
73rd Chapter (Triisaptatih Paţalah)
“The Heart of the Five-Faced Hanumān”
(ŚreePańcamukhaHanumadhŗdayam)
श्रीपराशरः
शृणुमैत्रेय विप्रेंद्र हनुमंत्र साधनम्
मंत्रं सांगं जपे द्यस्तु तस्य सिद्दि र्न संशयः || 1
Śrī Paraāśara:
Oh! Best amongst Brahmins!Mytrēya! Listen to the practice (sāshana) of the Hanumanmantra that I am telling.Whoever recites the mantra as per the stipulated ministering (mantrāńga) will definitely achieve (siddhi) the objective. (1)
स एव सिद्दिदं चैव स एव फलदं तथा
तद्दि नित्यपुरश्चर्या सर्वसाधन मुत्तमम् || 2
Only the mantra that was recited fully will give all the achievements and gives the desired uses. The best mantra recitation repetition happens only when this all-achieving (sarvasādhaka) mantra is recited fully. (2)
ह्रुदयं पंजरं स्तोत्रम पूर्व स्यांगानि वै मुने!
माला कवच स्तोत्राणि उत्तरांगाः प्रकिर्तिताः || 3
The heart (hŗdayam), the bare structure (panjaram) and the praising hymns (stōtram) are the first parts (poorvāńgāh); the stringed (mālā) mantra, the guard (kavaca) and the praising hymns (stōtram) are known as the later parts (uttarāńgāh). (3)
आदौ ह्रदयं वक्ष्यामि सावधावानमना शृणु || 4
I am first telling about the heart of Hanumān mantra. Listen attentively. (4)
श्री पंचवक्त्र हनुमर्द्धदयस्य रुषिश्चैव श्रीराम
चंद्र भगवान् छंदोनष्टुप् तथा प्रोक्ता
म्ंत्रोका देवता च ओं बीजम् रुद्रमूर्तये
शक्तिः प्रोक्ता स्वाहा कीलकम् प्रसादे च विनियोगः
ह्रा मित्र्यादि षडंगानि भूरित्त्यादिभि र्दिग्भंधनम् || 5
It was told that the saint (ŗşi) and Lord, as well as the Godof the Fife-Faced Hanumān heart (Hanumaddhŗdayasya) mantrais Lord Śreerāmacandrah), the meter (chandas) is anuşţup (rhythm with eight syllables to a line of the poem), ‘Ōm’ is the seed (beejam), Rudramoorthi (fierce Form of Śiva), ‘swāhā’ the key (keelakam), prasāda (the consecration) as the purpose/injunction (viniyōgah); the binding (digbandha) has to be with the use of ‘hrām’ and the other six parts (şadāńgāni) ‘bhoo’ and others. (5)
ध्यानम्ः
ध्याये द्बालदिवाकर द्युति निभं देवारि दर्पापहं
देवेंद्र प्रमुख प्रशस्त यशसं देदीप्यमानं रुचा
सुग्रीवादि समस्त वानरयुतं सुव्यक्त तत्त्व प्रियं
स्ंरक्तारुण लोचनं पवनजं पीतांबरालंकृतम् || 6
Dhyānam
Let Hanumān, the son of the Wind God be meditated upon, the one equal to the brilliance of the rising Sun, the one that dents the pride of the demons, the one with such shining that Indra and other greats praise with Vedic (ŗg) mantras, the one with Sugreeva and all other courageous monkeys, the one interested in well-explained philosophical issues, the one with red eyes and yellow silk garment. (6)
ओम नमो वायुपुत्राय पंचवक्त्राय ते नमः
नमोस्तु दीर्घ वालाय राक्षासांतकराय च || 7
The Mantra
I bow for the son of the Wind God. I bow to Thee, the Five-Faced one (Pańcmukha). I bow to Thee, the one with a long tail that destroys the demons. (7)
वज्रदेह! नमस्तुभ्यं शतानन मदापह्
सीता संतोशकरण! नमो राघवकिंकर || 8
I bow to Thee with a diamond hard body. I bow to Thee, the one that dented the unnecessary pride of Śatakanţah (the 100-headed demon). I bow to Thee, the one in service of Lord Rāma. (8)
सृष्टि प्रवर्त्कक नमो महास्थित नमोनमः
कळा काष्ट स्वरूपाय मास संवत्सरात्मक || 9
Oh! The Creator (Sŗşţikartā)! I bow to Thee. I bow to Thee, Oh! The keeper of the creation (Sthitikartā). I bow to Thee, the form of all arts and times. I bow to Thee, the form of the month and the year. (9)
नमस्ते ब्रह्मरूपाय शिवरूपायते नमः
नमो विष्णुस्वरूपाय सूर्यरूपाय ते नमः || 10
I bow to Thee, the form of Brahma, the Creator. I bow to Thee, the form of Śiva. I bow to Thee, the form of Vişņu. I bow to Thee, the form of the Sun. (10)
नमो वह्नि स्वरूपाय नमो गगनचारिणे || 11
I bow to Thee, Hanumān, the form of the Fire God (Agni). I bow to Thee, the wanderer in the sky. (11)
सर्व र्ंभावन चर! अशोकवन नाशक!
