72nd Chapter (Dwisaptatih Paţalah)

“The Story of the Feature of the Hymn of Praise”

(StōtraprakāraKathanam)

श्रीपराशरः
स्तोत्रांतरं प्रवक्ष्यामि सर्वमंत्रमयं मुने
पार्वतीश्वरसंवादं स्तोत्राणामुत्तमेात्तमम्।। 1

Śrī Paraāśara:

Oh! Sage Mytrēya! I am telling you about the hymn of praise (stōtra) that is full of mantras. This stōtra that is in the form of a dialogue between Pārvati and Ēśvara, is the very best one. (1)

यक्षरी
आदौ ‘ह’ कारमुच्चार्य ‘नु’ कारं तदनंतरम्
‘मा’ कारमुच्चरेद्धीमान् ‘न’ कारं चास्वरं ततः।। 2

Tryakşaree (The 3 Lettered)

Uttering first the letter ‘ha’, the letter ‘nu’ has to be told. A wise one should then say the letter ‘’ and then the letter ‘n’ without a vowel (that is, Hanumān). (2)

पव्म्चाक्षरी
त्रिवर्णो यं मनुरिह बालायामनुपल्लवः
स्फ्रें ‘ह्रूं’ ख्रूं ह्रौं समुच्चार्य ह्येष पव्म्चाक्षरो मनुः।। 3

Pańcākşaree (The 5 Lettered)

The one toldis a 3-lettered mantra. Starting with the cosmic sound ‘Ōm’ followed, in the order, saying the secondary exclamations (anupallavah) ‘sprēm’, ‘hroom’, ‘broom’ and ‘hroum’ it becomes the 5-lettered mantra. (3)

षडक्षरी
आदौ प्रणवमुच्चार्य शक्तिबीजमनंतरम्
कपयेति पदं चोक्त्वा बह्रिजायां समुच्चरेत्
तारादिमुच्चरेत्तत्र षडक्षरमुदीरितम्।। 4

Şsdākşaree (The 6 Lettered)

Saying first the cosmic sound ‘Ōm’, then putting the base power letter (śaktibeeja) ‘lam’ and then saying ‘kapayē’ and say the word ‘swāhā’. This is the 6-lettered mantra preceded by the cosmic sound. (4)

सप्ताक्षरीः
वेदादिवह्रिजायांतं रामदूताय चोच्चरेत्
सप्ताक्षरमिमं मन्त्रं मंत्राणामुत्तमोत्तमम्।। 5

Şapākşaree (The 7 Lettered)

Saying first the cosmic sound ‘Ōm’, then saying ‘Rāmadūtāya’ and ‘swāhā’. This is the 7-lettered mantra, the best amongst all the mantras. (5)

अष्टाक्षरी
आदौ तारं समुच्चार्य हनुमद्बीजमुच्चरेत्
आंजनेयाय शब्दं च नमश्शब्दं तदुच्चरेत्
अयमष्टाक्षरो मंत्रः सर्वोत्कृष्टो जगत्त्रये।। 6

Aşţākşaree (The 8 Lettered)

It will be the 8-lettered mantra if the ‘Ōm’ is said, followed by the seed letter ‘hroum’ followed by following ‘Āńjanēyāya’ followed by the word ‘namah’. This is the best of mantras in the three worlds. (6)

दशाक्षरी
आदौ श्रीबीजमुच्चार्य मायाबीजमनंतरम्
वायुनन्दनायेति तथा स्वाहांतं प्रजपेत्सुधीः
दशाक्षरमिमं मंत्रं मन्त्राणामुत्तमोत्तमम्।। 7

Daśākşaree (The 10 Lettered)

Saying first the cosmic sound ‘Ōm’, putting the mysterious (māyā) base letter (beeja) ‘im’, then ‘Vāyunandanāya’ followed by ‘swā’. So should a scholar recite it. The Daśākşaree mantra is best among mantras. (7)

द्वादशाक्षरी
आदौ प्रणवमुच्चार्य हरिमर्कटशब्दतः
मर्कटाय पदं पश्चात् स्वाहांतं प्रजपेत्सुधीः
द्वादशाक्षरमंत्रो यं मुनिभिः परिकीर्तितः।। 8

