsadāvatu (- the waist)
Hrahnamahpańcavakttrāya – cōdarampātusarvadā (- the belly)
Aymnamahpańcavakttrāya – hŗdayampātusarvadā (- the heart)
Klāmnamahpańcavakttrāya – bāhuyugmamsadāvatu (- the two shoulders)
Kleemnamahpańcavakttrāya – karayuhmamsadāvatu mama (- the two hands)
Kloomnamahpańcavakttrāya – kanthadēśamsadāvatu (- the neck)
Klaimnamahpańcavakttrāya – cubukammēsadāvatu (- the chin)
Kloumnamahpańcavakttrāya – pātucouşţdvayam mama (- the two lips)
Klahnamahpańcavakttrāya – nētrayugmamsadāvatu (- both eyes)
Rāmnamahpańcavakttrāya – śrotayugmamsadāvatu (- two ears)
Reemnamahpańcavakttrāya – phālampātumahābalah (- the forehead)
Room namahpańcavakttrāya – śirahpāyātsadaāvatu (- the head)

Ūmnamahpańcavakttrāya–jānudwamdvamsadā mama (- the two knwws)
Eimnamahpańcavakttrāya – gulphadwandvamsadāvatu (- the two ankles)
Aumnamahpańcavakttrāya – pādadwandvamsadāvatu (- the two feet)
Ahnamahpańcavakttrāya – sarvāńgānisadāvatu (- all the body parts) (25)
वानरः पूर्वतः पातु दक्षिणे नरकेसरिः
प्रतीच्यां पातु गरुडः उत्तरे पातु सूकरः
ऊर्त्वं हयननः पातु सर्वतः पातु मृत्युहा || 26
Seeking Directional Protection
Let the East be protected by the Monkey Form! Let the South be protected by the Man-Lion Form! Let the West be protected by the Eagle-Garuda Form! Let the North be protected by the Boar Form! Let the Upper parts be protected by the Horse-Hayagreeva Form! Let the Death Defying – Mŗtyunjaya Form protect (us) everywhere! (26)
वानरः पूर्वतः पातु आग्नेय्यां वायुनंदनः
दक्षिणे पातु हनुमान् निऋते केसरीप्रियः || 27
Let the East be protected by the Monkey Form! Let the East be protected by the Monkey Form (Face)! Let the Southeast-Āgnēya be protected by the son of the Wind God Form! Let the South be protected by the Hanumān Form! Let the Southwest- Nairuthi be protected by the Darling of Kēśri Form! (27)
प्रतीयां पातु दैत्यारिः वायुव्यां पातु मंगळः
उत्तरे रामदास्तु निम्म युद्ध विशारदः || 28
Let the West be protected by the Enemy of the Demons Form! Let the Northwest be protected by the Auspicious Form! Let the North be protected by the Servant of Rāma Form, the expert in serious warfare (nimmayuddhaviśāradah)! (28)
ऊर्ध्वे रामसखः पातु पाताळे च कपीश्वरः
सर्वतः पात पंचास्य सर्वरोग विकृंतनः || 29
Let the Top region be protected by the Friend of Rāma Form! Let the Subterranean World (pātāla) be protected by the Lord of the Monkeys Form! Let the Five Faced Form protect everywhere by removing ailments. (29)
हनूमान् पूर्वतः पातु दक्षिणे पवनात्मजः
पातु प्रतीचि मक्षघ्नो उदीच्यां सागारतारकः || 30
Let the East be protected by the Hanumān Form! Let the South be protected by the son of Wind God Form! Let the West be protected by the Destroyer of Demons Form! Let the North be protected by the Form of the one, who crossed the ocean! (30)
ऊर्ध्वं केसरीनंदनः पा त्वथस्ता द्विष्णुभक्तः
पातु मध्यप्रदेशे तु सर्वलंका विदाहकः || 31
Let the Upper part be protected by son of Kēśri Form! Let the Subterranean World be protected by the Devotee of Vişņu Form! Let the one that burnt the Lanka city, Hanumān Form protect middle region! (31)
एवं सर्वतो मां पातु पंचवक्त्र सदा कपिः || 32
The Five Faced Hanumān Form protects me everywhere! (32)
सुग्रीवसचिवः पातु मस्तकं मम सर्वदा
वायुनंदनः फालं मे महावीरः भ्रूमाध्यमम् || 33
Seeking Bodily Protection
Let my head be protected by Minister of Sugreeva Form! Let the son of Wind God Form protect my forehead part! (33)
नेत्रे चायापहारी च पातु शोत्रे प्लवंगमः
कपोलौ कर्णमूले च पात श्रीरामकिंकरः || 34
Let my eyes be protected by the destroyer of the Shadow-grabber demon (Chāyāgrāhi). Let the one with Monkey Form protect my ears. Let the servant of Śreerāma protect my cheeks and bases of the ears. (34)
नासाग्र मंजनासूनुः पातु वक्त्रं हरीश्वरः
पातु कंठं च दैत्यारि स्कंधौ पातु सुरार्चितः || 35
Let the tip of my nose be protected by son of Mother Ańjana! Let the best of the monkeys protect my face! Let the demon destroyer protect my throat! Let the Lord prayed upon by the Gods protect my nape! (35)
जानौ पातु महातेजः कूर्परौ चरणायुधः
नखान् नखायुधः पातु कक्षं पातु कपीश्वरः || 36
The great radiant personality may protect my knees! The one who uses feet as weapons, may protect my knee caps! The one that uses nails as weapons may protect my nails! The Lord of Monkeys may protect my armpits! (36)
सीताशोकापहारी तु स्तनौ पातु निरंतरं
लक्ष्मण प्राणदातासौ कुक्षीं पा त्वनिशं मम || 37
Let my breasts be protected by the remover of the sorrow of Mother Sitā! Let the giver of life back to Lakşmaņa protect my belly! (37)
वक्षौ मुद्रापहारी च पातु पार्श्वे भुजायुधाः
लंखिणीभंजनः पातु पृष्ठदेशे निरंतरम् || 38
Let the taker of the signet ring (of Rāmato Sitā) protect my chest! Let the one who has the shoulder as weapon, protect my side parts! Let the destroyer of the demon Lankiņi protect my back! (38)
नाभिं च रआमदास स्तु कटिं पा र्वनिलात्मजः
गुह्यं पातु महाप्राज्ञ्नः सन्धौ पातु शिवप्रियः || 39
Let the server of Rāma protect my navel! Let the son of the Wind God protect my navel! Let the son of the Wind God protect my waist! Let the great wise one protect my secret parts! Let the one dear to Lord Śiva protect my pelvis (joining body and legs)! (39)
ऊरू च जानुनी पातु लंकाप्रासाद भंजनः
जंघौ पातु कपिश्रेष्टः गुल्फौ पातु महाबलः || 40
Let the one that destroyed the buildings of Lanka protect my thighs and knees! Let the best one amongst the monkey warriors protect my calves (lower parts of legs)! Let the mightily strong one protect my ankles! (40)
आचलोद्धारकः पातु पादौ भास्करसन्निभः
अंगा नमितसत्वड्यः पातु पादांगुळि स्स्दा || 41
Let the one that carried mountains protect my feet! Let the one equal to Lord Sun protect my body parts! (41)
इति श्रीपराशरसंहितायां श्री पराशरमैत्रेयसंवादे पंचमुख हनुम्न्ंत्र विवरणे श्रि पंचमुख हनुमत्पंजरं नाम चतुस्स्प्ततितमः पटलः
