70th Chapter (Saptatima Paţalah)

“The Story of Hanumān’s Nature”

(Hanumttatvakathanam)

What is Hanuman

“The one who has very many names, the one who is taking the forms of matsya (great fish), korma (great tortoise) and other many incarnations, (1)

The one who is always protecting this world with great and balanced mind, the one that carries out different acts just to protect the devotees, (2)

The one that is accepting all the various forms of devotees, that is suitable to them, the one that is making all the worlds holy by virtue of his wonderful history, (3)

In whose name the axioms of the upanişads are becoming the testaments! The one that has taken in this Creation, the form of Brahma, the creator and is creating all the  live beings, (4)

The one, who is sustaining all the created creatures with aplomb, the one that is submerging all such created beings in sadness due to death and other happenings, (5)

Such a great personality who is the very life of all creatures, the form of purity; is to be known as Lord Hanumān. (6)

Oh! Sage Mytrēya! Know that Hanumān as the guru of this universe (Jagadguru). Know that very Hanumān to be the consumer (bhokta) of the offerings in all the sacred rituals (sarvakratu). (7)

Knowing that Hanumān is the provider of achievement (siddhipradāta) of all the sacred rituals, also know that Hanumān Himself is the offering in all the sacred rituals. (8)

The form ascertained in all the sounds is again Hanumān and the one resplendent with all the auspicious features is again Hanumān. Like a string bearing all the precious stones in a necklace, Hanumān bears all the creatures always. (9)

Like the same gold taking the form of a bracelet as well as of ear rings, bearing the one grand great form (viśvaroopa), the same Hanumān is seen different forms. Because of desire-induced ignorance (anādyavidyā) or illusion forming the form-name (roopanāmam), both appear in same thing. (10)

This whole world of mobile living beings and immobile things is Hanumadātmaka (with the soul of Hanumān). Those that think so, will definitely obtain achievement of freedom from this mundane world. (11)

Fools are those that cannot imagine so. May they ultimately say, freely, all by themselves, that this whole Universe is full of Hanumān. (12)

The Evidence

I will tell this ancient historical episode as evidence of this. You will obtain bliss on just by hearing this. (13)

Once, earlier, the auspicious Dēvēndra decided to destroy the demon Vŗtrāsura; but forgot himself due to enchantment induced then by the demon’s illusions. (14)

His great diamond-hard weapon (vajrayudha) fell out, as he was stunned. Then the highly intelligent guru of Gods came, (15)

And imparted this Hanumatstotra (Hanumān invocatory hymn) to him. Dēvēdra, now possessing the king of stotras, (16)

As though awaking from sleep, came out of the swoon. Then he (Dēvēndra) recited the Hanumān laudatory hymn imparted by his guru.(17)

Indra recited the Mantra so  –

I reverentially bow to the Lord (Paramēśwara) of the entire universe, the wealth that has to be worshipped by the entire universe, the changeless instrument of Creation – Maintenance – Dissolution (sŗşţi, sthiti and laya). (18)

I bow to the very Form of truth, consciousness and bliss (satchidānanda) and born to Mother Pārvatee. In whose womb this earth and others (bhoorbhuvādayah) stay, (19)

And always stay blissful, such a universal teacher (jagadguru) Hanumān I bow to. By whose benevolence man conquers death even while being a mortal (20)

To such an Auspicious Hanumān, free of birth and death, I bow to reverentially. (21)

I bow to lord Hanumān, the form of both Nara (perfect man like Arjuna) and Narāyaņa (Vişņu), I bow to the one born to Ańjana, the one responsible for killing of demons, the one that strolls on the banks of lake Pampa and the son of the Wind God. (22)

I bow to Hanumān, the lord of monkey warriors, the one that fulfils all wishes, the one born to lord Śiva that destroyed the demon Tripurāsura, the one that sustains the unfortunate ones, the one with a wide chest, the one with a pure heart and the one that is a terror to sinners. (23)

I bow to the son of the Wind God, the one with fire like glow, one that cracks the shackles of this mundane world, the one that in accepted as leader by the monkey warriors and the one whose fresh speech encourages creation of poetry. (24)

I bow to the grand fame (son) of mother Ańjana that always stands with folded hands in front of His great Lord Śrīrāma and entertains Him with his enchanting vocabulary. (25)

I bow to the son of the Wind God with a beautiful face, the one with the brilliance of the Son, the one that keeps worlds happy just like Lord Śiva, the one with a heart-warming (manōgńya) form similar to that of Mount Mandara and the one that is very reverential. (26)

I bow to the son of Ańjana, that wears golden ear rings, the one with beautiful body parts, the one that destroys the demons, the one that is the very form of virtuousness and the one that brought auspiciousness to Sītā, the daughter of king Janaka (hence, Jānaki). (27)

I bow to the one with immeasurable courage, I bow to Hanumān, the one with a name that is pleasant to hear, the one that likes invocatory hymns, the one with boundless courage, the one that is intent on rescuing those that seek relief from distress (ārtatrņaparāyaņa), the one that does good to the world, dear son of Keśari, best amongst the virtuous people and our protector. (28)

I take refuse in the that valorous one that is most venerated (paramapāvana), the son of Pārvatee, the one with incomparable courage, the one that won over his organs (indiyanigraha; control over senses), the one that has sharp nails as weapons, the one that can attain any form he desires and the one that is praised by Devendra. (29)

The one that strolls in the golden banana grove at the top of Mount Gandhamādana, the one that is kind towards all creatures; protect me, the helpless. (30)

Oh! Hanumān! Why are you neglecting me, the helpless that always gets confused in the darkness of the cave that is this mundane world? (31)

Oh! Hanumān! I bow to you, the one that is holding a sweet banana in the hand, holding a majestic golden crowbar and the destroyer of the demon Karkati. (32)

Oh! The one having camel as the vehicle! Best amongst monkeys! Oh! Lord of the universe! Lift me, the asylum seeker at your feet, from the ocean of sadness that is this mundane world. (33)

One thinking as bliss, the union of the male and female sex organs that are afflicted by semen, urine, faeces, blood, pus and other thing as definitely a fool! (34)

See Hanumān! Instead of serving you, the foolish people are wasting their time in filling their belly and seeking sex. (35)

Oh! Friend of the all the worlds! Scion of the clan of monkeys! Not even a blade of grass moves without your command. The one knowing this truth that the whole universe is under your command will never have sadness. (36)

Reverential bow to the sun of the Wind God. Reverential bow to the one with auspicious history and the one that is the very form of the universe. Reverential bow to the one with a diamond hard body, the destroyer of demons, to the ocean of kindness, to the one having five faces, to the one wearing nice ear rings, to the king of monkeys and to the spouse of Suvarcchala. Reverential bow to Lord Hanumān, the one capable of attaining the desired form. (37)

Blessed are the words of poets that sing praises of Hanumān. Blessed is the one in this world that is an expert in worshipping Hanumān. Blessed is the embankment of the Lake Pampa that is in constant contact with Hanumān’s lotus feet. Blessed is the clan of monkeys of this world due to the incarnation of Hanumān.’ (38)

So praising Hanumān, Dēvēndra the thousand-eyed husband of Satee, as though woke up from deep slumber, attained great courage. (39)

Dēvendraē picked up his Diamond weapon again and threw it on the demon Vŗtrāsura. So hit by the Diamond weapon, that Vŗtrāsura fell down and died. (40)