Dwādaśākşaree (The 12 Lettered)

Saying first the cosmic sound ‘Ōm’, then the word ‘Harimarkaţa’, then ‘markaţāya’ followed by ‘swā’. So should a mantra to be recited. The Dwādaśākşaree mantra was praised by the Seers. (8)

त्रयोदशाक्षरी
एकाक्षरं हनूमतः प्रथमं तु समुच्चरेत्
हनुमते पदं तत्र रामभक्ताय संवदेत्।। 9

Trayōdaśākşaree (The 13 Lettered)

Uttering the base letter ‘hroum’ first, then telling the word ‘Hanoomaţē’, followed by the word ‘Rāmabhakţāya’ and ending with ‘swāhā’. (9)

संपत्पल्लवसंयुक्तं पूर्वं प्रणवमुच्चरेत्
त्रयोदशाक्षरी विद्या महामनुरिति स्मृता।। 10

Before that (however) the cosmic sound ‘Ōm’ and the base letter ‘Śreem’ have to be told. This is Trayōdaśākşaree (the 13 Lettered) knowledge (vidyā). This has to be known as the great mantra. (10)

अष्टसंख्या इमे मन्त्राः स्तोत्रमध्ये प्रकीर्तिताः
शंभुना चोपदिष्टाश्च पार्वत्यै हितकाम्यया।। 11

These eight mantras were told by Śiva (Parameśwara) to Pārvatee in the interest of the welfare of the world. So was extolled in the middle of the stōtra. (11)

सर्वेषामेव मंत्राणामष्षिरीश्वर उच्यते
हनुमान्देवता प्रोक्ता छंदो गायत्रिरुच्यते।। 12

It was told that, for all the above mantras, Ēśwara is the seer (ŗşi), Hanumān is the lord and Gāyatree is the meter (chandas). (12)

न्यासं कृत्वा प्रयत्नेन मूलमन्त्रविधानतः
मन्त्रस्य देवताध्यानं प्रत्येकं तु पृथक्पृथक्
सर्वेषामेव मन्त्राणामेकः परिष्कार इष्यते।। 13

Having performed the ańganyāsa (systemic body part touching) and the karanyāsa (hand gesticulations) and others using the base mantra, worship of the Lord has to be done separately for each mantra. The moral-cultural procedures to be followed are the same for all the mantras, it was told. (13)

ईश्वरः
शृण् देवि! प्रवक्ष्यामि स्तोत्रं सर्वशुभावहम्
सर्वकामप्रदं नृणां हनुमत्स्तोत्रमुत्तमम्।। 14

Ēśvarah (Lord Śiva)

“Listen Pārvatee! This is the best Hanumatstōtra that fulfills all the wishes of people. (14)

तप्तहाटकसंकाशं नानापुष्पविभूषितम्
उद्यद्बालार्कवदनं त्रिनेत्रं कुंडलोज्जवलम्।। 15

The one that has a burnished gold like body colour, adorned with flowers of different types, the one that has a face like the rising Sun, the one with three eyes, the one shining with ear hangings, (15)

मौंजीकौपीनसंयुक्तं हेमयज्ञोपवीतिनम्
पिंगलाक्षं निक्षिप्तवालाग्रं मेरुशौलाग्रसंस्थितम्।। 16

The wearing the munja grass (darbha) girdle around waist, the one wearing a kaupīna (usually a small strip worn over the private parts), the one wearing a golden sacred thread (janeu), the one with orange coloured eyes, the one with a mighty body, the one carrying fearsome weapon and a hill, (16)

मूर्तित्रयात्मकं वीरं महाशौर्यं महाहनुम्।। 17

The one holding the tip of His tail right above the head, the one who stays on Mount Mēru, the one that is the very form of Brahma, Vişņu and Śiva, a warrior, a valorous and the one with a great jaw. (17)

हनूमंतं वायुसुतं नमामि ब्रह्मचारिणम्।। 18

Paying Obeisance

Hanumān, Vāyusuta (son of Wind God), the celibate, to whom I bow reverentially. (18)