नमो कैलासनिलय! मलयाचल संश्रय || 12
I bow to Thee that dwell in all the banana groves! The destroyer of the Aśokavana (the grove where Seetā was held in Lanka, by Rāvaņa)! The one that reside on Mount Kailāsa and Mount Malaya.(12)
नमो रावणनाशाय इंद्रजि ध्वधकारिणे
महादेवात्मक! नमो नमो वायु तनूभव || 13
I bow to Thee, the destroyer of Rāvanņa. I bow to Thee, the cause of killing of the demon Indrajit. I bow to Thee, the very godly form. I bow to Thee, the son of the Wind God. (13)
नम स्सुग्रीवसचिव् सीता संतोशकारण
समुद्रोल्लंघन नमो सौमित्रेः प्राणदायक || 14
Oh! Minister of Sugreeva! I bow to Thee. Oh! The one that gave happiness to mother Seetā! I bow to Thee. The one who crossed the ocean! I bow to Thee. The one that gifted life to Lakşmaņa! I bow to Thee. (14)
महावीर! नम्स्तुभ्यं दीर्घबाहो नमोनमः
दीर्घवाल नमस्तुभ्यं वज्रदेफह नमोन्मः || 15
Oh! Great warrior! I bow to Thee. The long-shouldered one! I bow to Thee. One with a long tail! I bow to Thee. One with a diamond hard body! I bow to Thee.The one that destroyed the shadow-grasper demon (Simhikā)! I bow to Thee. (15)
चायाग्रह हर नमो वर सौम्यमुखेक्षण!
सर्वदेव सुस्ंसेव्य मुनिसंघ नमस्कृत || 16
The one with best and kind glances! I bow to Thee. The one worshipped by all the Gods! I bow to Thee. The one bowed to by the group of sages! I bow to Thee. (16)
अर्जुनध्वज संवास कृष्णार्जुन स्पूजित!
दर्मार्थ काम मोक्षाख्य पुरुषार्थ प्रवर्तक || 17
The one who resides on the flag of Arjuna! I bow to Thee. The one worshipped by Krişņa and Arjuna! The one who resides on the flag of Arjuna! I bow to Thee. The proponent of the four aims of a person (caturvidhapuruşārtha) – dharma (righteousness), artha (wealth), kāma (wish), mōkşa (freedom from the mundane world)! I bow to Thee. (17)
ब्रह्मास्त्र वंद्य भगवन आह तासुरनायक!
भक्त कल्पमहाभूज भूत बेताळ नाशक || 18
The one that was bowed to by the Brahmāstra (the greatest missile)! Oh! The greatest God! The destroyer of demon leaders! The Kalpavŗkşa (the desire fulfilling Tree) of the devotees! The destroyer of spirits (bhoota) and magical spirits (bētāļa), I bow to Thee. (18)
दुष्टग्रह हरानंत वासुदेव नमोस्तु ते
श्रिरामकार्ये चतुर पार्वतीगर्भ संभव || 19
The neutrliser of harming planets (duşţgraha)! The one with no end (Ananta)! The Form of Vişņu! I bow to Thee. The one adept in performing the tasks of Lord Rāma! Son of mother Pārvatee! I bow to Thee. (19)
नम्ः प्ंपावन चर रुष्यमूक कृतालय
धान्यमाली शापहर कालनेमि निबर्हण || 20
The one that goes about in the waters of River Pampā! The one that lives on the Mount Ŗşyamooka! The one that removed the curse of Dhānyamālee! The onwe that killed the demon Kālanēmi! I bow to Thee. (20)
सुवर्च्ल्ला प्राणनाथ रामचंद्र परायण
नमो वर्गस्वरूपाय वर्णनीय गुणोदय || 21
The spouse of mother Suvarcchalā! I bow to Thee. The one who is interested only in Lord Śreerāmacandra! I bow to Thee. The one that can change forms at will! I bow to Thee. The one with adorable character! I bow to Thee. (21)
वरिष्टाय नम स्तुभ्यं वेदरूप नमोनम्ः
नम स्त्रुभ्यं नम स्तुभ्यं भूय भुय़ोू नमा म्यहम || 22
Best of all! I bow to Thee. The form of the Vēdas! I bow to Thee. Again and again I bow to Thee. (22)
इति ते कथितं देवि हृदयं श्रीहनूमतः
सर्वस्ंपत्करं पुण्यं सर्व सौख्य विवर्थनम || 23
Fruits of Recitation
Oh! Pārvatee! What I narrated to you is the Hanumadhŗdayastōtra. This gives all the riches. Equal to good deeds (puņyaprada). Enhance all the happiness. (23)
दुष्टभूत ग्र्ह हरं क्षयापस्मार नाशनम || 24
Remover of bad spirits and planets (duşţagraha). It removes dangerous diseases like kşaya (TB) and apasmāra (unconciousness). (24)
यस्त्वात्मनिययो भत्क्त्या वायुसॉनो सुमंगळम्
हृदयं पठते नित्यं स ब्रह्मसदृशो भवेत् || 25
Whoever confidently recites this auspicious Hanumadhŗdaya mantra with devotion regularly will become equal to Brahma. (25)
अजप्तघृदयं यो यः मंत्रं जपति मानवः
स दुःखं शीघ्र माप्नोति मंत्रसिद्धि र्न जायते || 26
Whoever does not do so (without worshiping the Hŗdaya), the mantra will not fructify. (26)
सत्यं सत्यं पुनः सत्यं मंत्र सिद्धिकरं वरं
इत्थं च कथितं पूर्वं सांबेन स्वप्रियां प्रति || 27
This Hŗsaya causes great achievement of the mantra. This is absolutely true. Thus it was told once by the great Śivato his consort Pārvatee. (27)
महर्षेः गौतमत् पूर्वं मया प्राप्त मिदं मुने
त न्मया प्रहितं सर्वं शिष्यवात्सल्य कारणात् || 28
Oh! Sage Mytrēya! I learnt about this heart (of the mantra) from sage Gautama. Out of affection for a pupil, I am telling you this. (28)