त्रिवर्णाक्षरमंत्रस्थं जपाकुसुमसन्निभम्
नानाभूषणसंयुक्तमांजनेयं नमाम्यहम्।। 19

The one that reside in the 3-Lettered (trivarņākşara) mantra, shining like the jāpa flower (China rose), the one decked with a variety of ornaments; to such Hanumān, I bow in reverence. (19)

पव्म्चाक्षरस्थितं देवं नीलनीरदसन्निभम्
पूजितं सर्वदेवैस्तु राक्षसारिं नमाम्यहम्।। 20

I bow in reverence to Hanumān, the one equal to black clouds, the one worshipped by all the divine personalities, the enemy of the demons and the one that exists in the 5-Lettered (pańcākşara) mantra.(20)

अचलद्युतिसंकाशं सर्वालंकारभूषितम्
षडक्षरस्थितं देवं नमामि ब्रह्मचारिणम्।। 21

I bow in reverence to Hanumān, the one that is equal to a mountain in radiance, shining with all types of ornaments, the one that is celibate and the dweller in the 6-Lettered (şaddkşara) mantra. (21)

सप्तवर्णमयं देवं हरिद्राभं सुरार्चितम्
सुंदरास्याब्जसहितं त्रिनेत्रं तं नमाम्यहम्।। 22

I bow in reverence to Hanumān, the one having a body colour equal to that of turmeric (rich yellow), the one worshipped by the divine personalities, the one having a beautiful lotus face (mukhapadmāh), the one with three eyes and residing in the 7-Lettered (saptavarņa) mantra. (22)

अष्टाक्षराधिपं देवं क्षीरवर्णमहाहनुम्
नमामि जगतां वंद्यं लंकाप्राकारदाहकम्।। 23

I bow in reverence to Hanumān, the one that is milky complexioned, the one with big jaws (mahāhanua), the one that burnt down the Lanka city and the presiding deity of the 8-Lettered (aşţākşaree) mantra. (23)

आतपीपुष्पसंकाशं दशवर्णात्मकं विभुम्
जटाधरं चतुर्बाहुं नमामि कपिनायकम्।। 24

I bow in reverence to Hanumān, the one that has brilliance like the athasee flower, the one whose hair is in plaits, the one with four shoulders, leader of men, capable of everything and the Lord of the 10-Lettered (Daśavarņātmaka) mantra. (24)

द्वादशाक्षरमंत्रस्थं नायकं कंुतधारिणम्
अंकुशं च दधानं तं कपिवर्यं नमाम्यहम्।। 25

I bow in reverence to Hanumān, the one that carries a javelin weapon, an elephant goad and the Lord of the 12-Lettered (dwādaśakşara) mantra. (25)

त्रयोदशाक्षरयुतं सीतादुःखनिवारणम्
हेमवर्णलसत्कायं भजे सुग्रीवमंत्रिणम्।। 26

I bow in reverence to Hanumān, the Lord of the 13-Lettered (trayōdaśākşara) mantra, the one that removed the sorrow of Mother Sītā, the one resplendent in golden body colour and the one that was a minister of Sugreeva. (26)

मालामंत्रात्मकं देवं चित्रवर्णं चतुर्भुजम्
पाशाकुशा भयकरं घृतटंकं नमाम्यहम्।। 27

I bow in reverence to Hanumān, the one with a strange (golden) body colour, the one having four shoulders, the one carrying a lasso (pāśa) and an elephant goad (ankuśa), the one according protection and the Lord of the mālāmantra (string mantra). (27)

सुरासुरगणैस्सर्वैः संस्तुतं प्रणमाम्यहम्।। 28

I bow in reverence to Hanumān, the one worshipped by all the divine and the demon groups. (28)

एवं ध्यायन्नरो नित्यं सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
प्रयाणे चिंतितस्सिद्धिः शीघ्रमेव न संशयः।। 29

All the sins (pāpās) of a person meditating in this manner will be removed. Reciting this hymn (stōtra) during travel readily gives all the desired wishes. There is no doubt about this. (29)

अष्टम्यां तु चतुर्दश्यामर्कवारे विशेषतः
संध्यापूजां प्रकुर्वीत द्वादश्यां तु विशेषतः।। 30

Worship Procedure

Worship is best done in the evenings on the eighth tithi (day) (aşţami) or the fourteenth tithi day (caturdaśi), especially on Sundays or on twelfth (dwādaśi) day. (30)

अर्कमूलेन कुर्वीत हनुमत्प्रतिमां सुधीः
पूजयेत्तत्र विद्वांसो रक्तवस्त्रेण वेष्टयेत्।। 31

A wise person prepares the idol of Hanumān using the root of swallowwort root (arkamoola). It has to be wrap around in a red cloth and worshipped. (31)

ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेत्पश्चात् तत्प्रीत्यै सर्वपर्वसु
यः करोति दृडभक्त्या पूजां हनुमतो नरः।। 32

Afterwards a feast has to be organized for the Brāhmin people for pleasing Hanumān on a festive day. Whoever performs Hanumān worship with pure devotion, (32)

न शस्त्रभयमाप्नोति भयं वाप्यंतरिक्षजम्।। 33

Such ones will never be frightened by any weapon, nor will dangers connected with the cosmos affect them unknowingly. (33)

अक्षादिराक्षसहरं दशकंठदर्प…
निर्मूलनंम् रघुवरांघ्रिसरोजभक्तं
सीताविषयघनदुःखमहांधकार…
निर्वापणे शिशिरभानुमहं नमामि।। 34

Fervent Prayer

I bow reverentially to Lord Hanumān, the destroyer of Akşa and other demons, the one that dented Rāvaņa’s pride, the devotee at the lotus feet of Lord Śreerāmacandra, the one that is like the bright sun in the deep winter season, the one that saved Mother Jānaki from the great ocean of sorrow. (34)

मां पश्य पश्य दयया निजदृष्टिपातैः
मां रक्ष रक्ष परितो रिपुदुःखपुंजात्
वश्यं कुरु त्रिजगतां मनुजेष्वराणाम्
मे देहि देहि महतीं वसुधां श्रियं च।। 35

Oh! Hanumān! Kindly keep your benevolent eye on me. Protect me from the groups of enemies surrounding me. Grant me control over the kings of all the Three Worlds. Kindly grant me good land and riches. (35)

आपद्भ्यो रक्ष सर्वत्र आंजनेय नमो स्तु ते
बंधनं छेदयाशु त्वं कपिवर्य नमो स्तु ते।। 36

Oh! Hanumān! Protect me from dangers everywhere. I bow to Thee. Free me from all worldly restraints quickly. Oh! Best of monkeys! I bow to Thee. (36)

उच्चाटय रिपून्सर्वान् मोहनं भूभुजां कुरु
विद्वेषिणो मारय त्वं त्रिमूत्र्यात्मक सर्वदा।। 37

Oh! The Form of the Trinity of Lords! See that all the enemies are always under my control. Destroy all my haters. (37)

देहि मे संपदं नित्यं त्रिलोचन नमो स्तु ते
दुष्टरोगान् जहि जहि रामदूत नमो स्तु ते।। 38

Oh! The Three –Eyed One! I bow to Thee. Always grant me wealth. Oh! Ambassador of Lord Rāma! I bow to Thee. Save me from all maladies.(38)

संजीवपर्वतोद्धार मम दुःखं निवारय
ज्वरानुपद्रवान् त्सर्वान् नाशय त्वं सुरांतक।। 39

Oh! The one that lifted the Sanjeevi Mountain (full of medicinal herbs)! Remove my sorrow. Oh! Destroyer of demons! Remove all fevers and catastrophes. (39)

एवं स्तुत्वा हनूमंतं नरः श्रद्धासमन्वितः
पुत्रपौत्रादिसहितः सर्वसौख्यमवाप्नुयात्।। 40

On praising Hanumān in this manner with attention, one will get all happiness and pleasures with sons and grandsons. (40)

हाहाकारमुखांतनिर्यदनलज्वालासमूहोज्ज्वलम्
विद्युत्खंडसुजातधूम्रवपुषं स्वच्छाट्टहासं विभुम्
संचूर्णीकृष्तधूम्रलोचनमुखादिक्षीणरक्षोबलम्
तं वंद्यात्सुरचारणासुरवरैर्वंद्यं समीरात्मजम्।। 41

I bow to Hanumān, the son of the Wind God, the one that shines from whose mouth flames spout out due to wild growling, one that has a strange smoke coloured (dhoomravarņa) body that is born out of a lightening (vidyutkhanda), one that can make great sounding deep roar like shrieks (attahāsa), the one that reduced into ash countless demons like Dhoomralōcana by just looking at them and the one worshipped by deities, demons and wandering spirits. (41)

रघुपतिपदभक्तं किंचिदुत्तुंगमंगम्
मुकुलितकरपद्मं मोदमानांतरंगं
पुलकितविपुलांगं पुण्यलीलानुषंगम्
वनचरकुलनाथं वायुपुत्रं नमामि।। 42

I bow to Hanumān, the son of the Wind God, the worshipper of the lotus feet of Lord Śreerāma, the very tall one, one who keeps his hands folded together in obedience, the one with a satisfied heart, one with mightily enraptured (pulakita) body, the one full of good deeds and the leader of the monkey warriors. (42)

यत्र यत्र रघुनाथकीर्तनं तत्र तत्र कृतमस्तकांजलिम्
बाष्पवारिपरिपूर्णलोचनं मारुतिं नमत राक्षसांतकम्।। 43

I bow to Hanumān, the destroyer of demons, the one who stands with folded hands, bowed head and eyes filled with tears of happiness, wherever people worship Lord Śreerāma. (43)

दिव्यौषधिप्रदानेन कपिकोटिं ररक्ष यः
हनूमंतं जपत्वं तं नमस्ते स्तु महात्मने।। 44

I bow to Hanumān, who brought back to life all the demons by giving the wonder medicinal herb, such a great soul, who keeps on reciting the Lord’s name. (44)

बुद्धिर्बलं यशो धैर्यनिर्भयत्वमरोगता
अजाड्यं वाक्पटुत्वं च हनुमत्स्मरणाद्भवेत्।। 45

Hanumān, who, by just remembering Him, gives to all – wisdom, strength, fame, courage, fearlessness, freedom from diseases, freedom from all psychological maladies and good speech. (45)

वज्रांगं पिंगकेशाढ्यं स्वर्णकुंडलमंडितम्
प्रयुध्यमानं संग्रामे पारावारपराक्रमम्।। 46

I bow to Hanumān, the one that has diamond hard body, has abundance of golden hued hair, one who shines with golden ear hangings, who fights well in wars, and one with a sea full of valor. (46)

यंत्रोद्धारं प्रवक्ष्यामि धारणं यत्समानतः।
भूर्जे ताम्रे तथा पट्टे भित्तौ वस्त्रे शिलातले
पद्मपत्रे थवा लेख्यं रोचनाभागकेसरैः।। 47

Making Amilet, the Yantra

I am telling about the method of making an amulet yantra. Draw with bezoars (calculi =gorōcana) and saffron (rōcanabhāgakēśaraih) nicely on a birch leaf (bark), a sheet of copper, a strong band of a rind (patta), on a wall, on a cloth, on a rock surface or on a leaf of lotus. (47)

वृत्तत्रयं पुरा लेख्यं वलयेन सुपुच्छवत्
साध्यनाम लिखेन्मध्ये बहिरष्टदलं लिखेत्।। 48

First, three circles are to be drawn with tails. Having written the name of the goddess of dharma (Sādhya) in the center, draw eight leaves/petal outside. (48)

पव्म्चाक्षरैस्साध्यनाम वेष्टयेन्निबिडं दृढम्
दलेष्वष्टसु संलेख्यं हुंकारं षण्मुखं तथा।। 49

The name of the Sādhya has to be written nicely and clearly. Having written the letter ‘hum’ in the eight petals, draw hexagons (şaţkōņa). (49)

बहिस्संवेष्टयेत्तत्र वलयेन दृढं तथा
तद्बहिष्चतुरस्त्रं स्यात्कोणागे्रैश्च सुविस्मितैः।। 50

Draw circles strongly outside the hexagons. Outside these, squares have to be drawn with protracted edges of angles. (50)

तल्लेखासु त्रिशूलानि लेखयेत् शोभनानि च
मूलमन्त्रेण तत्सर्वं वेष्टयेन्मन्डलं क्रमैः।। 51

Nicely draw the form of tridents (triśoolas) along the edges. Draw in the order of a block (mandala) the base (root) mantra in a nice manner. (51)

पुनर्बहिस्तदेवापि त्रिरेखाभिश्च वेष्टयेत्
रेखांते च त्रिवलयं कारयेदेककोणकम्।। 52

Again draw around it triple circles, i.e., three lined. Draw at the end of this line an angle with three rings. (52)

तन्मध्येष्वंकुशं लेख्यं ह्रसौं बीजं समालिखेत्।
वज्राष्टकेन संयोज्यं मूलमन्त्रं तथाष्टधा।। 53

Having drawn in the center of it an elephant goad (ankuśa) and the root letter ‘hsoum’ has to be written, the root mantrahas to be linked with the vajraāşţakam (the diamond-strong hymn with eight poems).  (53)

मर्कटेशं च तद्यंत्रे प्राणाह्नानं च कारयेत्
षट्छतैस्त्रिशतैर्वापि तद्यंत्रमभिमंत्रयेत्।। 54

Perform the life-impartation (prāņapratişţa) of the Lord of Monkey Warriors, Hanumān in that amulet (yantra). This yantra has to be consecrated via recitation of the mantra 600 or 300 times. (54)

मर्कटेश्वरसंयोगप्राप्ति बुद्ध्या च कारयेत्।। 55

Believing that the Lord of the Monkey Warriors resides in it, the yantra has to be worshipped. (55)

निष्कल्मषब्रह्मचर्यव्रतधारी जितेन्द्रियः
व्यक्ताननो महाभागो हनुमन्तं च पूजयेत्।। 56

The Worship

Hanumān, the flawless one, the one that always remains dedicated to celibacy (brahmacaryavratadeekşā), the one that has control over His senses, the one with a beautiful face and the great soul (mahātma) has to be worshipped. (56)

कदलीमातुलंगादिफलैः खाद्यैर्मनोहरैः
पुष्पैर्नानाविधैश्चैव ह्युपचारैस्समाहितः।। 57

Worship the Lord by offering banana, berries and other tasty and attractive fruits and all types of materials that are offered in rituals. (57)

ततो यन्त्रं सुधार्यं स्यात् सर्वबाधाविनाशकृत
सर्वरक्षाकरं नृणां बालानां योषितामपि
पशूनां च हयानां च मृगाणां सर्वजीविनाम्।। 58

Only then, that yantra becomes worthy of wearing and removes all difficulties (to the wearer). It protects people in all manners. Especially women and children get all manners of protection. It is a worthy all-purpose protective amulet worthy of wearing to the cattle, horses, deers, in fact, to all the creatures. (58)

ज्वरादिकं स्फोटकादिचोररोगभयापहम्।। 59

It removes away fevers and eruptions and pustules of pox (spōţaka) and other diseases, drives thieves, maladies and all types of fears. (59)

राजद्वारे वने घोरे संग्रामे रिपुसंकटे
शस्त्रपाते महाभीतौ दिव्याग्निजलसंप्लवे
जनवश्ये राजवश्ये रिपुवश्ये द्विषद्वधे।। 60

It is protective at the gates of a king’s court, in dense forests, in a fierce war with enemies, during attacks by weapons, when there is great fear, inevitable unforeseen (from other world) accidents, in danger from fire, while there are great floods, in fact, in all situations. (It is useful) in captivating people, controlling kings, making enemies come under incluesnce and destroying them. (60)

दधतामनिशं यन्त्रं प्राणस्थापनपूर्वकम्
सर्वकार्यसुसिद्धिस्स्या न्नात्र कार्या विचारणा। 61

A person wearing it after ritualistic life-impartation (prāņapratişţa) always gets what he intends to do (sarvakāmyssiddhi). There is no doubt in this. (61)

इति श्रीपराशरसंहितायां श्रीपराशरमैत्रेयसंवादे स्तोत्र…प्रकारकथनं नाम द्विसप्ततितमःपटलः
